Chapter 146 Confession
He looked up at Lu Mingyue with a calm expression. “We only saw them being intimate, but we didn’t hear what they were saying. What if they’re just related from the same hometown and are getting along more comfortably?”
It's true that Wang Rui has a fiancée, but did Guo Xuefu know? Perhaps Wang Rui didn't make it clear, and it wasn't that Guo Xuefu deliberately kept it from Guo Xueying.
"Then what should I do? Just pretend I didn't see it?" Lu Mingyue pressed.
"Let's observe for a few days first." Huo Zheng put the cigarette back in his pocket.
"You can usually talk to Guo Xueying, so find an opportunity to subtly ask her about it. Once you have a clear understanding of the situation, then decide whether or not to tell Guo Xueying. It's better than rashly speaking up now."
As the night breeze blew in from outside the courtyard, Lu Mingyue's inner turmoil gradually eased.
She leaned on Huo Zheng's shoulder and whispered, "You're so thoughtful. I almost acted impulsively just now."
Huo Zheng patted her hand: "The worst thing in life is to act impulsively. We can't just watch Guo Xueying suffer, nor can we wrong Guo Xuefu. We'll investigate slowly and eventually find out the truth."
After observing for three consecutive days, Lu Mingyue's doubts grew heavier and heavier.
She witnessed Wang Rui delivering things to Guo Xueying twice: once it was neatly folded fabric, and the other time it was a jar of malted milk powder.
Then I heard Guo Xueying sigh and say that her younger sister had been running around a lot lately, and she hadn't even been able to go to the county town to buy cloth as planned.
With all the signs coming together, she finally made up her mind to have a serious talk with Guo Xueying.
That evening, Lu Mingyue brought freshly steamed wild vegetable dumplings to Guo Xueying's house.
Guo Xueying was sitting under the lamp sewing when she saw Mingyue arrive. She quickly put down her needlework and said, "Mingyue, please sit down. What brings you here today?"
Lu Mingyue placed the vegetable dumplings on the table and, without beating around the bush, said directly, "Sister-in-law, there's something I want to tell you. Don't rush, let me tell you slowly."
She quietly recounted the intimate scene she had witnessed of Guo Xueying and Wang Rui talking halfway up the mountain, as well as the things she had seen the two of them doing in private these past few days.
He added at the end, "I was going to wait a little longer, but when I heard that Xuefu wasn't home, I felt really uneasy and thought I should tell you."
Guo Xueying dropped the needle and thread in her hand with a "thud," her eyes widening in disbelief: "What did you say? Xueying and Wang Rui? That's impossible."
She stood up and paced back and forth in the room, her voice trembling, "Everyone in the family compound knows Wang Rui has a fiancée. He's almost engaged, and Xueying is my own sister, how could she..."
Halfway through her sentence, Guo Xueying suddenly stopped, remembering what had happened a few days ago.
Guo Xuefu has been dressing up a lot lately. She recently changed into a new floral print shirt and asked her how Wang Rui was doing.
At the time, she didn't think much of it and just said that the person was very honest. Now that she thinks about it, what her sister's eyes were hiding was not curiosity at all, but other thoughts.
"How could this child be so foolish?" Guo Xueying was both angry and anxious, and her eyes immediately reddened.
“She just came from her hometown, and I was afraid she would be wronged, so I thought about her in everything. But she did the opposite, hiding her relationship with Wang Rui from me.”
If Wang Rui is truly interested in her, then what is his fiancée? If it's just Xue Fu's wishful thinking, how will she ever hold her head high in the compound again?
Lu Mingyue handed her a handkerchief and gently comforted her, "Don't get agitated. Maybe there's a misunderstanding. You're Xuefu's older sister, so talk to her properly and find out what's going on. She's young and might not realize the seriousness of this matter. She didn't mean to hide it from you."
Guo Xueying took the handkerchief, wiped her eyes, and took a deep breath: "Thank you, Mingyue. If you hadn't told me, I would still be in the dark."
I'll talk to Xuefu tonight and get to the bottom of this. No matter what, she needs to understand that this kind of thing can't be left unsaid.
Looking at Guo Xueying's anxious appearance, Lu Mingyue secretly hoped that it was just a misunderstanding and that it wouldn't really hurt their sisterly relationship or disrupt the peace of the family compound.
After Lu Mingyue left, Guo Xueying's steps were heavy, as if she were walking on cotton.
Just as I was wondering how to bring it up with my sister, she pushed open the door and came in, a smile on her lips, which seemed rather abnormal.
Guo Xueying saw this smile as a sign of guilt, and her anger flared up instantly.
"Xuefu, come here, I have something to ask you." Guo Xueying's voice trembled with suppressed emotion.
Guo Xuefu paused for a moment, put down her shoe and walked over: "Sis, what's wrong? Who made you angry?"
"Don't play dumb." Guo Xueying pointed at her, tears welling up in her eyes. "What's going on between you and Wang Rui? People saw you two talking secretly on the mountain, and he even gave you fabric and malted milk powder. Why did you keep all this from me?"
Guo Xuefu's face turned pale instantly, and her lips trembled as she couldn't speak.
After a long while, she replied, "Sister, I didn't mean to hide it from you. I wanted to get to know Wang Rui better and make sure we were in a real relationship before I told you."
She hadn't known Wang Rui for long and hadn't yet found out about his family background.
Before confirming whether this person was reliable, I didn't want too many people to know about this, so I didn't tell my sister either. I didn't expect that the truth would still come out.
"Are you confused?" Guo Xueying stomped her foot angrily, squatted down and pulled her younger sister up. Looking at her sister's red eyes, she felt both angry and heartbroken.
“You believe everything Wang Rui says? Everyone in the compound knows he has a fiancée, and they're about to get engaged. If he really meant it, why didn't he make it clear first? Why is he secretly seeing you instead? What does he take you for?”
Upon hearing that Wang Rui had a fiancée, Guo Xuefu's eyes widened immediately; he had never mentioned having a fiancée before.
If she had known that Wang Rui had a fiancée, she would never have anything to do with him. Even if she wanted to find a reliable man, she would never choose someone like him.
She bit her lip, tears streaming down her face even more fiercely: "I know I was wrong, but what should I do now, sister? If the people in the compound find out, how will I face them?"
"Don't be afraid, I'm here for you." Guo Xueying took a deep breath, wiped away her tears, and her eyes became firm.
“This isn’t your fault. It’s Wang Rui who’s not thinking straight. I’ll go find him tomorrow and ask him what he’s really up to.”
She helped Guo Xuefu into the house and poured her a glass of hot water: "Don't overthink it, get some sleep. No matter what, I won't let you suffer."
Guo Xuefu nodded, holding her water glass, feeling both guilty and scared.
She initially thought Wang Rui was gentle and considerate, but she never imagined there was so much trouble hidden behind it. Now, thinking back, she deeply regrets it.
Guo Xueying sat on the edge of the bed, looking at her sister's reddened eyes, and secretly made up her mind: she must find Wang Rui tomorrow and demand an explanation. She couldn't let him bully people like this, and she couldn't let her sister be unable to hold her head up in this family compound.
The next morning, Guo Xueying, seething with anger, dragged Guo Xuefu straight to the military camp.
As soon as I arrived in front of the logistics department's office building, I saw Wang Rui giving instructions to a soldier.
Guo Xueying took a deep breath and quickly stepped forward: "Comrade Wang Rui, we have something to say to you."
