The sun rose in the early morning.
A new day has begun.
Those people can finally rest, and those ghosts are finally gone.
This village is surrounded by mountains on all sides, and there is only one road leading out, which is a dirt road. It takes an hour and a half to get to the town.
The reason they were able to arrive so quickly last night was because the driver was afraid of dying.
After they woke up, the village chief arranged dinner for them: steamed buns and porridge, a bowl of cold houttuynia cordata salad, and a cold cucumber salad.
She likes the little turtle, and she especially loves houttuynia cordata.
She ate a lot, while the other two people couldn't get used to it and could only eat steamed buns.
At this time, the villagers all came, including many old women and some men.
"Thank you so much! Thank you for coming to our village to teach the children."
They all wore simple, honest smiles as they brought things from home—potatoes, cured meat, sweet potatoes, and so on. Some even carried a piece of meat. On their way back, they kept turning back, eager to eat as well.
But that won't work. Their place is too poor and too remote. It takes several hours to get there, and it's too dangerous for the children to go to school in town. There are also wild animals and floods in between.
They are happy that someone is willing to come to their village to teach the children.
The others were even happier; these babies were so fair-skinned and beautiful.
They're happy, so happy.
They all came carrying their things, and the senior students were pleasantly surprised to see them.
They had heard before that there were very few teachers in the schools in the mountains, and that the people there were very simple and kind and cared a lot about the teachers.
Now that I see it, it's indeed true.
They were really warm and kind; they brought all their belongings over.
The little turtle also looked at those things, and she thought of her master's words.
"Thank you everyone, but we can't accept these things. We came here to help the children here, so we can't take your things."
The senior students also realized what was happening and said, "Yes, yes, that's not allowed."
"Yes, yes, we came here for the children, it's our duty, we can't accept this."
Everyone was very enthusiastic and said they would definitely give it to us.
"You three kids are being too polite. We are very happy and grateful that you came here."
These are all common local products. We thought that since you've come, we should offer you some of our local specialties.
Please don't feel burdened; we are truly grateful to you.
Our place is too mountainous and too poor; many people come here and leave after a few days.
We were heartbroken, but we knew it was normal; who would want to stay in this remote mountain village?
The three of them felt particularly distressed upon hearing this. Yes, life was too hard for the people here. They were too far from the city, the mountain roads were difficult to travel, and the main roads were extremely muddy, just muddy roads. They probably couldn't even walk on them when it rained.
"Not to mention those who teach children, even the wives and young men in our village have all run away. They've all left this village to go to the outside world."
Everyone thinks the outside world is better, that you can make money there. In this village, only the old and young are left.
They don't know how others feel when they come here, but at least they are genuinely moved and equally saddened at this moment.
"Alright, alright, leave your things here. Let's not talk about this anymore. I'm taking them to school."
The village chief interrupted them, saying that was enough.
The village chief took them to the school.
The school was very dilapidated, consisting of just two rows of red brick buildings that looked quite old.
One row of houses was used as classrooms, and the other row was used for living and cooking; you could see the whole thing at a glance.
You can see all of that from this place; the windows there aren't made of glass, they're made of paper.
It's really heartbreaking to see.
The windows in the other row were covered with cardboard.
The two girls shared a room, while the senior shared a room with another senior principal.
There were only four of them, leading more than thirty children.
Even though it was Saturday, all the children came today; they wanted to see what the new teacher looked like.
Yes, there were two very pretty teachers, and the other one was a man.
The old headmaster explained the basic situation to them: they only teach two subjects, math and Chinese, and if possible, physical education and music. They have basketball, and a dilapidated basketball hoop. Of course, there is no cell phone signal in their village.
If you want to make a phone call, you have to go up to the opposite hillside, where there's barely a bar of signal.
It has to be said that this is a huge challenge for the three of them.
The turtle is doing well; there are so many friends here. Look at all the ghosts outside, but there are a lot of girls among them.
Turtle plans to greet them tonight. It seems they had a lot to say to her last night, but she hasn't had a chance to ask yet.
"There aren't many children in our area, but it's not realistic for them to go to school outside."
So the school has never moved, but no one wants to come to our place; it's too remote, which is understandable. I'm very happy you came, and we're grateful no matter how long you stay.
This was the umpteenth time they had heard this, but this time it came from the principal's mouth.
"Principal, don't worry, we'll stay here for three years."
The old headmaster smiled but didn't say anything. Everyone who came here before said the same thing, full of ambition, but none of them lasted more than a month.
