Chapter 93 The Eight Husbands from Previous Lives' Pursuit of Their Wives (8)

Qingyun smiled and gently nudged Aicao, pushing her in front of the proprietress.

Ai Cao asked, "When you agreed to my request, did you already know you would use this method?"

The proprietress nodded mechanically. She raised her hand to support her neck, slowly stood up, and bowed to the mugwort.

The proprietress said, "There are no people in the city who specialize in collecting corpses. If we alert the authorities, things will be difficult to resolve. So I changed into shoes that would make a lot of noise and then told others that the man in black had been there."

She coughed a few more times and said, "This humble one..."

Ai Cao sighed, helped her up, and said, "Don't call yourself a villain yet." She pointed to herself, "Aren't you and I both human?"

The proprietress choked. Tears welled in her eyes, and she stood up, sobbing.

After regaining her composure, the proprietress said, "I... I thought that after suffering such an injury, I would never be able to speak again..." With tears in her eyes, she bowed to Qingyun, "Thank you."

Qingyun snorted softly, and a pair of fluffy fox ears suddenly appeared on his head.

She noticed that ears had sprouted on the top of her head in the landlady's eyes, so she quickly reached out and pressed them down.

The proprietress didn't ask any further questions, but turned to Ai Cao and said, "I have a daughter. She's still young, and although she's quite clever, she's also very mischievous. A few days ago, she said she met a white-robed immortal who wanted to take her to cultivate immortality."

"I am just a mortal and know nothing about cultivation," the landlady said. "Could you, sir, help me inquire whether such a person and such a thing truly exist?"

"What does your daughter think?" Ai Cao asked.

“I asked my daughter many times,” the proprietress said with a hint of sadness. “She only said that the other party could fly, and refused to say anything else.”

Qingyun interrupted, asking, "You two don't get along?"

The proprietress pursed her lips and said, "...Yes."

Qingyun chuckled and tugged at Ai Cao's clothes: "If the mother and daughter had a good relationship, they wouldn't have bothered to ask you. Why don't you just consider it a good deed and accumulate merit, and help out casually?"

Ai Cao glanced at her and asked, "Are you trying to accumulate merit to ascend to immortality?"

Qingyun chuckled, pretending not to hear her words. He looked around for a while before finally saying, under Ai Cao's gaze, "How could that be?"

Artemisia sighed.

She said, "I can't guarantee it, but we can try."

The proprietress finally breathed a sigh of relief. After she relaxed, the pain in her neck intensified. She coughed several times, clutching her neck, and said in a hoarse voice, "I'll go and bring my little girl to see the immortals right now."

She swayed as she turned around. Halfway around, her arm was caught by the mugwort.

Ai Cao, who was taller than her, helped her up and said, "Let's go together."

Despite the landlady's firm refusal, Ai Cao let go of her hand and followed behind her with Qing Yun. They walked out of the courtyard, turned two corners, and passed through a stone archway, stepping outside.

The proprietress kicked several piles of hay from the middle of the road to the side. She quickly spotted the broken eggshells under the hay, then used her shoe to scoop some back and cover the eggshells and egg whites.

She stopped at the entrance of a courtyard.

The mugwort asked, "Is this your home?"

The proprietress closed her eyes briefly and nodded with difficulty.

Above the small gate of the courtyard was a chicken coop made of hay. There was a hen on the coop, and a little girl underneath.

The hen raised its comb, spread its wings, and stared intently at the little girl climbing up the door.

The proprietress's voice was hoarse: "Nannan, what are you doing?"

She quickly walked to the little girl's side and pulled her down from the door frame. The little girl with two pigtails resisted a few times, but couldn't overcome her strength and reluctantly got down.

The shop owner scolded her: "I just bought you new clothes a few days ago, look at how you look in them now!"

She angrily dusted off the little girl's clothes.

Ai Cao stood aside and watched.

The shopkeeper patted two chicken feathers, three pieces of dry grass, and some dried mud that fluttered down from the little girl's clothes. Several holes were burned into the hem of the garment, though it was unclear where they had been.

The little girl grew impatient with her fiddling around and looked around with her round eyes.

She met the gaze of the mugwort.

As if only then realizing there were people around, the little girl suddenly and forcefully broke free from the shopkeeper's hand. Before the shopkeeper could scold her again, she darted behind her.

The little girl looked at the mugwort, then at the blue clouds, and whispered, "Mother, who are they?"

The proprietress blushed with anger and gritted her teeth, saying, "You little brat, come and greet the two immortals."

The little girl blinked.

She looked at Qingyun and said, "Hello, fairy sister."

The proprietress then pulled her in front of the mugwort and scolded her, "Where's the immortal? Quickly greet him."

The little girl pursed her lips and, after being urged several times by the proprietress, finally said, "Hello, sister."

The proprietress frowned. She was about to scold the little girl again, but the little girl broke free from her grasp and ran laughing into the yard.

The proprietress quickly turned around and apologized to Ai Cao: "My daughter is ignorant and unreasonable..."

Ai Cao smiled and shook her head, saying, "It's nothing."

According to the rules of this world, she is indeed not an "immortal". After all, what immortal would have neither spiritual power nor cultivation?

Qingyun laughed and said, "Your little one is indeed destined to cultivate immortality." Seeing the landlady's troubled expression, she continued with a smile, "She has beautiful eyes. Once I touch them, I'll know what her innate talent is like and what kind of immortality she's suited to cultivate."
