Chapter 69 The Most Tragic Childhood Sweetheart in History (2)

In the western hemisphere of Earth, vampires and humans coexist.

Three hundred years ago, vampires ravaged the land. Humans rallied a group of warriors and waged a ten-year war against them, finally establishing a treaty of peaceful coexistence. The most important clause stipulated that vampires could not arbitrarily hunt and kill humans, but could only drink animal blood; otherwise, humans had the right to exercise the right of judgment (execution).

Generally speaking, apart from being whiter and having a lower body temperature, vampires are indistinguishable from other types of people by appearance alone.

The unusual thing is that it can conjure up demon wings, and when it becomes extremely ferocious, it will show its fangs and its eyes will turn red—the last one doesn't really matter, since there are quite a few red-eyed people in this world anyway.

Unable to hunt humans, vampires gradually faded from public view and became urban legends.

However, in the shadows, vampires still occasionally cause trouble. The bolder ones knock people unconscious and suck a little blood to taste, or steal blood from hospital blood banks. The extremely bold ones simply suck people dry... These situations are repeatedly prohibited but not stopped, so the Guardian Alliance changed its name to the Blood Hunter Alliance, secretly maintaining the surface peace.

This is the background of the story.

The original owner of this body, Zhong Yi, was a rare sight among the colorful world, with black hair and amber eyes. His ancestors came from an ancient family with a long tradition on the Eastern Continent. Three hundred years ago, they were invited to help in the war, fell in love with a local girl, and settled down there, raising their children and multiplying.

The Zhong family had always maintained a place in the Blood Hunter Alliance thanks to their ancestral skills, until his parents' generation died in a mission when he was seven years old.

This unique setting is unusual no matter how you look at it, but Zhong Yi is not the protagonist, but the female lead's childhood friend, a male supporting character whose fate is destined to be tragic.

He is 17 years old this year. Relying on his family's secret manual, he has become an excellent blood hunter through his own exploration. After hearing that a student at Rose Academy had been killed by blood-draining, he and another elder were ordered to infiltrate and investigate.

The female lead was originally in the same school as him, but after she found out he had transferred schools, she quietly followed him there.

The female lead, Ariel Kollridge, is one year younger than Zhong Yi. She lost her parents when she was three and later lived with her aunt, whose house was next to Zhong's.

Originally, the two families were not close and had no interaction. However, after the original owner lost his parents, little Ariel felt sorry for him and went to comfort him. His aunt also felt sorry for him and often invited him to eat together, which is why they became close.

Zhong Yi is more mature than his peers. While other children like to bully those they like, he is gentle and considerate, which makes him stand out. In addition, he is good-looking and always keeps himself clean and neat.

Ariel had loved following him around since she was little and was very dependent on him. As she grew up, she gradually developed girlish feelings.

Zhong Yi only treated her as a younger sister, maintaining a gentlemanly demeanor while being close to her in daily life. This prevented her from having the opportunity to confess her feelings, leaving her in a state of unrequited love.

About two months after they enrolled at Rose Academy, the protagonist, Locke Albert, woke up from his long slumber and, on a whim, wanted to experience the atmosphere of the school. He had a descendant named Layton who was doing well in human society, so he put him in the academy.

Upon entering the school, accompanied by the principal, the female protagonist happened to run past him. She accidentally stepped on a pebble and fell, scraping her knee and drawing blood. A very enticing aroma wafted out.

Locke, who hadn't had any meat in so long, almost got teary-eyed. He immediately decided to join the female lead's class and study her. His topic was: Why is this woman's blood so damn sweet?

Zhong Yi is good-looking, has a good temperament, and is elegant. He topped the list of school heartthrobs less than two months after enrolling in school—although he was quickly overtaken by the male lead.

Ariel was only good-looking, but not particularly outstanding. Yet she got so close to Zhong Yi that many girls were jealous of her and started bullying her, threatening her not to tell Zhong Yi.

Then she really didn't say anything, and Zhong Yi didn't have time to ask.

After Locke enrolled in school, he accidentally witnessed her being bullied. However, when the girls saw him, they pretended to be ladylike and stopped. He was intrigued by her restrained demeanor.

After bumping into them again, he taught those girls a lesson and discovered that she was suffering all this because of a boy. He also found that no matter what she was wronged about, she would never tell that boy, acting like a fangirl. He felt inexplicably annoyed.

001 attributes this to the male protagonist's inexplicable self-confidence, which manifests when someone is in front of him but he is still thinking about someone else he feels is inferior to him in every way.

The two quickly became acquainted through the "hero saves the damsel in distress" trope.

Zhong Yi was a year ahead of the other two, and they rarely saw each other on weekdays. He would wait for Ariel at the gate after school every day, and spend the rest of his time investigating the campus vampire case—although he hadn't found anything yet.

When another victim appeared, he and another Blood Hunter disguised as a teacher rushed to the scene, only to run into Locke. However, Locke had enrolled in school later than Zhong Yi, so they became suspicious but did not investigate further.

When Ariel caught up with Zhong Yi, they learned that Locke and Ariel were classmates.

Then, once again, Ariel became the victim.

Because they calculated the timing, Zhong Yi and another blood hunter knew that the vampires would make their move on those two days. Zhong Yi even escorted Ariel back first, but he didn't expect her to secretly follow him back to school, only to be killed.

Zhong Yi and his companion didn't have the vampires' near-radar-like sensitivity to the smell of blood. They only learned of her accident when they received the call and immediately began searching, but they were still several steps too late.

Conversely, Locke immediately recognized the scent of blood carried by the wind, rushed to save Ariel, and killed the offending vampire, thus revealing his vampire identity to Ariel.
