Because the emperor's death was so sudden, Lin Heng began the process of succeeding to the throne before the officials could even react.
Lin Heng was not too saddened by the emperor's death; at most, he felt a little uneasy. He then arranged the enthronement ceremony in an orderly manner.
He ascended the throne the day after the emperor's death.
Lin Han found the deafening gongs and drums outside, along with the ministers' unanimous congratulatory speeches, utterly boring.
Because of the late emperor's passing, Lin Han was required to observe three years of mourning according to regulations, and was forbidden from eating, drinking, and having fun for a week. So she moved to a side courtyard to keep vigil for the late emperor.
"Princess, it's time for your meal," a maid said, bringing Lin Han her dinner.
"Okay, you may leave now." Lin Han dismissed the maid after she had finished setting out the dishes.
"I just took a look, and in the entire palace, you're the only one who's consistent inside and out," Xiao Meng exclaimed, looking at the bowl of white porridge and a few plates of vegetables in front of Lin Han.
"It's nice to change things up once in a while." Lin Han was completely uninterested in what others were doing and just slowly ate her own side dish.
While they were eating, they suddenly heard footsteps outside the window. When they looked up, they saw Wei Yucheng.
"Why climb through the window when there's a door?" Lin Han said, looking at Wei Yuchen, who was taking the unconventional route.
“I’m used to it, and I haven’t been able to change it in a while,” Wei Yucheng said as he skillfully climbed over the window and walked up to Lin Han.
Looking at Lin Han, who had lost a lot of weight, Wei Yuchen felt nothing but heartache.
"Ah Han, would you like to come to Wei Country with me for a trip? And could you help me with some things while you're at it?" Wei Yuchen sat down in front of Lin Han and asked.
"I doubt my brother will agree, and besides, I'm currently observing mourning." Lin Han really didn't want to stay in the palace anymore; the crying in the middle of the night was just too annoying.
"Your brother will agree. I'll take you out for a walk in seven days, okay?" Wei Yuchen was quite confident in Lin Heng's side, but she didn't know what Lin Han thought.
"Of course, it's really boring here."
Before, Wei Yuchen could keep me company while I played chess and so on. After he left, I could also trim the flowers and plants to pass the time.
Lin Han is going crazy because she can't do anything right now and can only stare blankly all day.
"Here, a new folk storybook. You can read it when you have nothing to do." Wei Yuchen took out the storybook from his sleeve and handed it to Lin Han to help her pass the time.
Lin Han looked at the storybook in Wei Yuchen's hand and gave him a sweet smile.
"Go and rest. You're always running back and forth, aren't you tired?" Lin Han saw the dark circles under Wei Yuchen's eyes and knew he hadn't slept much, so she quickly told him to go to sleep.
"There's a bed inside, go and rest," Lin Han said, pushing Wei Yuchen's back.
"Let's go together. Look at you, you're yawning." Wei Yuchen hadn't missed Lin Han's constant yawning, so he pulled her along towards the bed.
"Go to sleep and get some rest. You don't need to worry about me. I'll take good care of myself." Lin Han forcibly pressed Wei Yuchen onto the bed and told him to go to sleep.
Wei Yucheng was very compliant with her, and after taking off his shoes, he went to rest on the bed.
Before going to sleep, he didn't forget to pull Lin Han up as well, so that she could rest for a while too.
With the familiar scent accompanying her, Lin Han gradually relaxed and fell asleep.
As night fell, the sounds of wailing echoed from the surrounding palaces, sharp and piercing, even somewhat terrifying.
Wei Yuchen woke up when he heard the sound. Seeing Lin Han sleeping restlessly, he quickly covered her ears to block out the shrill cries.
“No wonder, in this kind of environment…” Wei Yuchen looked at Lin Han, who was gradually calming down, and whispered a word. Then he lay down next to her, still covering her ears with his hands.
