"Let's start from here," Luo Chaoxi said, pointing to a page in the scripture.
Murong Ling glanced at it casually and then began to speak.
He spent more than a year in the temple, reading many scriptures in his spare time. This was his first time giving a sermon, but it wasn't difficult.
His voice was deep and pleasant, and he spoke at a moderate pace, effortlessly translating and explaining the obscure and difficult Buddhist scriptures in the book.
Luo Chaoxi was surprised that he could speak so eloquently and couldn't help but laugh, "I didn't expect that you would know so much before you even became a monk. After your explanation, I seem to understand all these difficult scriptures."
"You'll naturally learn it once you see it a lot."
After he finished explaining one scripture, Luo Chaoxi casually pointed to another, and Murong Ling continued explaining. Only after he had thoroughly explained both scriptures did he stop and take a sip of tea.
Murong Ling glanced at the woman who was drowsy and unaware that he had stopped listening, and found it amusing.
She didn't seem interested in Buddhism. True Buddhists usually gain a lot of insights when listening to sermons, but she almost fell asleep. If that's the case, why did she go up the mountain to worship Buddha and pray for blessings?
Luo Chaoxi only woke up abruptly from her drowsiness when Murong Ling put down his teacup with a thud.
There was nothing she could do. Although Murong Ling had a pleasant voice and spoke well, the content of the scriptures was boring, so she couldn't help but secretly close her eyes for a while.
I definitely didn't fall asleep!
"Master Jingye, are you finished speaking?"
"Was there anything I just said that you didn't understand?"
Luo Chaoxi's eyes darted left and right, looking slightly guilty. "I understand."
After finishing his sermon, Murong Ling didn't leave immediately. She tapped the table lightly with her fingertips. "When I came here, I heard you say that you came to the temple to pray for your husband?"
Upon hearing this, Luo Chaoxi's eyes darkened slightly. "Yes, half a month ago, our family suffered a great calamity, and my husband was arrested and imprisoned. But I believe that my husband was wronged. He is an upright man and would never do anything like colluding with the enemy or betraying the country."
“My mother and I are two weak women who have no access to the court and no ability to help find evidence. We can only come to the temple to pray to Buddha to protect my husband and keep him safe.”
Murong Ling noticed her luxurious attire and fine fabrics, and had already guessed that the man she was marrying was either rich or noble. He never expected that he would be a court official, one of his ministers.
He had been detached from court affairs for a long time and was unaware of which court official had recently committed a crime.
Since that's the case, he doesn't need to pretend to be a good person to gain trust. He can use whatever means are necessary to achieve his goal.
Murong Ling pondered for a moment before slowly speaking, "If I said I have a way to help you, but you have to agree to one condition, would you be willing?"
Luo Chaoxi was stunned, her eyes slowly widening. "You?"
"What, you don't believe me?"
Luo Chaoxi quickly shook her head. "It's not that I don't believe you, it's just that this matter is very serious. People in the court who are on good terms with my husband are avoiding me like the plague, and no one dares to plead for me. It all depends on how His Highness Prince Jin handles it. What can you do?"
"Could it be that you know the Prince of Jin?"
Murong Ling chuckled, "You could say that."
Immediately, he summoned a hidden guard, "Go to the Prince of Jin's residence and ask..."
He looked at Luo Chaoxi.
Luo Chaoxi quickly replied, "The Han family, my husband's name is Han Lianjing, and he is a second-rank military officer."
Murong Ling remembered this person. When he attacked the capital, Han Lianjing was a junior general under him. He performed well and made many military achievements. After he ascended the throne, he gave Han Lianjing a third-rank official position. He never expected that he would now be a second-rank official.
It turns out she was Han Lianjing's wife.
"Go and ask the Prince of Jin what happened with General Han."
"Yes!" The guard acknowledged the order and withdrew.
Luo Chaoxi's eyes lit up with hope, and she quickly grabbed Murong Ling's monk's robe sleeve, "If you can really find out the truth and clear my husband's name, I will agree to whatever you ask!"
"Any conditions are acceptable?"
Luo Chaoxi nodded affirmatively.
"If my condition is that you stay by my side and be with me, would you agree?"
Luo Chaoxi's face, which had been slightly flushed with excitement, turned deathly pale in an instant. Her eyes were filled with disbelief, and her lips moved as she asked, "What...what did you say?"
Murong Ling stared directly at her, giving her no chance to escape. "Stay by my side and I will save your husband. Even if he really is a traitor, I can still rescue him."
Whether or not you save him is entirely up to you.
Luo Chaoxi swiftly pulled her hand away from his sleeve, her eyes instantly filling with tears. She looked at him as if he were a beast. "But aren't you a monk? Monks should be free from all emotions and desires. How could you... I thought you were a good person!"
Murong Ling remained indifferent, not pressing her, and quietly waited for her answer.
After a long silence, Luo Chaoxi asked in a low voice, "What if you lie to me?"
"You'll see if I'm lying to you soon enough. It's not far from the capital. The guards will be back tonight after a round trip. You can listen to their news before making a decision."
Huaping, who overheard everything from the corner of the room, was stunned. Seeing that the lady seemed to be really going to compromise and submit to a man of unknown identity, she quickly stepped forward to dissuade her.
"Madam, please don't! There must be another way to deal with the General. You don't need to make such a sacrifice!"
"Hua Ping, as long as the general is safe and sound, I don't care about my reputation."
Murong Ling, who was sitting to the side, frowned.
He glanced at the painted screen and said, "Go and bring the dishes. It's getting dark, and your wife wants to eat."
Hua Ping glared at him angrily. How dare this scoundrel order her around?
