As night fell, Cen Yu felt the burning sensation on her back become even more pronounced.
He knew this wasn't a good sign, but he didn't want to tell He Xueqing. He knew she would make a big fuss and might say something like, "If only I were the one who got hurt."
They sat back to back on their sleeping bags. Perhaps because no one usually came here, no monsters appeared even at night.
The power had been cut off in the exhibition hall long ago, and they sat on their sleeping bags in the windowless room.
Cen Yu's phone had long since run out of battery, and only He Xueqing's old-fashioned phone could still barely keep up, but now the phone was useless.
They sat quietly in the dark room.
Until someone's stomach started growling.
"I'm hungry," Cen Yu said.
“Me too,” He Xueqing said.
As the day of the apocalypse drew further away, the problem of food shortages became increasingly apparent. The food they had brought with them was long gone. Cen Yu rummaged through his backpack and finally found a chocolate wafer in a hidden compartment, not knowing when it had been placed there.
Maybe it was during last year's autumn outing? Cen Yu thought, clutching the wafer.
He held it in his hand, then heard a rustling sound behind him, and soon something was handed to him, "Beef jerky."
He Xueqing handed the three pieces of beef jerky to Cen Yu, saying, "I helped someone when I was looking for water, and he gave them to me."
In the almost completely dark room, they hadn't changed their clothes for many days, and hadn't had time to fix their hair, so they could only cut it short with scissors... Cen Yu felt like she was going to rot, and He Xueqing was almost the same. Monsters were appearing more and more frequently, and almost all the facilities in the city were damaged. There was nowhere safe to take a bath, so these days they could only wipe their bodies when they couldn't stand it anymore.
"Aren't you hungry?" Cen Yu asked.
"It's alright," He Xueqing said. "I can still bear it."
They also have some compressed biscuits as emergency food, but the amount they eat each day is regulated. When they suddenly get hungry in the middle of the night, this kind of food that is regulated for how long is not suitable for filling their stomachs.
Cen Yu also handed the possibly expired wafer to He Xueqing.
"It's leftover from the last autumn outing," he said succinctly. "I forgot the expiration date; it might already be expired."
He Xueqing didn't mind. He fumbled to tear open the wrapper, broke off a piece, and handed the biscuit to Cen Yu. Cen Yu then handed him a few pieces of beef jerky.
"I still don't know what my ability is," He Xueqing said, biting into a wafer.
The cookies were very sweet, he thought. Because the two of them were so close, he could feel Cen Yu's every move.
Above her head was a plastic whale specimen. In that instant, He Xueqing suddenly felt that even if she died in this room right now, she would have no regrets.
No one can live forever, so dying at the happiest moment for him is not bad either.
Cen Yu, of course, had no idea what He Xueqing was thinking at this moment; otherwise, he would have at least called her "crazy."
He munched on a wafer, pondering how long it would take them to reach the safe zone. "Let's rest a bit more tomorrow morning," he told He Xueqing. "Then we'll head towards the safe zone."
The monster didn't come that night. In the morning, he and He Xueqing took turns sleeping for a while. After eating their daily ration of compressed biscuits, they headed in the direction where a safe zone might be established.
He Xueqing was responsible for using her "prophetic" abilities to find places where monsters might appear.
He was in charge of clearing the way.
Perhaps because he used his ability too frequently during this period, he found that the range of his ability's effect had expanded considerably.
However, when they arrived at a large supermarket, an unexpected incident occurred. They had planned to rest there temporarily—most of the food had been looted, and there wasn't much left to use. Strangely, there were hardly any people in the large supermarket.
When Cen Yu and He Xueqing entered the store, it was quiet inside.
They carefully found a secluded spot in the store, intending to rest there for a while.
The area around the store was extremely open, with few residents, and Cen Yu couldn't recall any depressions nearby, making it feel like a very safe place.
Of course, when Cen Yu commented on this incident later, he could only say that he was too naive at the time and lacked some social experience.
An empty marketplace, devoid of other survivors, is inherently the most dangerous place.
He and He Xueqing simply marked out a piece of land with a cart and shelves, and then sat down on the ground together.
Perhaps because there weren't many people in the store, there wasn't much trash on the ground besides dust and debris scattered from the shopping frenzy.
Around one in the morning, He Xueqing suddenly seemed to sense something was wrong. He grabbed Cen Yu's arm and said, "I feel something is not right."
He looked at the other end of the shelf. The store was dimly lit because of too many obstructions and because they were too far from the window, making it difficult for outside light to penetrate their position.
Cen Yu also gripped the long knife in his hand—a weapon he had picked up on the road—and looked at the other end of the shelf.
Soon, they finally realized where the problem came from...
Suddenly, a large hole appeared in the previously normal wall, and countless strange white humanoid figures emerged from it.
The location happened to be at the other end of the shelf, less than 10 meters away from them.
