Chapter 122 Little Snowman
"sure."
Lu Mingyue pinched her little cheek, and it felt surprisingly good.
The little one has been eating and sleeping well lately, and his weight has increased dramatically. His face has also become much fuller, and it feels soft, smooth, and bouncy like pudding.
Huo Zheng only wanted to be with his wife, but he couldn't refuse his daughter's request. "Alright, let's sleep together tonight."
Lei Lei cheered and was about to run to the bed when his father grabbed his collar.
He turned around in confusion, "What's wrong with Dad?"
Huo Zheng pointed to his clothes, "We've been on the road for so long, we're all dirty. We can't just lie down on the bed, we need to take a shower first."
They brought spare clothes for the two children when they came, and they came in handy now.
Lu Mingyue took out clothes from her bag and gave Yao Yao a bath first. "We'll go first, and you can go later."
Huo Zheng's room has a private bathroom for washing and rinsing, which is very convenient.
Even in winter, there was hot water, which made Lu Mingyue very satisfied.
I remember when she went to the countryside, the winters were especially cold, and washing up was inconvenient.
They can only take a bath once every ten days or half a month, sometimes only once every two or three months, and they have to go to the town's bathhouse to do so.
In the 1970s, the Huo family was already quite well-off.
After taking a long, hot shower, Lu Mingyue felt revitalized, and much of her fatigue disappeared.
There was a radiator in the room, and she and Yao Yao sat next to it, drying their hair and looking around the room.
Huo Zheng's room was quite large and exceptionally tidy.
Against the wall stood a dark brown wooden bed, on which a military green quilt was folded neatly, just like in the army.
Even the pillows were placed perfectly aligned with the headboard, and the desk opposite the bed was spotless. On the desk were a thermos, several cups, and a small photo frame with a picture of him and Huo Feng when they were young.
The wardrobe door in the corner was tightly closed, and there wasn't a speck of dust on the top of the wardrobe. Clean clothes were draped over the wooden chair next to it, and the corners of the clothes were carefully smoothed out without a single wrinkle. Even the window glass was wiped clean and sparkling.
Lu Mingyue couldn't help but smile as she looked at the house. Just like Huo Zheng's, it was solid and well-organized.
After the father and son finished washing, the family lay down on the bed.
The two children squeezed between their parents. Huo Zheng leaned against the headboard, watching. Lei Lei gestured as if he were playing with other children on an island. Suddenly, he whispered to Lu Mingyue:
"Back in the army, I always thought that if I hadn't met you, I might have listened to my family and found a suitable person to marry. I could have lived a normal life, but it would have been less fulfilling."
Lu Mingyue turned to look at him, the moonlight shining on her face with a touch of gentleness.
"And now?"
Huo Zheng held her hand and patted the sleeping Yao Yao beside him, "Now that we have you and the children, this is what life is all about."
For the past twenty years, obtaining certification has basically been a routine of going between two points.
Aside from home, I was always in the military camp, hanging out with the uncles in the compound. Later, I was admitted to a military academy, and I spent even less time at home.
His life has been largely related to the military; he knew he wanted to take this path from a very young age.
His parents didn't have many requirements regarding his and his older brother's career plans; they left it to the children's own wishes.
Before meeting Lu Mingyue, he might have married and had children like an ordinary person, but without much joy.
Lu Mingyue woke up groggily in the middle of the night, feeling a chill on her body. She didn't know when the two little ones had rolled away most of the blankets and piled them all in the middle.
Leilei's little feet were still sticking out. Just as she was about to move, Huo Zheng quietly sat up and pulled the blanket over her.
They carefully tucked Lei Lei's feet into the blankets, and finally covered the whole family with the blankets, tucking them in tightly.
After doing all this, he lay back down next to her and gently patted her back, as if to comfort her.
Lu Mingyue leaned closer to him, feeling a sense of security from the warmth behind her.
I had a good night's sleep.
When Lu Mingyue got up, there was no one beside her, and she could still faintly hear the sounds of children playing in the yard.
She glanced at her watch; it was already past eight o'clock. She couldn't help but rub her forehead, feeling a bit of a headache.
I slept in on my very first day at my husband's family home. If word got out, people would probably laugh at me.
Although her mother-in-law was open-minded, it was still her first time visiting her husband's family, so she should at least put on a show.
It's only the first day and she's already revealed that she's someone who loves to sleep in late; she's really a little embarrassed.
Lu Mingyue had just gotten up when Huo Zheng pushed the door open and came in. Seeing that she was awake, he said, "I was just about to call you to get up for breakfast."
Lu Mingyue looked at him with some reproach, "Why didn't you wake me up earlier? It's already past eight o'clock. It would be bad if Mom and Dad saw us like this."
Last night she said she would get up early to help tidy up the house, and now look what's happened.
Huo Zheng smiled and said, "Seeing that you slept soundly last night, and the children were making a fuss all night, I wanted you to get some more sleep. Don't worry, Mom isn't the kind of person who gets angry easily."
Upon hearing this, Lu Mingyue's resentment instantly dissipated, but she muttered, "Then you have to wake me up. You can't be working while I'm sleeping."
Huo Zheng secretly chuckled when he saw her puffed-out cheeks.
When Lu Mingyue came downstairs dressed, the two children were building a snowman with Huo Li'an.
We got back too late yesterday to build a snowman, so the two kids got dressed early this morning and ran out to build one.
As Yao Yao watched her mother get up, she happily held up the little snowman in her hand, "Mom, look! This is the little snowman Dad made for me."
Lu Mingyue squatted down, clipped the stray hairs on her forehead, and wiped away her sweat. "You look really good. Your dad is quite skillful."
Upon hearing this, Yao Yao turned to Huo Zheng with even more pride and shouted, "Dad, Mom said you did a great job!"
When Zhong Yulan returned from buying groceries, she saw Lu Mingyue standing at the door wearing only a sweater and urged her to go inside and put on a cotton-padded coat.
"It's very cold outside, put on your cotton-padded coat before you come out."
Then, I casually asked, "Have you eaten yet? There's still food on the table. I didn't know what you liked to eat, so I bought some fried dough sticks, soy milk, and steamed buns. Eat whatever you like."
Hearing her mother-in-law's concern, Lu Mingyue smiled and said, her eyes crinkling into crescents, "Anything is fine, I'm not picky about food."
"Mom, I'm sorry I slept too soundly last night and overslept today," Lu Mingyue said apologetically.
Zhong Yulan never took sleeping in seriously. She wasn't the wicked mother-in-law she used to be who couldn't stand her daughter-in-law sleeping in late.
Hearing Lu Mingyue's apology, he didn't stop wiping the table, but waved his hand with a smile and said:
"Hey, what's there to apologize for? Young people need more sleep. Besides, you were on the train all day yesterday, and those two kids were restless last night. What's wrong with getting some more sleep?"
As she spoke, she turned to Li Sao in the kitchen and called out, "Li Sao, bring out the food that's been heated in the pot for Mingyue."
