Being interrupted by Su Man, Zhao Chunhua forgot what she was going to say and helped Su Man untie the rope.
"Clean yourself up and come with me to toast later."
Zhao Chunhua did not forget to lock the door when she went out, for fear that Su Man would escape in the chaos.
Su Man, who finally regained her freedom, turned her bruised wrist. After regaining consciousness, she shook open the red dress.
It was just a simple red coat with crooked stitching and weird embroidered flowers.
This is not new clothes. It was worn when Li Xiang’s uncle got married last time.
Su Man put it on and put on the pants underneath. She looked like a red envelope.
The tables have been set up in the yard. There are not many people in the village, so four tables are enough.
There is no particular requirement for how many people can sit at a table. As long as there is space, everyone can sit, even those with children in tow.
They mostly communicate in dialect, with only a few words occasionally popping out.
Li Pozi pulled Li Zhuang to toast, while Zhao Chunhua stood behind and chatted with a few village women.
"Did your second son also bring back this daughter-in-law for you?" A woman wearing an orange headscarf asked while eating melon seeds.
Why do I say "again"? Because the wife of her family was tricked back by Li Xiang.
Her husband is Li Xiang’s second uncle. When Li Xiang had no money to go to school, his second uncle’s family helped him a lot, and the relationship between the two families has always been good.
Zhao Chunhua didn't hide it from her and said with a smile, "Yes, let her come out to toast later."
Second Aunt was surprised. "Toast? I heard my husband say that your Li Xiang brought her back yesterday, and you dared to let her out?"
"Oh, you don't know, the girl I brought back this time was very obedient. I coaxed her a few times and she accepted her fate without making any trouble."
When Second Aunt heard this, she even stopped eating her melon seeds and said, "Oh my god, you must have been fooled."
"Fooled? What do you mean?"
Second Aunt looked around and lowered her voice, "Let me tell you, after making a fuss for a while, my girl started to behave herself. She's completely obedient. When we do that thing, she's as obedient as a little lamb and even takes the initiative to ride on him."
"Why are you saying this in broad daylight? It's so embarrassing." Zhao Chunhua laughed shyly.
"I haven't finished yet. My silly boy thought she had come to her senses and wouldn't let me lock her up at night, saying it would delay them from having a child. But then, she sneaked away while my boy was asleep."
"Hey, now that you mention it, I remember it. It happened last year. My family went with you to arrest someone."
"That time."
Second Auntie became more and more excited as she spoke. "That damn girl is really good at running away. She ran to the town and even wanted to take the bus."
"She's such a fool, thinking she can get away just by going to town?"
"That's right. Someone actually told us as soon as she arrived in town. She foolishly got on a bus. As soon as she got on, the driver locked the door. My boy and my man caught her right away."
Second Aunt put the melon seeds into her pocket and brushed off the residue on her hands. "Anyway, let me tell you, these little girls are very smart. They pretend to want to live a good life, but in fact they just want to run away. You better keep an eye on them."
As they were talking, firecrackers were heard outside the door again, and the banquet started in the yard.
Second Aunt was afraid that she would not be able to grab the food, so she rushed over, told Zhao Chunhua to be careful, and then went to grab the food with the bowl, leaving Zhao Chunhua alone, deep in thought.
His second aunt was right. After all, she was a girl who was deceived, so he still had to be careful.
-
After the second firecracker sounded, Su Man waited for Zhao Chunhua to come in.
Don’t even mention Zhao Chunhua, there’s not even a shadow of her.
Su Man was a little puzzled. Zhao Chunhua clearly said that she would take her to toast, so why was she gone?
Just as I was thinking about it, someone turned the door lock.
But the person who came in was not Zhao Chunhua, but a young woman.
She held the child in one hand and a bowl of rice in the other.
"Who are you?"
The woman put the child down with one hand and placed the bowl on the edge of the kang before speaking.
"I'm the daughter-in-law of the old Zhao family. You can call me Xiaofeng."
Xiaofeng looked to be about thirty years old, with a slightly plump figure, but one could still vaguely see the shadow of her pretty figure.
"According to seniority, I should call you sister-in-law."
Xiaofeng pointed to the rice bowl on the edge of the kang and said, "Sister-in-law, you must have been hungry all day. Eat some rice first."
"not busy."
Su Man looked at Xiao Feng and asked, "Who asked you to come in and deliver the food?"
"My aunt asked me to come."
The auntie she was talking about was Zhao Chunhua. She explained, "My Xiaobao fell asleep, and my husband was still drinking outside, so my auntie asked me to bring him in to sleep. I thought you hadn't eaten yet, so I brought it to you. Eat it while it's hot."
The banquet here is not the kind with seven plates and eight bowls on the table. Instead, the dishes are served in a big pot, and everyone uses utensils to get the rice.
In the chipped porcelain bowl, a few dishes were piled on top of the rice.
They were mixed together so well that I couldn't tell what was what. I only knew there was meat and vegetables.
Su Man had been hungry all day and didn't hesitate to pick up the food and started eating.
While she was eating, Xiaofeng was always beside her, coaxing the child. When Su Man finished eating, she handed her the small handkerchief she carried with her.
"Sister-in-law, wipe your mouth."
"Yes, thank you."
Su Man took it, but her eyes moved around her white hands.
Tieshan Village, like some ancient and secluded places, favors boys over girls. Especially in the case of extreme labor shortage, most children have to help with housework since childhood. How could they have such white and tender hands?
