As night fell, a faint aroma of cooking filled the courtyard of the former educated youth settlement. Although the older educated youth had some complaints about the arrival of the new educated youth, they still prepared a welcoming feast.
On the table were dark brown steamed buns, wild vegetable soup, steamed eggplant, and stir-fried eggs with wild vegetables. The food didn't look appealing; the steamed buns were dull in color, the wild vegetable soup contained only a few sprigs of wild vegetables, and the steamed eggplant and stir-fried eggs with very little oil. However, for the older educated youth, this was a rare treat.
An older educated youth stood up and said, "Welcome to all of you new educated youth! My name is Li Hua, from Qingyang City. I've been here for seven years! Conditions here are tough, so this meal, though simple, is a small token of our appreciation."
Li Peng calmly said, "I am Li Peng, from Jiang City, and I have been here for five years!"
Zhao Gang said frankly, "I am Zhao Gang, from Tongshi, and I have been here for three years!"
Chen Qiang said enthusiastically, "I am Chen Qiang, from Yulin City. I have been here for two years!"
Zhou Min said with a hint of helplessness, "I am Zhou Min, from Mianyang City. I have been here for four years!"
Wang Qin said calmly, "I am Wang Qin, from Ya'an City. I've been here for three years!"
Wu Lan said gently, "I am Wu Lan, from Luzhou City, and I have been here for three years!"
Next, the new educated youth began to introduce themselves.
Lin Qian said shyly, "My name is Lin Qian, and I'm from Yuncheng. I hope you'll all take good care of me in the future."
Su Yao smiled and said, "I am Su Yao, from the capital. I am very happy to live here with everyone."
Zhao Yu added, "I am Zhao Yu, and like Su Yao, I come from Beijing. I hope we can get along well."
Liu Cui said in a carefree manner, "I'm Liu Cui, from Haishi. From now on, we're all family!"
Liu Hao said cheerfully, "I'm Liu Hao, from Binjiang City. From now on, we're all family!"
Zhao Xiaoxuan smiled and said, "I am Zhao Xiaoxuan, from Yunshan City. I hope you will take good care of me in the future!"
At this simple welcoming feast, although the food was not plentiful, the atmosphere gradually became harmonious as everyone chatted.
