It took a long time for Di Xiu to teach Wood to control his mental power; he didn't finish until the midnight bells rang and the banquet ended.
001 smacked his lips and sighed, "This is truly the worst class you've ever taught."
After leaving the palace, Di Xiu learned from 001 that Wood had killed his wife, who refused to leave him, because of his mental power. That's why he withdrew from the battlefield and lived in seclusion, and nothing major would happen to him again.
He made an unprecedented appearance today, but most people only exchanged a few pleasantries before avoiding him. A marshal who hadn't shown his face in a long time was less popular than Di Xiu, a newly appointed general, because his overflowing spiritual power made those of lower rank feel uncomfortable.
“If you teach him, it will be difficult for him to rise to a higher position again,” 001 said with some concern.
"But he can go back to the battlefield."
The original owner's mission was indeed to become a marshal, but in his eyes, what he cared more about was dealing with the Zerg. If the human side improved, the Zerg would become weaker.
...
Early the next morning, Di Xiu went to visit Marshal Wood.
The latter had already composed himself. Upon seeing the uninvited guest on the monitor, he immediately opened all the doors and dispatched a hovercar.
The manor was so large, yet there was no human presence. Everywhere you looked, there were robots with various functions. Everything was so exquisite yet cold, making one sigh in disbelief.
Marshal Wood instructed the family robot to prepare tea for the guests, then vigorously rubbed his cheeks, softening his hard facial features, though he couldn't help but feel a little uneasy.
After the person came in, he invited them to sit down and asked about their preferences. He then had the family robot bring over some herbal tea, though the cup wasn't very elegant; it could easily be used as a pen holder.
"Marshal, please turn off all electronic devices."
Wood couldn't figure out what this trend was for a moment, but seeing that he had turned off his personal terminal, he pondered for a moment and then chose to believe him. After all, with his strength, he didn't need to fake anything.
"General Shen Yun, state your reasons."
Di Xiu pushed the box in his hand in front of him. The words "nutrient supplement" clearly visible on the outer packaging made this solemn gesture seem somewhat ridiculous.
Marshal Wood opened it with some skepticism, only to find it empty.
Just as I was about to ask, I saw the young man in front of me take out a UV hand flashlight from the spatial button; it was the kind with adjustable wavelengths.
When the frequency was adjusted to ultra-high, a small, transparent worm that looked like a dead insect was revealed inside the box. It resembled a hydra and, under the ultraviolet light, it had a crystal-like texture.
Wood looked at him questioningly, but Di Xiu didn't keep him in suspense.
"Parasitic insect species".
After saying that, he picked up the flower tea and slowly drank it. He was a little thirsty after working all night.
Wood's cheeks were taut, his brow furrowed, and his expression grave.
He unconsciously picked up his cup to moisten his dry throat, but his heart, which had been tempered by countless trials, couldn't help but tremble. He instantly thought of many things, including the origin of the Zerg.
In a single night, or at most seven hours, the furthest they could possibly go is a round trip to the satellite base. Shen Yun had only recently arrived on the capital planet; where could he possibly find such a thing?
So many people last night were pillars of the empire, of illustrious status; this thing most likely came from one of them.
But he had faced countless Zerg, witnessed countless Zerg evolutions and countless traits, and this was... unheard of.
But if even someone with his level of mental strength couldn't see it, then it's indeed impossible for him to hear it. Who could possibly discover this parasitic species?
Marshal Wood put down his cup, calming the turmoil in his heart, his gaze sharp as lightning: "Do you know what you're saying?"
"nature."
Wood's brown eyes stared intently at him, still unable to read his thoughts, but he subconsciously believed that a man like him wouldn't lie about something like this.
After a long while, feeling slightly frustrated, he looked down at the box, extended his mental energy, and tried to control it within the box's range, but he could not "see" anything, only emptiness.
He reached out and plucked a flower from the vase on the table. He used the stem to poke at the insects inside, and found that the little insects were like phantoms. He could clearly see their antennae trembling slightly, but he could not touch them at all.
"If you can't touch it, how did you manage to lock it in the box?"
"It's not that it's untouchable; you've been deceived by your eyes."
Wood frowned even deeper, determined to try and adjust the wavelength of the ultraviolet lamp, but he couldn't see anything at any wavelength except for ultra-high frequency.
Everything seemed to suggest that this was merely a special and sophisticated projection.
Seeing that he had finished, Di Xiu put down the empty cup and said, "I have now suppressed its mental field. Try again."
Wood looked down and felt as if his eyes were being dazzled by the ultraviolet light. He saw that the insect had moved and was visible to the naked eye after the light was turned off. His mental power was finally able to detect the subdued fluctuations.
Deceived by the eyes...
Wood couldn't help but smile wryly; he had actually been fooled by a bug.
He sat up straight, unconsciously displaying respect. Seeing that Di Xiu had finished his cup of flower tea, he called the family robot, then remembered that the robot was already turned off. Putting aside his status, he got up and refilled the water for him.
Both of them were quite natural, and Wood felt less awkward. He gestured for them to proceed and said, "General Shen Yun, please explain the details."
Di Xiu recounted his discovery from the previous night and made no attempt to conceal the subsequent events: "After leaving the palace, I followed one of the people and extracted this from his mind."
However, since it's his first time doing such delicate work, that unlucky guy's mental strength might decline a bit, and it's also uncertain whether it will damage his brain.
It's probably better to have something on the left or right than to have a worm in your brain.
Wood saw his self-righteous and unashamed attitude, and his eyes and mouth twitched slightly, his heart wavering.
Can he really be a good marshal?
But after thinking about it, there really wasn't a better way.
Wood leaned forward slightly: "Of those people yesterday, how many were parasitized?"
"Including those under your command, there are 23 people, all of whom hold important positions."
What are you planning to do?
Di Xiu remained silent for a moment, then leaned forward, his usually calm eyes appearing incredibly sincere: "How about you handle the follow-up?"
Wood had a subtle feeling. After thinking about it for a while, he realized that he had not only been turned into the host, but also seemed to have become the subordinate of the person in front of him, dealing with things that the person did not want to deal with.
"If this matter is resolved, your achievements will be greatly enhanced."
"Dealing with them is troublesome."
"..."
The reason was so compelling that Wood had to admire his courage and, after confirming with him several times, nodded in agreement.
He doesn't need that much time.
The two talked about the known people involved and the proposed solutions until the evening.
Actually, it's simple in a way.
There is a type of shackle specifically designed for prisoners, which can suppress the wearer's mental power. If modified and strengthened, it can suppress the mental power of everyone indiscriminately, thus exposing the parasitic species.
The specific details and how to improve it are left for the specialized researchers to figure out; as for how to persuade the king, that's Marshal Wood's job.
