"Answer me."
Gu Chaoxi thought for a moment and gave a serious answer, "You're too old. You're thirty, and I'm only seventeen."
This reason both infuriated and amused Lu Zhao: "You think I'm old?"
Gu Chaoxi nodded, "You're already thirty years old and can't have children yet. If I'm with you, what will happen when you get old and your energy declines, and the emperor comes after you? What if you accidentally fall from power? The emperor has been eyeing me covetously, so what will he do to me?"
"That's only one reason. There's another reason. The Emperor promised me that he would make me Empress after I gave birth to a prince. Moreover, the Emperor is young and dashing, and I am also attracted to him."
Lu Zhao unconsciously tightened his knuckles, his eyes turned bloodshot, and even his breathing became unsteady.
He pressed her for a reason, but it was the very reason he least wanted to hear: she had fallen in love with the emperor.
He could accept that she disliked him for being old, and he could accept that she wanted wealth and luxury, but he couldn't accept that she fell in love with someone else!
"Ouch! You're pinching me too hard!" Gu Chaoxi cried out in pain.
Lu Zhao quickly let go. He couldn't see clearly in the dark, but he knew that her chin must have been red from being pinched.
His fingers traced the spot he had just pinched, and for a moment, Lu Zhao didn't know how to speak.
Gu Chaoxi began to dismiss him, "Your Highness, please go back. I'll pretend you never came tonight. And please don't come looking for me again. Men and women shouldn't touch each other, especially since this is my boudoir. In a little over a month, I will be your niece-in-law."
A single sentence shattered Lu Zhao's emotions that he had been holding back all day. He grabbed Gu Chaoxi's head with one hand and fiercely covered her soft lips that had just uttered those harsh words.
