"Zhizhi, it's been a long time."
A voice so familiar it was ingrained in her very being. Upon hearing it, Nan Zhi felt her heart skip a beat, and her gaze towards him became complex and scrutinizing.
"Who are you?"
He is not Chu Yi.
Or rather, he is not entirely Chu Yi!
He didn't answer, but walked towards her, his gaze turning dark as he glanced at the blood beneath her.
Nanzhi watched as his long, well-defined fingers touched her brow. Instantly, as if a switch had been turned off, the pain in her lower body disappeared completely.
She looked at him in surprise. The tenderness in his eyes was almost overwhelming. "The baby won't be born for a while. I know you don't like me being around. I'll go outside and call someone. It'll be quick."
Their tone made it sound as if they had known each other for many years.
Nanzhi frowned as she watched him turn and leave, dragging two corpses with one hand as if he were just picking up some toy.
All the midwives were dead. Nanzhi thought he would call in Doctor Zhou, but instead, two unfamiliar midwives came in.
The whole process took less than the time it takes to drink a cup of tea.
Where did he find a midwife?
Without time to think, Nanzhi could only put aside her doubts and listen to the midwife's instructions to take deep breaths.
She only had slight abdominal pain, which was a sign of contractions.
Nanzhi exerted force while in pain.
Before long, with a loud cry, she saw the midwife pick up the baby.
It was washed with warm water, wrapped in a clean blanket, and presented to her.
"Congratulations, Madam, it's a beautiful little girl."
Nanzhi hugged the child, her eyes radiating maternal warmth and tenderness.
The child cried once and then stopped, staring at her with his big, grape-like eyes.
Nan Zhi touched her tofu-like face, and a shadow fell over her eyes. She looked up and saw a tall figure walking over.
She smiled, then suddenly said, "Lu Huai, come and see our daughter..."
Nan Zhi paused slightly, then looked up at him again.
There was no surprise in his eyes as he gazed back at her tenderly. "Zhizhi, let's call the child Niannian."
"Nian niang, niang niang..."
A series of fragments suddenly flashed through Nanzhi's mind.
I've already decided on a name for my daughter: Lu Nian, with the nickname Niannian, because you've always been someone I can't forget.
[Lu Huai, you must take good care of our daughter!]
【Jing, do you like me?】
Of course I like it.
"Will you marry me?"
...
Nan Zhi's heart pounded, and she looked up again, meeting his gaze.
In the instant their eyes met, Nanzhi seemed to glimpse the deep pain he hid in his heart, and his unease at the fear of making her angry.
She didn't understand why this was happening, why he had suddenly become a different person, but somehow, she couldn't get angry at him anymore, and felt a little sad inside.
Especially when looking at her daughter, the heartache seemed even more pronounced.
Chu Yi leaned over and put his arm around her. "Zhizhi, what's wrong?"
Nan Zhi looked up again, gazing at the familiar face before her. The heartache she had felt earlier was gone. She nestled in his arms, wondering why she had felt that way just now; it all seemed like a figment of her imagination.
"Chu Yi, do you think we knew each other in a past life?"
Chu Yi's expression darkened slightly. "I don't know."
She looked down at the child in her arms, "But I feel like this child is our child from a past life."
"If that's the case, then it means it's our destiny." Chu Yi kissed her forehead. "Zhizhi, don't be sad. Even if there was a past life, you didn't do anything wrong."
I was wrong, it was always me.
