"Um."
Song Lingxi nodded, letting out a soft "hmm," and watched Xie Changling put on his clothes, fasten his belt, and turn to leave.
...
Lanterns were already lit outside, and the maids were busy with their duties, some boiling water and others rushing to the kitchen to urge the preparation of dishes.
They were all very honest, and Huixin had already warned them that this kind of thing couldn't be publicized, otherwise it would damage the master's reputation.
Qingxin couldn't stand it anymore. Huixin always looked down on her and was now ordering others around. She looked at Huixin, who was busy running around, and said sarcastically.
"The master hasn't even given any orders, yet you, as a maid, are already worrying about it for him. What, are you trying to overstep your bounds?"
Huixin didn't want to pay attention to this kind of person, but she was afraid that she would go around talking nonsense, so she suppressed her displeasure and reminded her.
"Watch your mouth and don't say anything carelessly. If you say something you shouldn't and the masters hear it, you'll be in big trouble."
Qingxin, however, thought this person was just trying to scare her. She rolled her eyes so hard they almost reached the sky, and said disdainfully, "Ha, anyone can talk big. If you're so capable, then—"
"Who's making such a racket at the door!"
A pleasant male voice rang out, but the tone was unusually stern, sounding as if he wanted to devour someone, which was quite terrifying.
"This servant has just met the young master."
Upon hearing this, everyone knelt down to pay their respects, even the little maid carrying the things knelt down respectfully.
Xie Changling didn't let them get up, but instead looked at the person in the lead, who was wearing a green jacket and a pink flower in his hair, and was indeed quite handsome.
"What's your name? Was I calling you to help the lady with her hair and makeup at noon?"
Xie Changling vaguely felt that she looked somewhat familiar, so he began to ask in a deep voice. His gaze was sharp and his voice was very serious, without any hint of softening.
Qingxin couldn't read the young master's expression, but she was secretly delighted, thinking that he remembered her and probably had his eye on her for a long time.
Qingxin was feeling smug when she boldly looked Xie Changling straight in the eye: "My name is Qingxin. I was fortunate enough to be summoned to the young master and madam at noon, but I don't know why I was driven away."
"Young master, you haven't believed Huixin's rumors, have you? She's just taking advantage of being the young mistress's head maid, being senior, bullying the younger ones, and even being jealous of me."
Qingxin spoke with such conviction, as if it were a true story, that Huixin looked at her in surprise. Then, realizing what she had said, Huixin's face was filled with anger and indignation.
Huixin wanted to retort immediately, but considering that the young master was still there, and that there was no order without rules, she could only wait until he finished speaking before she could refute him.
Upon hearing this, Xie Changling narrowed his eyes, a cold smile playing on his lips. He was no longer the gentle man he had been in front of Song Lingxi; instead, he exuded a gloomy aura.
"Oh?" The sound came from his throat, making it impossible to discern any emotion in it.
Qingxin, however, was smug and thought that Xie Changling had overheard what she said, so she became even more arrogant.
"Yes, young master, you don't know, just now Huixin was trying to instruct the young mistress's dowry, but I stopped her."
"By doing this, she is showing no respect for you and the young mistress, overstepping her bounds. She should be sold off by the servant boy."
Qingxin, being a maid herself, how could she not understand how horrible the servants were? Yet she insisted on saying it, and not only that, she was tattling on Huixin and trying to harm her.
"you!"
Huixin couldn't stand it this time. She wanted to beat the person to death. How could there be such a bad person? She had kindly reminded him, but all she got in return was Qingxin's revenge.
She felt a raging fire burning in her chest, and if she didn't release it, she would get sick. She looked up at Xie Changling and kowtowed hard.
"Young master, this servant has something to say."
"explain."
“Young master, everything Qingxin said is untrue, it’s all nonsense, and she’s trying to frame me.”
"She herself is dishonest and has developed the idea of climbing the social ladder by attaching herself to you. But I can see clearly that you and the young mistress are a match made in heaven. How can we allow such a villain to ruin it?"
"I gave her a few warnings, but to my surprise, she didn't listen to a word of my good intentions and instead became resentful."
The more Huixin spoke, the more wronged she felt, and she couldn't hold back her tears any longer, though she kept talking.
"Not only that, she couldn't stand that the servants, who were of the same rank as her, could order other maids around while the others didn't listen to her. She was furious, so she framed the servants like this."
"Heaven and earth can bear witness that I did indeed instruct the other maids, but I did my duty without shirking it in the slightest."
Huixin's eyes were swollen from crying, and she did look quite pitiful. Her gaze startled Qingxin.
Qingxin was so frightened that she couldn't speak for a moment, and she lost her balance and fell to the ground.
