Songtang tightened her grip on the mugwort.
Although she had said some impressive words beforehand, she was still a little intimidated when she actually faced her parents. Fortunately, Ai Cao was standing beside her, her warm body temperature reaching her hands.
Songtang could feel her heart being warmed by the touch of the mugwort.
She composed herself and stared intently at Master Song in front of her. The fat on his round cheeks jiggled, and his eyes, hidden by overlapping eyelids, stared at Song Tang, displaying a comical sense of authority.
Song Tang thought, he was nothing like her father. The father she remembered was much taller, at least not the fat pig he looked like now.
Madam Song, standing beside him, was... completely unlike her mother. Madam Song seemed much calmer than in the morning, following closely behind Master Song, and her gaze towards Song Tang was much more complicated.
Song Tang took a breath and released Ai Cao's hand. The darkness enveloped her once again, but she was fearless.
Songtang said, "Okay."
Master Song snorted coldly, his mustache curving into a satisfied arc. He walked into the main hall with his hands behind his back. Madam Song glanced at Song Tang, hesitated for a moment, then pursed her lips and followed Master Song into the main hall.
Songtang and Aicao passed through the guards and the main hall gate together. She sat in the seat used for receiving guests in the main hall, while Aicao stood behind her with her eyes lowered.
Master Song glanced at the mugwort, then sat down in the main seat. He immediately began to reprimand her: "You are so inconsiderate."
Song Tang raised her eyelids slightly.
Master Song continued, "Do you know how much face you made me lose this morning?" He slammed his hand on the table, causing some tea to spill from the teacup. "The Song family's business has also been affected, and many rumors are circulating. What you've done has put your father in a difficult position. Tell me, how are you going to compensate me?"
Songtang remained silent.
Master Song's tone suddenly softened: "Tangtang, now your father has an opportunity..." He dragged out his words, and seeing that Song Tang had no reaction, he continued: "His Majesty heard that you have returned to the Song family and wants to see you."
"It just so happens that His Majesty's birthday banquet is tomorrow. You can come with me to the palace to attend tomorrow. Apologize to me for this matter, and I will consider it over."
After Mr. Song finished speaking, seeing that Song Tang still did not react, he turned to Mrs. Song with displeasure and said, "What are you doing standing here? As her mother, why don't you hurry up and persuade Tangtang?"
Madam Song was taken aback.
Master Song frowned, nudged Madam Song, and said, "You've gone mad just seeing Tangtang come back? Forget it, go and catch up with Tangtang, let her stay in your courtyard for the night. We'll talk about the rest tomorrow when we meet the Emperor and receive his favor."
Madam Song was caught off guard and was pushed, staggering to her feet in front of Song Tang.
She nervously wrung out her handkerchief, and after a few seconds of eye contact with Song Tang, she snorted coldly, raised her chin, and straightened her back: "Tangtang, you come with your mother first."
Songtang looked at her blood mother—she had never realized so clearly that her mother was now just an empty shell of a puppet.
Song Tang sighed wearily.
Song Tang said, "No need." She stared coldly at Master Song, who was sitting in the main seat. "Master Song seems to have misunderstood something."
Master Song frowned slightly. He was somewhat displeased that his authority had been challenged, but remembering the abruptly collapsed gate and plaque, he suppressed his displeasure for the time being.
Song Tang said slowly, "What do you think is the reason I came to the Song residence, Master Song?"
She chuckled softly: "So you think... I'm here to apologize?"
Master Song's brow furrowed even more. He sneered, "Otherwise what? You've been stealing your brother's things since you were little... If your mother hadn't secretly raised you, she would have strangled you back then!"
Song Tang smiled again. She asked, "Was it because of this that you only left me there back then?"
Master Song's expression grew increasingly cold. He said, "Otherwise what? If I had brought you with me then, your little lucky star would probably have been killed by you, this jinx!"
Song Tang glanced calmly at Madam Song.
Madam Song's previous imperious manner had completely disappeared. Now she was like an ordinary mother worried about her daughter. If she hadn't remained silent, Song Tang would have really thought that she had the courage to defy her husband.
Song Tang laughed: "I'm a jinx? My brother is a lucky star?"
Master Song snorted coldly: "Of course. Since your younger brother was born, the Song family has become increasingly powerful."
Songtang said, "I thought he and I were born at the same time."
Master Song merely snorted coldly. His mustache trembled slightly, and Song Tang finally understood Master Song's logic.
Mr. Matsushita disliked her. So even though she and her brother were born at the same time, Mr. Matsushita still considered her a jinx and her brother a lucky star.
This isn't fair, Song Tang thought. How could she have been forced to live alone in that courtyard for so many years for such a simple reason? This reason is just too... crude.
She looked at Master Song with the same fresh perspective she had when meeting him for the first time. In her eyes, he finally shrank into a fat and short old man.
Song Tang laughed. Once she started laughing, she couldn't stop. Her laughter grew from a soft chuckle to a loud, booming laugh that seemed to soar into the clouds.
After laughing enough, Song Tang wiped away the tears of laughter and asked, "What benefits will Lord Song give me when I go to see the Emperor?"
Master Song glared and puffed out his beard: "We raised you, and now you want something in return from me?"
Songtang said, "Oh."
She stood up, turned to Ai Cao, and said, "Ai Cao, let's go."
