Lin Jingyue sorted through the original owner's memories. Her upbringing was similar to that of most girls: a family that favored sons over daughters, an arranged marriage, and the differential treatment that had been passed down through brainwashing.
It's a tragedy no matter how you look at it.
Because they were hurt in the past, they thought their children should be the same as them, and this idea was passed down from generation to generation, which is why the concept of valuing sons over daughters has persisted.
Looking at the thin little girl in front of her, even though she wasn't her own biological daughter, after coming into this world, they were blood-related mother and daughter.
She knelt down, looking the other person in the eye, and said, "Baby, it was Mommy's fault before. Mommy didn't take good care of you. Can you forgive Mommy?"
Chen Zhaodi fidgeted with her fingers, looking at her somewhat helplessly.
Since she could remember, she had never seen her mother be gentle. In her memory, her mother always left early and returned late, never cared about her, and would never stand up for her when she was bullied.
Most of the other girls in the village were in the same situation, but some of their mothers would wash their clothes and gently call them home.
Her mother, however, was like the rice in the rice jar—not a single grain remained, as if she had vanished.
Lin Jingyue waited for a long time but did not receive an answer, but she knew that this matter could not be rushed.
"It's okay, Mommy will prove it to you. You can consider whether you want to forgive Mommy later, okay?" I called her "baby" partly to get closer to her, and partly because I really couldn't bring myself to say Zhaodi's name.
The name definitely needs to be changed, but not now. Her current thought is to get out of this environment as soon as possible; staying here will not only affect the child's mental health, but she herself will also feel disgusted.
The chubby boy in the courtyard was still crying, and Granny Chen kept cursing, making a ruckus. However, it was work time, so there weren't many people watching the play.
Lin Jingyue first comforted Chen Zhaodi, telling her not to wander around the room, and then left.
Chen Zhaodi watched her retreating figure, her fingers unconsciously twisting together. Is this what it feels like to be cared for?
"That damned good-for-nothing! Not only did he ruin my precious grandson, but he's also hiding away, too ashamed to face anyone. And the second son's wife is just as unfilial! I'll be driven to my death by them sooner or later!"
"Grandma! Waaaaah, Grandma, it hurts so much."
The chubby boy sat on the ground, crying with tears and snot everywhere. But in reality, he only had a few scrapes; with Chen Zhaodi acting as his human shield, how could he possibly get hurt?
He simply knew that the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
Lin Jingyue ignored the wailing old woman Chen on the ground and went straight to the chubby boy, grabbing his collar and lifting him up.
"If you ever dare to bully my daughter again, you'll regret it." His expression was as cold as could be.
The skinny Lin Jingyue didn't seem very imposing. The chubby boy had been bullying her at home for so long that he wasn't afraid of her at all.
Immediately, he yelled at Granny Chen, "Grandma, my second aunt is going to beat me! Grandma, please kill her!"
Granny Chen was startled and rushed over, trying to snatch the child away.
"You son of a bitch, put my grandson down right now! If he gets hurt, can you afford to pay for it? Are you trying to rebel?"
Lin Jingyue dodged the attack by stepping back, and looked at Granny Chen with a sneer, "Of course I wouldn't dare to rebel, but isn't it only right for an elder to discipline a junior? If the mother is not doing her job, then I, as the aunt, should teach her a lesson!"
"You're talking nonsense! When did it become your place to discipline my grandson? You good-for-nothing who can't even give birth to a son, if you want to discipline someone, discipline that brat of yours, make her kneel down and kowtow to apologize to my precious grandson!" Granny Chen glared at her fiercely, refusing to back down in the slightest.
"Hmph! Grandma is right. That brat has to kneel down and kowtow to apologize to me, or I won't forgive her."
Lin Jingyue was almost amused by the grandmother and grandson's words. What kind of logic was that? The perpetrator demanded an apology from the victim, otherwise they wouldn't forgive them?
Thinking back on all the harm this chubby boy had done to her daughter, she was filled with anger and slapped him across the face.
"Smack!"
It was a very loud sound, and it sounded very crisp.
Granny Chen stared at her in astonishment, unable to process what was happening until her beloved grandson's cries snapped her out of her daze.
"Waaaaah... Grandma, it hurts so much, my second aunt hit me."
"How dare you hit my grandson! I'll fight you to the death!"
"If you dare come any closer, I'll keep beating him up!"
In short, it made people afraid to act rashly.
"What do you want to do?" Granny Chen looked at her warily, but dared not move forward, fearing that her precious grandson would be hurt again.
"Nothing much, I just don't like this chubby kid and want to beat him up." It has to be said, this chubby kid is quite heavy; she could barely hold him.
Lin Jingyue likes children, but only her own. This chubby boy has bullied her daughter many times; this one slap won't even make up for it.
"Second son's wife, put my grandson down right now, or you can go back to your parents' home! I'll have my second son divorce you!"
That was exactly what I wanted.
"Fine, let's get a divorce today! Anyone who doesn't go is a coward!" Lin Jingyue shouted.
Chen Lao Er, who had just finished work and was approaching his house, heard this. The other members of the Chen family who were with him simply glanced at him calmly.
He walked into the courtyard with an unchanged expression; he had already made his own judgment on this lawsuit.
"Alright, alright, stop making a scene. That's just how my mom is. Just bear with her. She's had a tough time all these years. Can't you, as her junior, be more understanding?"
His mouth was full of fatherly slang, which was very annoying to listen to.
Lin Jingyue scoffed, "I understand your mother! It's settled then, whoever doesn't go get a divorce today is a son of a bitch!"
"Lin Qiumei! Have you been living a good life for too long? That's why you don't know your place. Get back to cooking, or I'll beat you!" Chen Lao Er felt his authority had been violated and immediately put on a fierce face.
"Stop putting on airs in front of me. If we don't get a divorce today, I'll beat up this fatso every time I see him!" She was determined to make this marriage fall apart; staying here any longer would drive her crazy.
The chubby boy: "??? Grandma, my second aunt is going to beat me up! Grandma, help me, waaaaah..."
Granny Chen was both angry and anxious. Looking at Lin Jingyue's repulsive face, she acted impulsively and shouted, "Divorce! Fine, let's divorce! Second son, if you want to stay at home, hurry up and divorce this wretched woman. I'll find you someone better!"
