Bai Xiaolin gasped, stunned by Xia Linyin's audacious idea.
After a long pause, he swallowed hard, his words slurred, "Open...open the coffin?"
“Yes, open the coffin, open Chad’s coffin.” Xia Linyin put the letter back into the envelope, put it in her pocket, took the candlestick from Bai Xiaolin, and the two of them quietly left the study. “Let’s go.”
Before closing the door, Xia Linyin whispered to the spirit inside, "Thank you."
After going downstairs, the two, who were starving, found a few cans of food in the kitchen. The cans were expired, but they didn't care. They pried open the cans and wolfed them down, drinking every last drop of the juice.
Bai Xiaolin licked his fingers and said regretfully, "It's a pity there's no water."
The faucet was rusty and covered in cobwebs. Even when I tried to turn it on, no water came out; instead, I ended up unscrewing the faucet.
Xia Linyin wiped her mouth. "We'll take turns keeping watch and get some sleep. When we think it's about time, we'll go to the cemetery."
Both of them were now extremely exhausted, not only physically but also mentally. Since being chased, their nerves had been on edge, and they dared not relax. Even now, they dared not completely let their guard down, constantly paying attention to any movement outside.
Digging graves requires physical strength, and they certainly can't do it without taking a break to conserve their energy.
Seeing that Xia Linyin's eyelids were drooping and her beautiful face showed signs of exhaustion, Bai Xiaolin said, "You go to sleep first, I'll wake you up when I'm sleepy."
Xia Linyin nodded, walked towards the sofa, lifted the sofa cover to shake off the dust, covered herself with the sofa cover, snuggled up on the sofa, closed her eyes, and soon began to snore softly.
In the middle of the night, the two people inside tiptoed out of the house, holding the shovel they had found inside. A cold night wind swept in, dispelling Xia Linyin and Bai Xiaolin's remaining drowsiness, and the two who had been yawning instantly became much more awake.
The town wasn't very big. Xia Linyin had run almost all over the town today while being chased by the chainsaw maniac, and she almost ran into the town's cemetery. Her memory and sense of direction were still pretty good, so the two of them didn't spend too much time making their way to the cemetery in the dark.
The moonlight, like clear tears, spilled onto the tombstones in the cemetery, emanating a chilling cold that made people shiver. It was not just a cold that penetrated the skin, but a cold that penetrated the soul, a cold born of fear.
Bai Xiaolin's legs trembled uncontrollably. He felt a chilling wind blowing around him, and ghostly figures loomed overhead. The tombstones, in particular, were eerie and terrifying, making him fear that a rotting, withered hand might emerge from the earth at any moment and grab his feet.
He clung tightly to Xia Linyin, not daring to leave her side. Even when Xia Linyin approached the tombstones and looked at the words on them one by one, no matter how scared he was, he followed her every step of the way.
In the dim moonlight, Xia Linyin carefully examined the information carved on the tombstone, running her fingers over it to make out the details. It would be a lie to say she wasn't afraid; her heart was already racing, and her back was covered in a layer of cold sweat. But more than fear and dread, she wanted to live.
Finally, she found Chad's name. "Found it, dig it up."
The cold marble tombstone was engraved with an epitaph and Chad's name. Xia Linyin walked behind the tombstone and stuck a shovel into the soil. Bai Xiaolin also hurried over to dig the soil with Xia Linyin.
Neither of them spoke, they just buried themselves in their work, digging out soil shovel after shovel. With a muffled thud, Bai Xiaolin's shovel hit something, and his heart skipped a beat. He looked up at Xia Linyin, who nodded at him.
After a few shovelfuls, the dark coffin was revealed. After digging for a while longer, the two men stood beside the coffin lid and used their shovels to pry it loose. They looked at each other and then slowly pushed the coffin lid open together.
"really……"
The coffin was empty. Looking at the empty coffin, Xia Linyin's eyes were deep and unfathomable. "Do you know what this means?"
"That means your guess is correct. Chad is the murderer. He successfully faked his death to deceive the townspeople. But I still can't understand why our weapons are useless against Chad. Unless Chad is a demon, a real demon, and our weapons are too low-level to deal with him."
Xia Linyin shook her head. "Five players, three of whom have weapons and items, that's already quite strong, especially Brother Wu's weapon. You can tell how powerful it is just by looking at Brother Wu's reaction. But right now, our weapons are completely useless against that chainsaw maniac chasing us."
Xia Linyin climbed out of the grave, pushing the soil back in, and said, "My thoughts remain the same. If the ogres really are monsters, then our game has no chance of survival. Now that it's been confirmed that Chad is an ogre, he likely has accomplices. He needs someone to dig him up from the grave in the middle of the night, and—"
Xia Linyin licked her lips, her voice hoarse from the dryness in her throat.
"I paused when I was reading the letter because I remembered that the chainsaw maniac we encountered was tall and could run with a chainsaw without any effort. The letter said that Chad was struggling to drag the drunk Jerry, so they must not be the same person. The cannibal in this game has an accomplice, and that accomplice is the chainsaw maniac."
"The game lets us kill cannibals, but now our weapons are completely useless against the chainsaw maniac, and so far the chainsaw maniac hasn't actually killed us."
"Maybe this chainsaw maniac is just a decoy, not our target. If that's the case, our mission can still be completed. As long as we find out that Chad is the real cannibal, we'll have a chance to find Chad and complete our mission."
“You mean…” Bai Xiaolin scratched the back of his head, “The game’s premise is that the real killer, the cannibal Chad, is actually just an ordinary person, but he has a very powerful accomplice, Chainsaw Maniac, who protects him. Chad, who pretends to be dead, hides in the shadows, while Chainsaw Maniac is in the open, misleading the players into thinking that he is a cannibal.”
Bai Xiaolin clapped his hands, his eyes gleaming with a shrewd light. "The key to survival in this round of the game lies in the real cannibal, Chad. All we need to do is find Chad."
"Finally, another reason why I don't think the Chainsaw Maniac is Chad is—" Xia Linyin stroked the number on the tombstone, "The tombstone shows that Chad died at the age of fifty. So five years have passed, and he should be fifty-five years old now. Do you think the Chainsaw Maniac we met looks like he's fifty-five years old?"
