Although Gu and Shi reconciled on the surface, the underlying animosity between them did not diminish.
In the past, even when the two factions were separate, there were still many conflicts. Now that they are under the same person, it is even more impossible for them to become close.
The two were merely putting on a show, a fact Zeng Guangzhao was well aware of.
So as soon as he recovered from his injury, he learned from Yi Mu that Shi Fang was hosting a banquet at Lai Fu Restaurant, and he went there to stake out the place early in the morning.
The banquet was hosted by a high-ranking official from the central government, who was said to be a close confidant of the Chairman.
His ambitions were far greater than those of a mere division commander; he believed that only by getting close to the top leader in the central government could he find opportunities to make money.
Zeng Guangzhao ordered a plate of peanuts and braised beef.
His private room was right next to the venue, and with his ears perked up, he could hear the conversation clearly.
They were there to deliver a message to the army, but Shi Fang insisted on talking nonsense and asking what officials in the central government usually did.
That person shouldn't be stupid, but perhaps he received enough benefits, as he gradually revealed confidential information.
Zeng Guangzhao only spent the money for some peanuts and braised beef to hear so many inside secrets for free, and he was so happy that the corners of his mouth were turned up in a big smile.
As the conversation on the other end drew to a close, Zeng Guangzhao wiped his hands, walked out of the private room, lowered his head, and lit a cigarette.
Shi Fang didn't personally come out to see people off, probably because he was afraid of too many people gossiping.
Zeng Guangzhao waited for the man and his men to leave before pushing open the door and entering the next private room.
He turned his back, closed the door, and walked behind the screen.
Just as Shi Fang was about to stand up, he saw him.
Zeng Guangzhao plopped down opposite him without any politeness, grinning as he bit down on his cigarette, revealing a set of bright white teeth.
"Commander Shi, it's been a long time. How are you doing?"
Shi Fang was a scholar who became a warlord halfway through his life.
They were no match for Gu Cheng, that big, burly brute, and even less so for Zeng Guangzhao.
Upon seeing Zeng Guangzhao, Shi Fang couldn't help but think of his collusion with Gu Cheng.
There were only the two of them in the room. Even though Zeng Guangzhao was smiling, Shi Fang was afraid that he would do something reckless.
I heard that of the thousands of men he led to the battlefield, only a few dozen survived.
He didn't believe Zeng Guangzhao hadn't figured out the intricacies behind this war.
After all, he recruited Zeng Guangzhao because he valued his courage and resourcefulness.
Gu Cheng searched for Zeng Guangzhao for two months, but still couldn't find him.
Where has he been hiding all this time?
Now that Zeng Guangzhao has appeared in front of him, what does he want to do?
Despite his many thoughts, Shi Fang remained calm and composed.
How did you know I was here?
Zeng Guangzhao is very tactful.
"After resting for two months, my mouth was so bland that I came out to have a good meal, and I heard Commander Shi next door."
He smiled, then changed the subject, "If I'm not mistaken, that person is Chiang Kai-shek's secretary-general?"
Shi Fang's expression gradually turned serious, regardless of what Zeng Guangzhao wanted to see him about.
Zeng Guangzhao discovered that he had dinner with the secretary-general in private, and probably overheard a lot of their conversation.
He doesn't know what mischief this kid is up to; he'd better be careful.
We're all smart people, so let's not beat around the bush.
“What do you want from me? Tell me.”
Zeng Guangzhao liked straightforward people. He stared intently at Zeng Guangzhao, his eyes deliberately feigning an ambition to make a comeback.
"I heard that the commander has an army stationed outside the city, and his subordinates can't spare any more people to manage it. I'm volunteering to give it a try."
His gaze was icy, and he asked, enunciating each word clearly, "Where did you get this information?"
Apart from a few of his close confidants, no one knew about this.
Zeng Guangzhao's expression was inscrutable. "You don't need to know that. Just tell me, is it okay or not?"
