Chapter 259 The Fox Spirit Who Repays a Kindness (1)

"call out--"

As soon as Di Xiu entered the world, a sense of crisis erupted in his heart. He seemed to hear the sound of arrows cutting through the wind. He subconsciously rolled on the ground, and a pain that went straight to his soul immediately came through his body. His limbs went weak and he fell to the ground. The arrow was stuck right where he had been lying.

Limbs?

He stood up, dizzy and disoriented. Without thinking, he rolled three or five times and hid behind a tree. Another arrow came, but missed.

His keen ears caught the bowstring being pulled again, along with the slow approach of footsteps. Impatient with the entanglement, he separated his consciousness from his body and attacked the archer. Another arrow flew off at an off-target, a heavy object fell to the ground, and then there was no more sound.

A healing potion appeared out of thin air. Di Xiu lowered his head, picked it up, bit the packaging, and drank it.

With his physical condition slightly improved, he quickly climbed up a large tree with the help of his remaining instincts. The sense of crisis disappeared, and he finally relaxed a little.

Hidden among the dense foliage, he finally noticed that he was now a four-legged beast, his fur dirty, black and curly, as if he had been electrocuted.

Beneath the charcoal black, a faint red glow could be seen; its four paws trod on the snow, yet were already covered in grime.

According to my divine sense, this body is a fox.

Looking again at the direction from which the arrow had come, there was a middle-aged man. Judging from his attire, he was probably a hunter. He was wearing a round-necked, open-fronted shirt, a tiger-skin skirt around his waist, a machete hanging from his waist, ordinary hemp shoes on his feet, an arrow basket on his back, and a bow in his hand.

Unsure of the rules of this world, Di Xiu didn't kill the person earlier, but only knocked them unconscious.

This is a forest, and there are faint traces of lightning strikes on some of the nearby trees, and the ground is covered in dust.

The sky above was clear and blue, revealing nothing. He closed his eyes and sensed that there was still lingering aura of tribulation lightning in the world. He realized that the original owner of this body had been trying to cultivate into a spirit and had attracted tribulation lightning when he reached the right time. However, judging from the current situation, it seemed that he had not been able to overcome it.

Because he discovered that he could not transform into human form.

Ignoring the hunter, Di Xiu familiarized himself with the way he walked on all fours and moved to the middle of a tree branch to avoid falling off accidentally. This was how 001 transmitted the world line and the original body's memories.

The original owner was a fox spirit who had cultivated for nearly three hundred years. She was a wild fox living on a nearby mountain called Half Moon Mountain.

There were other demons on the mountain. A weasel spirit who called himself Huang San saw that he was all alone and felt sorry for him. He taught him how to absorb the moonlight. He also saw that his four hooves were snow-white, so he called him Si Bai (Four White) when he called him. Over time, he began to call himself Hu Si Bai (Hu Four White).

When a demon transforms into human form, it must undergo a tribulation of lightning or seek a title from someone. Huang San sought a title after reaching a certain level of cultivation, but failed twice. The third time, he was even more unlucky, encountering a foul-mouthed person who said he looked like a donkey dung ball. Needless to say, the result was predictable.

Having learned from past mistakes, Hu Sibai was still apprehensive and chose the obviously dangerous lightning tribulation. He failed the tribulation, but thanks to a spiritual herb he had inadvertently swallowed years ago, he barely survived, though his cultivation level was reduced to less than one-tenth.

He was preparing to return to the mountains to resume his cultivation when he encountered the hunter from before. His physical condition was poor, and while dodging, he rolled down the slope beside him and passed out. He then met a passing scholar.

The scholar, seeing his pitiful state, tucked him into his bosom and took him away, allowing him to escape the pursuing hunters.

The scholar's name was Xu Liang. He was a poor scholar who lived in Xu Family Village at the foot of the mountain. His only family member was his blind mother, Xu Jinshi.

He didn't have the money to find a doctor for Hu Sibai, but he figured he might have been injured by lightning. So, following a folk remedy he'd heard about, he found some herbs in the back mountain, boiled them into a soup, and fed it to Hu Sibai.

It's hard to say how effective the medicine was, but Hu Sibai wasn't poisoned to death and woke up after ten days.

Hu Sibai had heard Huang San say that demons cannot owe people karma, and he also thought that this scholar had saved his life and prevented him from being captured by the hunters, so he decided to stay and repay the debt of gratitude.

At first, he was in poor health and could only find some wild fruits. Later, as he gradually became able to run and jump, he caught pheasants and rabbits to give the mother and son a treat.

Seeing his extraordinary intelligence, Xu Liang and Xu Jinshi grew fond of him and no longer treated him like an animal, but as a family member who could sit at the table with them.

Xu Liang planned to take the imperial examination to become a scholar, but he had a grudge against the county magistrate's son and was repeatedly tripped up by him. Others who were not as good as him passed the imperial examination, but he was still only a scholar.

Upon hearing this, Hu Sibai went and gave the magistrate's son a good scare. Xu Liang was indeed quite talented and successfully passed the imperial examination.

He was handsome and well-educated, and he fell in love with the daughter of a landlord in the county. However, his family was already penniless from supporting his studies, so he couldn't afford a matchmaker or a dowry, and he was too ashamed to ask for her hand in marriage.

After understanding his inner turmoil, Hu Sibai used his magic to help him capture a notorious bandit and received a substantial reward.

With Hu Sibai's help, Xu Jinshi regained her sight, and the lives of the mother and son gradually improved. Xu Liang also got engaged to the landlord's daughter.

Once someone becomes a successful candidate in the imperial examinations, they are no longer considered a commoner and even the county magistrate has to give them some respect. Xu Liang originally thought so too, but Hu Sibai's "omnipotence" made him even more ambitious.

He wants to participate in next year's imperial examination.

Hu Sibai had heard Huang San say that the capital city was under the emperor's nose and protected by dragon energy, and that demons would die nine times out of ten if they went in, so he refused to go with them.

Having no other choice, Xu Liang bid farewell to his mother and fiancée and set off alone.

But Hu Sibai was still worried, and after thinking it over, he followed after them.

Although he was secretly following him, Xu Liang noticed him. The latter's previous displeasure immediately dissipated. He took advantage of the absence of others to call him out and hide him in a trunk until they reached the outskirts of the capital.
