While instructing his men to investigate, he dialed a number himself.
"Dean Gui, I would like to know about Gui Xiaoli."
Gui Huaying was a little surprised to receive this call, but she still told her everything in detail.
"You mean she never went back to the orphanage after she turned eighteen?"
"Yes, I was a little surprised too. Given that child's personality, she would definitely come back to see us, but she hasn't even once."
Ma Zhenxing hung up the phone, feeling heavy-hearted. Gui Xiaoli had somehow slipped out of his control without his knowledge.
Now, he could only rely on family ties. Ma Zhenxing breathed a sigh of relief. Fortunately, he still had a backup plan and continued to support the welfare home. The child would be very moved if he knew.
Xiao Li received an invitation from Ma Zhenxing the next day.
She wanted to go and see what Ma Zhenxing had to say.
"Your mother gave birth to you and then passed away. In my grief, I failed to take good care of you, which led to you being stolen and your whereabouts being unknown."
I've been looking for you all these years. I sponsored the welfare home because I was worried that you would end up there and wanted to make sure you were doing well without knowing it.
Thankfully, you really are in the orphanage, and you're growing up beautifully, daughter. I'm your father.
Xiao Li watched Ma Zhenxing's performance and thought it was really hard for him to come up with such a melodramatic plot.
"But I look like your wife. Could it be that I was switched with Ma Qinting at birth?"
Ma Zhenxing was taken aback, not expecting that she even knew what Fu Yue looked like, but he had already prepared his explanation.
“Your mother looks like Fu Yue, who is now my wife, which is why you look so much like Fu Yue.”
Xiao Li almost laughed. "I'm sorry, Mr. Ma, I'm already over eighteen years old and I'm independent enough not to need a guardian anymore. Go back to where you came from and don't bother me again, understand?"
Ma Zhenxing didn't expect Xiaoli to refuse. He imagined that even if they didn't immediately acknowledge each other as family, she would still be very touched.
But Xiao Li remained expressionless; no, her only expression was disdain.
"Why? The Ma family is a listed company. If you come back, you'll be the second young lady of the Ma Group."
Xiao Li scoffed, "Mr. Ma, you don't lack daughters, so why would you want me to go back? Or do you have some ulterior motive?"
Ma Zhenxing's heart suddenly raced; she was incredibly close to the truth.
Seeing that he had nothing to say, Xiao Li left directly.
Ma Zhenxing sat there dejectedly, and after a long while, he finally made a phone call.
"Dean Gui, I have a favor to ask of you."
?
Xiao Li never expected to meet Gui Huaying, the director of the welfare home, so soon.
The last person the original owner saw was her. The way she was so familiar with the village chief hurt the original owner, and her last bit of happiness was shattered.
“Xiaoli, back then you were left at the gate of the orphanage when you were very sick. Fortunately, Mr. Ma sponsored the orphanage, so I had the money to take you to the hospital. I never expected that he would be your father. What a wonderful coincidence.”
Xiao Li looked at Gui Huaying and asked, "Why? I've been by your side for eighteen years. In these eighteen years, have you never treated me sincerely?"
Gui Huaying was taken aback; she hadn't expected Xiao Li to ask that.
"Xiaoli, you're overthinking it. I just want you to have a happy home."
Xiao Li had lost her patience. "Aunt Gui, this is the last time I'll call you that. I already know about the deal between you and Ma Zhenxing."
She took a sip of water and placed the information 123 had found on the table. It included their phone calls and bank transfers over the past eighteen years, as well as photos of their private meetings.
“I don’t believe you don’t know each other, but why are you helping him lie to me? I’ve raised him for eighteen years, even a dog would have feelings for him.”
Gui Huaying looked at the photo and suddenly burst into laughter.
“You’re right. Eighteen years. I raised you for eighteen years and hated you for eighteen years, just because you are her daughter.”
Perhaps out of desperation, or perhaps because she had been holding it in for too long, Gui Huaying told everyone everything.
“We were classmates in college. Back then, I was an ugly duckling. Of all the male classmates, only Ma Zhenxing didn’t look down on me. He even bought me water and comforted me.”
"Later, I mustered up the courage to confess my feelings to him, but he was already with Fu Yue. It was all Fu Yue's fault. Ma Zhenxing only married her because her family was rich."
“You are her daughter. When I see your face, I will be reminded of her. How can I love you?”
Xiao Li can no longer look at Gui Huaying in the eye. How can there be such a logic in this world?
"Have you ever considered that Ma Zhenxing pursued Fu Yue because she was rich?"
"Impossible. Ma Zhenxing said that he likes someone like me, full-figured and elegant, not someone like Fu Yue who is frail and delicate."
Xiao Li sighed, "Another one with a love-struck mind. It seems that love-struck people exist at any age."
"Dean Gui, I understand now. You don't deserve love at all. You don't even understand what kind of person Ma Zhenxing is, yet you're aiding and abetting evil. You deserve to die."
