Chapter 11: Educated Youth Sent Down to the Countryside (10)

Lin Qian walked in the group, her two small bags standing out in stark contrast to the numerous pieces of luggage belonging to the others, which attracted the attention of many people.

"Lin Qian, why are you carrying so little luggage?" a burly educated youth asked curiously. His face was covered in sweat, and the luggage in his hands seemed like it could collapse under his weight at any moment.

Lin Qian smiled slightly and said calmly, "I've mailed all my other luggage, it's more convenient that way."

This answer surprised everyone around, and some of them then showed expressions of envy.

"Oh, that's a great idea! Why didn't we think of that?" a girl said, looking at the bags in her hands with a regretful expression on her face.

Some people were skeptical, since mailing luggage at this time was not an easy task.

"Did it really get mailed? Is it reliable to mail it now?" a bespectacled educated youth muttered under his breath.

Lin Qian was unaffected by these doubts. She simply smiled faintly and offered no further explanation. She knew in her heart that she had 003's system backpack, and all her belongings were properly stored, so there was nothing to worry about.

As Lin Qian walked, she observed the people around her. Some were complaining about their heavy luggage, their steps growing heavier; others were discussing their upcoming rural life, their voices filled with unease and anticipation.

"I don't know what life will be like in the countryside. Just carrying all this luggage is exhausting me," one of the educated youth sighed.

“Yes, I wonder what the conditions will be like where we’re going,” another educated youth chimed in.

The group arrived at the office for educated youth, the room filled with a musty, old atmosphere. The person in charge sat at his desk, looking at them with a serious expression. His eyes revealed an air of authority, making the educated youth feel a little nervous.

"Everyone, please be quiet. We're about to assign you your destinations." The person in charge's voice echoed clearly and forcefully in the room.

The educated youth waited anxiously for their fate to be decided. Lin Qian gripped her luggage tightly, silently praying that she would be assigned to a relatively better place. Her eyes were filled with anticipation, but also tinged with a hint of unease.

Just then, the door was pushed open, and the brigade leader and an old cart driver walked in. The brigade leader was tall and rugged, with a resolute look in his eyes. He exuded a strong aura that was impossible to ignore. The old cart driver, on the other hand, looked somewhat weathered, the wrinkles on his face seeming to tell stories of bygone years. His eyes shone with a gentle light, making one feel a sense of warmth and kindness.

"Is everyone here?" The captain's voice was loud and powerful, as if it could penetrate people's hearts.

The person in charge nodded and said, "Let's begin." Then, the person in charge picked up the list and started calling out names.

"Zhao Yu, Su Yao, Liu Cui, Lin Qian, you will all be assigned to Heihe Village." The person in charge's voice rang out in the room, clear and forceful.

Upon hearing his name called, Zhao Yu replied with a firm look in his eyes, "Okay, I'm ready." Tall and robust, he exuded a sense of stability and reliability. His gaze revealed anticipation for the future and a determination to meet challenges.

With a smile, Su Yao replied cheerfully, "No problem, I'm willing to go to Heihe Village." Her eyes were filled with curiosity and anticipation for the new environment. Su Yao was a cheerful girl who always faced life's changes with a positive attitude.

Liu Cui seemed quite excited, eagerly saying, "That's great! I believe I can make a difference in Heihe Village." A shrewd glint shone in her eyes. Liu Cui was a quick-witted person; she was always looking for opportunities, hoping to realize her value in a new environment.

Lin Qian nodded and said calmly, "I will try my best to adapt to life in Heihe Village." Although her expression was calm, she had her own plans in mind. Lin Qian was a thoughtful person; she knew that in this unfamiliar place, only by adapting to the environment could she better survive.

Subsequently, the person in charge began to assign other educated youth to surrounding villages.

"Li Yang, you have been assigned to Qingshan Village."

"Here!" Li Yang shouted in response.

"Wang Ting, go to Lushui Village."

"Okay," Wang Ting replied.

"Zhang Peng, go to Huanghua Town."

"Yes!" Zhang Peng's voice was loud and clear.

The brigade leader looked at the group of people assigned by the educated youth office: Liu Hao, Zhao Yu, Su Yao, Liu Cui, Lin Qian, and Zhao Xiaoxuan. His brows furrowed, and a hint of helplessness and worry appeared on his face.

The brigade leader recalled that when the first group of educated youth arrived, he was filled with anticipation and joy. He believed that these young people from the city were knowledgeable and cultured, and would surely bring new vitality and hope to the village, helping the villagers improve their lives and increase production efficiency. He had imagined that the educated youth would teach the villagers to read and write, impart some advanced agricultural techniques, and make the village more prosperous and powerful.

At that time, the brigade leader was overjoyed to welcome the educated youth. He personally led the villagers to prepare accommodations for the educated youth, clean their rooms, and prepare a sumptuous meal for them, hoping that they could adapt to rural life as soon as possible. However, reality dealt him a heavy blow.

When the educated youth arrived in the village, they greatly disappointed him. Most of them were completely ignorant of farming and had no understanding of rural life and agricultural production. When asked to farm, they either buried the seeds too deep, preventing them from germinating, or overwatered, making the land muddy and hindering crop growth. Moreover, they often displayed a pampered and spoiled nature during labor, complaining of being tired after only a little work and unwilling to endure hardship.

What troubled the brigade leader even more was that these educated youths were also making the village girls do chores for them. Some of the educated youths even made unwanted advances towards the girls, causing strong resentment among the villagers. The villagers began to feel disgusted and resistant towards the educated youths, which put the brigade leader in a very difficult position. He had to appease the villagers while also finding ways to educate and manage these educated youths, putting him under immense pressure.

Several educated youths, finding the living conditions in the countryside unbearable, chose to marry local young men or women. This situation greatly troubled the brigade leader. He understood that these marriages were not entirely based on love, but rather a helpless choice made under special circumstances.

The villagers had differing opinions on this. Some believed it was a good thing, a sign of the educated youth integrating into the village; others saw it as irresponsible behavior by the youth, negatively impacting the village's atmosphere. The brigade leader faced immense pressure, having to manage the villagers' diverse opinions, soothe their emotions, and educate and control those youths who misbehaved.
