The two couldn't tell the truth for a moment, and could only mumble: "Miss..."
As if he had thought of something, fear appeared on Mo Qin's face.
"Every palace in the harem is home to ferocious birds and beasts. I don't even have a palace of my own. If you are not afraid of death, you must come with me into the palace..."
Upon hearing this, the two maids turned pale with fright, obviously having heard the related rumors.
Someone urged, "Empress, the palace gates are about to be locked."
Mo Qin hurriedly lowered the curtain and stopped looking at the two people. The carriage started moving again and slowly drove into the palace gate in the afterglow of the setting sun.
-
The eunuch entered the room and lit a candle. The warm light blended with the dim setting sun, and it was getting dark.
Jun Ye finished reviewing a memorial with his pen, looked out the window, and asked the eunuch:
"The Queen hasn't returned yet?"
The cold tone made the eunuch's hands tremble, and he didn't dare to breathe.
"Your Majesty, the Empress has not returned to the palace yet. She must be on her way."
Since ancient times, has it ever been possible for concubines in the harem to leave the palace at will? This is truly a first.
"Have you changed the keys to the palace gates?"
"The key was given away a quarter of an hour ago."
Jun Ye didn't ask any more questions, but just said calmly: "Go down."
The eunuch felt as if he had been pardoned and quickly retreated, praying in his heart that the queen would return soon.
When Mo Qin returned to the palace, the sun had already set, and the palace people waiting outside breathed a sigh of relief.
Just as he sat down, Jun Ye came back from the imperial study. There was no anger on his face, but his tone was as cold as an ice blade.
"You still remember to come back?"
She ran out early in the morning and didn't come back until dark at night. If he hadn't said so beforehand, he would probably have sent someone to invite her back.
He was angry when Mo Qinpin came out, "Of course I will come back, how can I get lost?"
Jun Ye is weird:
"It won't be lost, but I'm afraid some people won't want to come back."
Then he asked her, "Is it time to eat?"
Mo Qin suppressed her laughter and raised her hand to hug him, "You haven't eaten yet, are you waiting for me?"
Speaking of this, Jun Ye narrowed his eyes and pushed Mo Qin away with disgust.
"Heh, I'm so dirty after running around outside all day, don't hug me."
He said he was disgusted, but only he knew what he was thinking in his heart.
It was also because Mo Qin had been so well behaved in recent days that he was able to wait patiently until now.
Perhaps because she knew she was late, or perhaps because she felt guilty for having said something bad about him, Mo Qin coaxed her:
"Okay, okay, I'll go shower and change first."
After Mo Qin went to take a shower and change clothes, Jun Ye also learned everything that happened today from his subordinates.
When Mo Qin came out, she saw Jun Ye leaning on the couch, holding a book in his hand, not knowing what he was reading.
The palace maids outside began to serve the meal. Jun Ye did not eat lunch. He really did not expect Mo Qin to come back on time. He didn't know whether she had forgotten because of playing or she just didn't want to stay in the palace for a moment longer.
When the meal was almost over, Jun Ye started to count the bills again. He slowly repeated what Mo Qin had said before:
"I admit I have a bad temper, but at the very least, threats and beatings, and at the worst, beatings and executions?"
"You don't even have your own palace?"
He supported his head with one hand and stared at Mo Qin, not knowing whether he wanted to clear his name or for something else.
"I don't even know when I threatened, beat, or scolded you, or when I ever thought of beheading you."
Mo Qin just took a sip of soup and choked.
“Ahem!”
Jun Ye raised his hand very gently to help her calm down, but he kept pestering her.
"Have I treated you harshly? Have I left you with no place to live?"
Mo Qin said seriously:
"You asked me to take you to see 'Da Huang' that day. Weren't you trying to scare me?"
"Well, what else?" Jun Ye listened quietly but did not argue for himself.
He really did it.
Mo Qin has a more elaborate story later on, and she didn't make it up.
"I'm living in your house now, living under someone else's roof. It's like I don't have my own palace!"
Well, now I have to live under someone else's roof.
Jun Ye didn't know whether to laugh or cry, "From now on, this palace will be yours. I'll live with you and I'll be living under someone else's roof. Is that okay?"
Mo Qin looked away and said gloomily, "I'm just borrowing your reputation to scare these two troublemakers."
When Jun Ye heard this for the first time, he was stunned for a moment.
He knew the purpose of Mo Qin's words, but he couldn't help but wonder whether she really saw him that way.
She had no control over her situation and nothing happened as she wished.
No one knew that he had been on pins and needles the entire afternoon, fearing that she would really not come back. No one knew that when he heard those words, his heart ached as if it were being tightly grasped by a pair of hands.
Countless threats and intimidation came to his mind, and only one sentence remained:
"Well, don't come back so late next time."
-
Liang Yubing found out about this the next day.
There were yamen runners guarding the gate of the courtyard, and someone was rummaging through things inside.
Seeing that the situation was not right, Liang Yubing did not go forward directly, but asked a passerby.
Originally there were not many people here, but yesterday afternoon a lot of soldiers suddenly came here, and more people came to watch the fun.
From time to time, people in Western clothes passed by on the wide dirt ground, and many people just stood there, craning their necks to look inside.
The lady who was asked was an enthusiastic person, and she started talking with a clatter of her lips.
"This is terrible! The old man in the hospital is a murderer!"
"There are so many bodies in the cellar! The government even rescued quite a few people from there yesterday!"
