Before the mugwort even opened its eyes, I could smell the slightly damp, grassy scent on the tip of my nose.
"ah!"
A petite girl was cautiously watching her, clutching a worn-out broom. When their eyes met, the girl hurriedly covered her mouth, clutching the broom even tighter.
Ai Cao sat up, feeling a little short of breath.
Scattered stones were pasted into the cracks in the wooden roof, and fragmented, pale light seeped into the cramped space through them. Around her were damp haystacks, and a thin horse, in the farthest corner, slowly chewed on hay from its trough.
Although it was small, there was no dirt or grime on the ground except for some scattered grass seeds and debris.
Ai Cao patted herself down—her long black dress reached her ankles, and she wore a tightly cinched waist. She pinched the sides of the waistband and pulled it apart slightly.
The corset in her hands turned into a tattered piece of cloth.
It was just a small piece of cloth. But when it was wrapped around her body, it made it hard for her to breathe. How annoying.
The mugwort took two deep breaths.
Her gaze fell upon the young girl who had retreated to the entrance of the stable. The girl was also wearing a long black dress with several patches on it that matched the color of the dress; she wore a clean, off-white apron around her waist.
Her eyes were a soft light blue; her long, dark brown hair was styled in soft waves and tied up with a black ribbon.
The girl hugged the broom tightly, her eyes warily fixed on the mugwort.
"Hello," said the mugwort. "I am mugwort."
As soon as she spoke, she asked the system in her mind, "Will we not be able to communicate?"
Before the system could reply, the girl said, "Hello."
Her voice was very gentle. If it weren't for the broom she was holding tightly in her hand, Ai Cao would have thought she was some little white rabbit that had wandered in.
"...You heard it too," the system said helplessly. "It's not a language barrier."
"Before you stands the heroine of this world—Lillian," the system said. "I have already transmitted the current timeline to you. Receive it."
Ai Cao agreed and began reading the description of this world.
This world has two kinds of creatures: vampires and humans. There are more humans than vampires.
The female protagonist, Lillian, is about to be abducted by the vampire, who is also the male protagonist, and taken to a magnificent castle to become a blood slave.
And from then on, she embarked on a journey of love and hate with vampires, ultimately betraying her vampire hunter companions, accepting the Embrace, and becoming a newborn vampire.
A seemingly ordinary story—
But this world began to fall apart after the female protagonist became a vampire.
The female protagonist, leveraging her vampire identity and with the male protagonist's help, rises to a high position within the vampire clan. Then, she seeks revenge for her past self, who was once human.
On Sunday, she broke into the church where the Pope was preaching... and turned the Pope into a vampire as well.
After that, the number of vampires in the world increased.
Until one day, humanity completely disappeared.
Having lost their prey and food, the vampires spent their first and last revelry on this land.
The vampires, who craved to destroy others, were finally overwhelmed by their own desire for self-destruction. In the midst of the revelry, several progenitors of the vampire race unleashed their power.
The world has been destroyed.
Ai Cao blinked, a little confused, and asked the system, "Does this female protagonist have her own complete logic?"
The system explained dryly, "Yes. Although the transition is rather abrupt, it's normal. After being transformed into a vampire, a human's soul and sanity will be corrupted."
Ai Cao thought for a moment and said, "First, we need to stop the female lead from becoming a vampire?"
The system nodded: "Today is the day she will be kidnapped by the male lead."
The mugwort nodded.
She asked Lillian, "Do you want to come with me?"
Lillian shook her head warily. She hadn't even told Artemisia her name yet, only saying, "Please leave."
But the sky outside the stable suddenly darkened.
With less light illuminating the stall, Lillian's eyes shone with an unsettling intensity. She glanced outside the stall and whispered, "Don't speak. The vampires are here."
She took a few steps toward the stable, turned around and closed the door, carefully locking it from the inside.
At first, it was just a sporadic sound of wings flapping. Then, as if a gust of wind had swept across the ground, the sound of wings became more and more frequent.
Lillian walked lightly to Artemisia's side and sat down in the hay. She was closer than before, so Artemisia could better discern the expression on her face.
Fear, confusion, helplessness.
Artemisia sighed silently in her heart.
For an ordinary farm girl, being able to remain calm in this situation is already quite remarkable.
However, a bat slipped through a crack in the wood of the roof. The elegant night elf landed on the ground and transformed into a tall, handsome young man with deep-set eyes.
His eyes had blood-red vertical pupils.
Lillian took a quiet breath.
The young man glanced at Lillian and commanded, "You will become my blood slave." His tone was melodious and rhythmic. "Become my food, my servant, and offer me eternal loyalty."
Lillian didn't speak, but Artemis sensed an overwhelming and intense fear emanating from her.
Ai Cao touched her chin and said, "I'm her older sister, I want to go too."
