Chapter 60 Equal Distribution of Rain and Dew
Fearing that there might be other leaks in the house, Wang Fengmei checked them all as well.
"Sister Wang, you've worked hard. Please sit down and have some water."
Wang Fengmei was parched, so she didn't stand on ceremony and drank the bowl down in one gulp. The sweet sugar water warmed her heart.
After helping with the chores, Wang Fengmei, worried about her two children at home, sat for a while before getting up and leaving.
"Sister-in-law Wang, wait a moment."
Lu Mingyue hurriedly came out of the house, holding a package of oil paper in her hand. "These are some sugar cakes that I made myself. Take them back for the two children to eat."
Wang Fengmei quickly waved her hand, "No, no, no, how can that be? You can keep it for yourselves."
She was just helping out casually, Lu Mingyue was being too polite.
Sugar water and sugar cakes were both expensive treats.
She just helped out casually, without thinking too much about it. They're all neighbors, so lending a hand is the right thing to do.
Lu Mingyue smiled and stuffed the oil paper into her arms, "It's all homemade, nothing precious. The children might have been frightened by the typhoon, so have something sweet to calm them down."
Wang Fengmei tried to decline, but her two children chimed in, "Auntie, please take it. We made this with Mom and are giving it to our sisters."
Wang Fengmei then accepted the gift, smiling as she said, "Then I thank you on behalf of the two children."
When she arrived at her doorstep, Wang Fengmei placed the oil paper package on the table and couldn't resist opening it to take a look.
The golden sugar cakes exude a faint sesame aroma, and are slightly bulging in the middle, resembling small ingots.
The two children in the family ran over when they smelled the aroma, their eyes sparkling.
"Mom, where did this come from?" Yu Yafei asked curiously.
"It was made by Aunt Mingyue and Leilei and Yaoyao next door, especially for you."
Wang Fengmei said with a smile, "Remember to thank them after you finish eating."
The children nodded and eagerly took a bite, the sweet aroma immediately spreading in their mouths.
Seeing their satisfied smiles warmed Wang Fengmei's heart.
After seeing Wang Fengmei off, Lu Mingyue cleaned all the doors and windows, with the two children following behind, rags in hand, wanting to help.
"The doors and windows are too high for you two to reach. Go eat some sugar pancakes instead."
The two kids loved the sugar pancakes I made a couple of days ago, so Lu Mingyue made some more yesterday.
The crispy sugar biscuits don't need to be heated; each bite is fragrant and delicious, and they taste great even when eaten cold.
Seeing that there was nothing they could do to help, the two children went back inside, each took a sugar cake, and fed the first bite to their mother.
Lu Mingyue squatted down, letting the dew soak into each bite, and took a bite from one side.
"Okay, go play now. I need to clean this place up."
After the typhoon passed, everything was under reconstruction, but the power had not yet been restored to the residential compound.
Fortunately, the well in the yard was still usable. Lu Mingyue brought over a basin of water, closed the doors and windows, poured it on the well, and wiped it dry with a cloth, making it bright again.
As the sun came out, the muddy roads in the residential compound began to harden, and people slowly started to go out.
With all the food at home finished, and knowing that Huo Zheng might come home for dinner that evening, Lu Mingyue decided to take the two children to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy some groceries.
"Mom, can we wear our new clothes?"
Leilei looked at her expectantly.
Yao Yao clutched the hem of her clothes, but her eyes held the same anticipation.
Stared at by two pairs of starry eyes, Lu Mingyue couldn't bear to say no.
"Go ahead and wear it, but be careful not to get it dirty."
The two children cheered and immediately ran back to change into their new clothes.
Before long, they came running out, all dressed neatly, chattering like two little sparrows urging each other to set off.
On their way to the supply and marketing cooperative, they met Zheng Xiulan.
She was carrying a basket of freshly bought vegetables and snacks, so she must have just come from the supply and marketing cooperative.
The two children greeted him politely, their big, watery eyes fixed on him as if waiting for something.
Zheng Xiulan noticed the clothes the two children were wearing, and she smiled and said, "Yaoyao, born in 2000, looks really good in her clothes today. Are they new?"
"Yes, yes, Mom made it for us."
When Yao Yao saw that she had noticed her new clothes, she happily twirled around in her little skirt.
"Auntie, look, there's a tiger on my clothes."
Leilei revealed his little secret.
Zheng Xiulan then noticed the small tiger embroidered on her chest. She gently touched the pattern with her fingers and said, "Did you embroider this yourself?"
Lu Mingyue: "I embroidered it myself. I was afraid the two children would mix up their clothes, so I embroidered some little things they liked on them."
Zheng Xiulan then noticed that there was also a small doll on Yao Yao's clothes, and couldn't help but admire Lu Mingyue's skillful hands.
"You're so skillful! I need to learn from you sometime." Hello.
Zheng Xiulan is good at everything, except for her handicrafts.
After so many years of marriage, she's pretty good at small tasks like sewing clothes and mending socks, but she can't do anything more delicate.
After chatting for a few minutes, she leaned closer to Lu Mingyue and whispered, "Have you heard? A family's house collapsed in the residential compound. Luckily, no one was hurt, but all their belongings were ruined."
"Is it that serious? Should we go check on it?"
Lu Mingyue was new to the area and didn't know if the family compound had such social etiquette.
Zheng Xiulan has been following behind her for so long, she shouldn't have done anything wrong.
Zheng Xiulan sighed and said, "No need."
"Zhang Haihua brought this upon herself."
Zhang Haihua?
Upon hearing a somewhat familiar name, Lu Mingyue asked the system, "System, isn't this the new supporting character you mentioned before?"
Zheng Xiulan's ears twitched slightly.
System: [Yes, but her story hasn't started yet; the host hasn't met her.]
You have to tell me what this person did, otherwise the story won't be interesting.
System: [Okay, okay, I'll give you a little spoiler. On the surface, she's a kind-hearted person in the residential compound, always smiling at everyone, but behind the scenes, she's quite the busybody. A while ago, she secretly helped a young man in the compound find a job at a factory in the city. Not many people know about this.]
Oh? Is that so? Then why did she keep it a secret?
System: [Hehe, this is interesting. Some say she did it out of personal favor, others say she was afraid of being asked for favors herself. Still others say the young man she helped has some connection with a sales clerk at our supply and marketing cooperative.]
Wow, this melon is sweet! Tell me, who was the salesperson?
System: [Well... host hasn't encountered that yet. Maybe you'll find something unexpected after visiting the supply and marketing cooperative a few more times. Friendly reminder: keep an eye on the person behind the counter who's always fiddling with an abacus.]
She had never met any of the people in the system before, and she was very curious about them.
