"Huh? What did you say?" Lin Han didn't quite hear her murmur and asked in confusion.
"It's nothing, I was just saying you're too confident." Xiaomeng didn't voice her doubts, but instead made up a random excuse.
Xiao Meng looked at the comprehensive data about Lin Han and decided to take another look before reporting her abnormality to headquarters.
Soon, Lin Han finished eating, washed the lunchbox, picked up her notebook, and ran to ward 2-3 to take a look. She found that the man who caused trouble at the hospital in the original story was already with an old man.
But the old man's lips were chapped and he kept saying he was thirsty, but he didn't move an inch and just kept playing on his phone.
Lin Han pushed open the ward door and walked towards the old man's bed.
"Good evening, Sister Lin. Are you on duty today?" As soon as Lin Han walked in, a little girl from the next bed called out to her sweetly.
"Yes, I'm on duty today. Is Xin Xin's foot bothering you today?" Lin Han said with a smile to the little girl named Xin Xin.
"She didn't show up much today, except this morning she said her wound was very itchy," said the woman standing next to Xin Xin.
"It's a little red and swollen. Remember to avoid spicy food and change the dressing frequently." Lin Han listened to Xin Xin's mother's reply, looked at her wound, noticed the redness and swelling around it, and gave her instructions.
After finishing the examination on Xin Xin, they turned to look at the elderly man over there.
"Family member, the patient needs water. Look, her lips are so dry they're peeling," Lin Han said directly, looking at the man who was still sitting there playing games, seemingly oblivious to the world around him.
"As long as I don't die, why drink so much water every day? It's so annoying!" The man replied impatiently to Lin Han's words, then got up and went outside to play games.
The old man on the bed saw his nonchalant attitude and couldn't help but tear up.
"Sigh, this old man is a university professor, dedicated to educating and nurturing students, yet he can't even raise his own child well. Sigh," Xiao Meng sighed as she watched this scene.
“Who can argue with that? These days, it’s better for an elderly person to just pass away, lying there unable to move, while her son is only thinking about her pension,” Lin Han said sympathetically.
"Grandma Wang, how are you feeling today?" Lin Han poured a glass of water, inserted a straw, slowly rocked the hospital bed, and held the straw to Grandma Wang's lips.
Grandma Wang took a sip of water to moisten her throat, and replied through tears, "It's so uncomfortable. Lying here like this is worse than death. My whole body feels terrible."
Lin Han couldn't answer Grandma Wang's complaints, so she could only gently pat her back to help her catch her breath and prevent her from crying herself to sleep.
It took a while before Grandma Wang stopped crying.
She wiped away her tears and said in a hoarse voice, "Dr. Lin, I'm sorry to have troubled you again. Apart from my back hurting terribly lately, I'm fine."
Lin Han listened and nodded.
In fact, for someone like her, with late-stage bone cancer, the hope of a cure is slim, but her son insisted on saving Grandma Wang's life, which caused her to suffer from the pain most of the time.
Lin Han comforted her for a while, then went to check the connected equipment.
Sure enough, one of the wires was loose. This looseness meant that Grandma Wang's heart and kidney failure at night was not reported in time.
Her son was fast asleep and naturally didn't notice anything. By the time the nurses found him, it was too late to get him to the hospital.
This led to her son causing a disturbance at the hospital. Now Lin Han has tightened the wire again, so that if she experiences heart and kidney failure that night, it will be detected in time.
Only then did Lin Han feel relieved enough to return to her office, waiting for tomorrow to arrive.
As far as I can remember, the only major incident that happened during my shift tonight was the medical dispute. Now that the matter is half resolved, I don't have to worry about it anymore.
Lin Han's only worry was that even if the wire was plugged in tightly and the news could be broadcast in time, she estimated that it would be difficult to save him. He was already over eighty years old and had late-stage bone cancer, so the hope was indeed slim.
However, all of this was no longer within Lin Han's consideration; for the old man, death might be a relief.
Time passed slowly, and the hospital gradually fell silent, with only the sound of the clock ticking.
Just then, hurried footsteps sounded outside the door. Lin Han looked up and saw that it was almost time. Before the person outside could knock, Lin Han had already opened the door.
Looking out the door, the nurse, who looked anxious, asked what had happened. The nurse briefly explained the situation and then led Lin Han quickly toward the ward.
"Get him to the emergency room and call Dr. Chen from the nephrology department over, quick!" Lin Han arranged in an orderly manner.
Meanwhile, without stopping, they quickly transferred the elderly man to a trolley and, together with a nurse, pushed him towards the emergency room.
The old woman's son chased after her, calling out, "Mom, you must pull through! Mom, don't leave us, your family, behind!"
He stopped shouting when he was stopped in front of the emergency room.
Once inside the operating room, Lin Han was basically done with the rest of the work; she only needed to lend a hand. Internal medicine wasn't her domain.
As time passed, the old man's heart rate decreased until it became a flat line.
Inside the operating room, the doctor covered the elderly man with a white sheet, recorded the time of death, and finally, Dr. Chen went out to announce the patient's death.
"I'm sorry, we did our best," Dr. Chen said to the old man's son.
Upon hearing this, the old woman's son immediately launched into a tirade: "Incompetent doctor! My mother was full of energy this afternoon, how could she suddenly die? Is it a problem with your medical practices?!"
"The patient is elderly and in the late stage. We have done our best to keep him alive until now. Please accept our condolences." Dr. Chen had seen too many people like him before, and then he prepared to leave.
At this moment, the man stepped forward, grabbed Dr. Chen, and wouldn't let him leave, demanding an explanation.
Dr. Chen tried to break free from the man's grasp, but to her surprise, he suddenly locked her neck in a lock.
The surrounding medical staff rushed to pull him away, and Lin Han guessed that the security guards should be coming soon, so she stepped forward.
She quietly walked over, stood next to the man, and struck his nerves hard.
It was during this brief moment of relaxation that Dr. Chen managed to break free from his restraints.
Seeing the doctor run away, the man spotted a fruit knife with a half-peeled apple on a chair, went up to it, and snatched it.
But Lin Han knew the plot well, and when she saw that he had already taken the knife and was about to stab Dr. Chen,
Lin Han delivered a flying kick, deflecting the knife, just as the security guard rushed upstairs and pinned him down.
This finally ended the farce. "Call the police, take him to the police station, and say he intended to assault someone," Lin Han said to the security guards who arrived at the scene.
This is why Lin Han didn't remove the knife factor from the beginning, but instead had him carry a knife, so that he would come and fail to injure someone.
