Xiao Li went to the kitchen to help, and as she looked at the snake meat, many cooking methods came to mind.
"It would taste even better if stewed with chicken."
Li Meiling glared at her, "It's not a holiday, and you still want to eat chicken? You must be dreaming."
Xiao Li smiled too. Given the difficult conditions, they really shouldn't push their luck. With so many delicious foods, it was already quite a feast.
Meng Zhongyi heard this, and after looking at the hen running around happily outside, he hesitated for a moment, but still went to catch it.
"Old Meng, why are you catching chickens? There are only two chickens, and we rely on them to lay eggs for food."
As Meng Zhongyi picked up the knife, he explained, "This chicken isn't laying eggs, so let's just kill it. I'll go catch a few more chicks tomorrow."
"Two are perfect for Xiao Li, then they can raise two more, and they'll have eggs to eat when they're older."
Li Meiling glanced at her daughter, saw her innocent expression, and reluctantly agreed.
"You just spoil her. She's so old. You still let her kill chickens if she wants to."
Meng Zhongyi smiled. If he doesn't spoil his own daughter, who will?
He worked quickly, soon filling a bowl with chicken blood and then boiling water to pluck the feathers.
"I'll cut this chicken in half and send it to Xiaofei later. It'll be a good way to nourish my granddaughter."
Li Meiling nodded, put the contents in a basket, and covered it with a steaming cloth to prevent flies and insects from biting it.
Meng Xiaoyu walked in. "I'll take it to my older sister now, so she can have dinner when she gets back."
Li Meiling handed him the basket, put a bowl of lobster tails in it, and then Meng Xiaoyu ran off with the basket.
Meng Xiaofei married into the next village, so it only takes about an hour to get there and back.
Xiao Li asked Wang Hongguang to start the fire while she cooked, and kicked Li Meiling out.
She wanted to try and see if she could recreate the recipe in her head; she felt she could.
Sure enough, when Meng Xiaoyu returned, she smelled a rich fragrance in her yard.
"Second sister, it smells so good."
Xiao Li rewarded him with a piece of chicken and asked him to serve the dishes. The family then enjoyed a sumptuous lunch.
In the afternoon, Xiaoli walked ahead, supporting her pregnant belly, while Wang Hongguang followed behind, carrying peanuts. The two went home together.
As soon as she reached the village entrance, she heard a commotion and craned her neck to look.
A man was carrying a large bag on his back, two bags in his hands, and another bag hanging on his chest; he looked quite comical.
He was followed by a woman with a student-style haircut, wearing a green military uniform and carrying a canvas bag. She looked quite familiar.
"Isn't this Xie Meili? Why is she back?"
Xiao Li suddenly realized that this person was her good friend Xie Meili. No wonder she looked so familiar.
She quickly went over to say hello, after all, they were good friends.
Xie Meili saw her but didn't say anything. She just quickened her pace to catch up with the man in front of her and entered a tiled house.
Xiao Li carefully observed the house, which was considered quite nice for the village. Thinking that Xie Meili might have just returned and still needed to unpack, Xiao Li didn't go in to disturb her and turned to walk home.
"Hey, Xie Meili is back? Wasn't she so smug? Well, now she's back to playing in the mud."
Looking at Wang Hongguang's gloating face, Xiao Li began to question her friendship with Xie Meili.
In her memory, the two had a very good relationship, so she believed Xie Meili when she said that Wang Hongguang was a good person.
Their relationship progressed smoothly, partly because of Xie Meili.
However, given Wang Hongguang's character, he can hardly be considered a person of high moral character or gentle and considerate, which shows that Xie Meili was not telling the truth.
What exactly happened back then? Why did Xie Meili speak well of Wang Hongguang in front of me?
Many possibilities flashed through Xiao Li's mind. She walked quickly home, and locked the door as soon as Wang Hongguang entered.
Upon seeing this, Wang Hongguang chuckled.
"Wife, what are you doing? It'll look bad if others see us. Let's wait until it gets dark..."
"Shut up!"
Xiao Li shouted loudly, which startled Wang Hongguang, who thought Xiao Li was angry and embarrassed.
He chuckled again, "Alright, alright, I won't say anything more. My wife can do whatever she wants."
Xiao Li rolled her eyes at his unserious behavior.
"I have something to ask you."
When Wang Hongguang realized his wife was about to ask him a question, he became more serious.
"you say."
Why did you pursue me in the first place?
Wang Hongguang was taken aback. "Didn't you take the initiative to say you wanted to be my girlfriend?"
Wang Hongguang looked smug as he reminisced about the past.
"It's all because of my damn charm."
He flicked his hair, curled his lips into a wicked smile, and gave Xiaoli a wink.
Xiao Li wished she could go blind immediately, and she slapped Wang Hongguang on the shoulder.
"Be normal."
