By the time Wu Chenxi returned after changing into clean clothes, the setting sun had long since disappeared, and the sky was beginning to darken. Ning Qing had already lit a fire and was adding wild grass to it to repel mosquitoes.
Hearing the approaching footsteps, Ning Qing looked up and smiled at Wu Chenxi.
Wu Chenxi watched as Ning Qing's face was enveloped in a layer of orange-red glow under the firelight, adding a hazy, radiant color to his already handsome face, making him both mysterious and alluring.
Wu Chenxi's heart fluttered slightly. She swallowed hard, turned her face away, and sat down under a large tree not far from the fire.
Ning Qing stood up, walked over, and sat down next to Wu Chenxi. Her gaze lingered on him for a moment before she looked away. She then whispered in Wu Chenxi's ear, "My handsome young master, your beauty is unparalleled in the world."
Wu Chenxi felt a little uncomfortable as Ning Qing approached. His hot breath sprayed on her face, and her ears gradually grew hot. Suddenly, she heard a soft praise in her ear, and her heart skipped a beat...
She suddenly covered her chest with her beautiful, fair hand, as if afraid that the sound of her heartbeat would reveal her hidden emotions.
Wu Chenxi shifted her body slightly, maintaining a certain distance from Ning Qing, and suppressed all her emotions, forcing herself to remain calm. She cleared her throat and said, "Your Highness is too kind. I dare not accept such praise."
Ning Qing rested her chin on her hand, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at Wu Chenxi's beautiful face, and said, "You deserve it."
Wu Chenxi coughed awkwardly, her gaze shifting uncertainly, and muttered to herself, "Truly a frivolous and dissolute man."
He silently warned himself that Ning Qing was not to be trusted; such words came out of his mouth so easily, which showed that he had practiced with others quite a bit.
Seeing that Wu Chenxi was intentionally distancing herself from her, Ning Qing didn't continue to get closer. She knew when to stop and not be greedy. There would be plenty of time in the future, so why worry about not having another chance?
He crossed his arms and leaned against the tree trunk, closing his eyes to rest.
When Wu Chenxi saw that Ning Qing didn't move closer, he breathed a slight sigh of relief, but felt a strange sense of loss. Ignoring that feeling of loss, he sighed and thought: Two grown men shouldn't be involved in each other. My heart pounding today was a transgression. I should be more careful in the future.
Suddenly, she chuckled self-deprecatingly, inwardly cursing herself: Wu Chenxi, you haven't avenged your great grudge, yet you have the mind to think about these romantic and frivolous things.
Yes! I haven't yet fulfilled the vow I made at my mother's grave, so how can I let my mind wander?
The thought of the murderer who killed her mother made Wu Chenxi's face darken. One day, she would send him down to confess to her mother in person.
Looking at the blazing fire, the unwavering conviction in his eyes never wavered.
The next morning, the sun peeked out from the horizon with its large, orange-red face, and birds chirped incessantly in the branches.
Ning Qing opened her eyes irritably, her gaze sharp as she shot toward the source of the sound. Perhaps the cold light in her eyes was too chilling, startling a flock of chattering birds into flight.
The system watched this scene speechlessly from within the space, thinking to itself: These birds are far too timid. They should keep chirping and challenging the host; that would be much more fun.
Ning Qing turned her head to look at the place where Wu Chenxi had rested last night, but there was not a single person in sight on the green grass.
Ning Qing asked the system in her mind: Cat, when did Wu Chenxi leave? She hadn't noticed at all.
System: It's been almost half an hour since you left.
Ning Qing: What a pity about last night's opportunity; we ended up accomplishing nothing.
The system in space didn't know whether to be glad that the mission target had escaped the host's clutches or to feel sorry for the host for wasting such a good opportunity.
The system's feelings were incredibly complex.
