"What's wrong with you? Why aren't you yelling at me?"
He asked a couple of questions cautiously, then moved the phone far away.
I felt like I was about to be met with my mother's roaring shrewish roar any second.
But actually, no, the other end of the conversation remained silent.
Chi Yuan frowned.
Why aren't you guys responding to me? Did you disconnect?
On the other end of the phone, Shen's parents looked at Shen Yulou with complicated emotions, along with the newly released paternity test results.
It's not that the connection dropped; it's because not only your paternity test results came out, but theirs did too.
But how can you just abandon a child you've raised for over twenty years?
"Come to the XX Appraisal Center as soon as possible."
After finishing his sentence, Mr. Shen hung up the phone, his tired face barely concealing the turbulent emotions churning within him.
The couple felt uneasy sitting in their private lounge facing Shen Yulou, feeling guilty and indebted, yet unsure of what to do.
Are you very sad?
Shen Yulou noticed their sadness and felt a pang of sorrow in his heart as well.
It wasn't that I felt sad because they were sad, but because I felt sad in advance because of Chi Yuan's impending sadness.
I realize I still love it too much.
He sighed, a mixture of self-satisfaction and wistfulness.
"How are your parents...to you?"
Shen's mother's voice was as light as a feather, and Shen Yulou could hardly understand what she was saying.
"Not bad, we have enough to eat and wear, and we're not lacking in material things."
"He's just too busy with work to spend time with me."
"That's good, that's good..."
Mother Shen nodded to herself, her throat already choked with sobs, and tears streamed down her face.
"Are they alright now? Do they know about this?"
"Oh, they passed away two years ago."
Seeing that his mother was shedding more and more tears because of his words, Shen Yulou hurriedly handed a few tissues to the two of them.
It was noticed that Mr. Shen's eyes had reddened at some point.
"We want to make it up to you, really..."
"It's okay, don't be too sad."
“Chi Yuan will still be your son, and his children will still be your grandchildren.”
Shen Yulou smiled gently.
Shen's parents clearly did not understand Shen Yulou's hint, and their tears fell even more fiercely.
"You...you don't mind?"
"I couldn't ask for more."
How can there be such an obedient, sensible, and understanding child?
Father Shen blinked his reddened eyes, already having a general idea in mind.
It's just unknown whether Shen Yulou will accept it or not.
Upon hearing the words "forensic center," Chi Yuan thought something had happened at home and rushed there.
They were led to the lounge by staff, where they saw their parents wiping away tears with tissues, and Shen Yulou handing them tissues.
"Mom and Dad? What happened? What's wrong with you?"
He quickly ran over to his parents, but when they ignored him, he looked at Shen Yulou with a puzzled expression.
Shen Yulou handed him the appraisal documents on the table.
Chi Yuan opened the paternity test report with practiced ease, but the document fell to the ground as soon as he let go of it.
"Whose paternity test?"
He stood there like a log, only his mouth able to move with difficulty.
"It's with your parents."
Shen Yulou reached out affectionately to touch his face.
"You're my parents' biological son, so what am I?"
"Of course you are your parents' son."
Who are my mom and dad?
Chi Yuan stared blankly, his neck turning mechanically.
"A-Yuan, they have passed away."
Shen's mother gently grasped Chi Yuan's hand.
"Then what should I do?"
"It's okay, believe me, you're still your parents' son."
Shen Yulou grasped her cold hand, and her palm began to warm up gradually.
Chi Yuan had experienced great joy and sorrow today, and he was indeed a little overwhelmed. Just then, Shen Yulou kicked a stool over from behind him.
"Sit down, let's sit down and talk, okay?"
He gently pulled Chi Yuan's hand and sat down.
