Chapter 106 Mother Cheng Comes to the Door

Pei Zhi couldn't accept Du Lei's thanks.

She secretly wanted Du Lei to stay in the army, but only because she needed to complete her mission.

After leaving the ward, she was met with the hopeful gaze of Du's mother.

Pei Zhi pursed her lips and shook her head, indicating that she was powerless to help.

Mrs. Du sighed dejectedly, "Lei Zi is just as his father said, stubborn to the bone."

"Little sister, thank you for your trouble. I'm sorry to have troubled you."

"It's alright, Auntie. I have something to do, so I'll go now. I'll come see him again later."

Madam Du nodded and offered to escort Pei Zhi downstairs, but Pei Zhi declined.

Downstairs, Pei Wang was leaning against the car window smoking, looking somewhat distracted.

Upon seeing Pei Zhi, Pei Wang quickly extinguished his cigarette.

"Little sister, I'm telling you, we're doomed."

“I just came down and was chatting with the guard. He told me that a college student came to see Leizi a few days ago.”

"I was thinking, how many college students could Lei know? So I mentioned Jiang Qingyuan's name, and it really was him."

Pei Wang was like an ant on a hot pan, "Tell me, how did Xiao Jiang know we were coming to see Lei Zi?"

Pei Wang couldn't understand it at all. He and Pei Zhi were living in seclusion at home, and no one had mentioned it.

"Also, Xiao Jiang found out a few days ago, why didn't he mention it?"

Pei Wang thought that everything at home had been normal these past few days.

Jiang Qingyuan pretended not to know anything and ate and laughed with them.

I also reminded him to be careful while driving.

Pei Wang now feels terrified just thinking about it.

After Pei Wang finished speaking, he noticed that Pei Zhi didn't react at all.

"Pei Zhi!"

Pei Zhi seemed to snap out of her daze and asked, "What's wrong?"

Did you hear what I just said?

"I heard you. You said Jiang Qingyuan found out I came to see Du Lei."

Pei Wang, chin in hand, said, "No, Xiao Jiang has already noticed. You're really stubborn, aren't you afraid at all?"

"So what if he finds out? What can he do about it?"

Pei Zhi was in a bad mood, and her tone was somewhat impatient.

"Du Lei is injured and hospitalized. We've known each other for so many years, so I came to visit him. Is there anything wrong?"

Pei Zhi spoke with such conviction that Pei Wang blinked, somewhat convinced.

It seems... there really isn't a problem.

Pei Zhi just came to see Lei Zi and show concern for him. Is there a problem with that?

But Pei Wang felt something was off. Was there really no problem with this?

"Zhizhi, this isn't something you can just say is okay; Xiaojiang has to say it." Pei Wang followed Pei Zhi into the car.

Pei Zhi fastened her seatbelt and asked in return, "Has Jiang Qingyuan said anything these past few days?"

He didn't say anything, but I'm worried...

"Since he pretends not to know, then we will also pretend not to know anything, which is commonly known as playing dead."

Pei Wang was stunned by Pei Zhi's words; he admired her from the bottom of his heart.

No wonder Pei Zhi is so good at having fun. With her mindset, she'll succeed no matter what she does, right?

Pei Wang secretly vowed that he would learn a lot from Pei Zhi.

Du Lei has been in the hospital for almost a month, and his recovery is going well; his wounds have all healed.

In a regular hospital, Du Lei would have been able to go home and recuperate two weeks ago.

The military hospital was beneficial to Du Lei's physical recovery, so he stayed there.

Du Lei's injuries were not serious, and the military hospital issued a discharge certificate.

Pei Wang and Pei Zhi arrived early. Du Lei was discharged from the hospital and planned to go back to the village to recuperate for a while.

After completing the discharge procedures, Pei Wang drove Du Lei back to the village, with Pei Zhi accompanying him.

Du's mother originally thought that since no one had lived in her house for a month, it must be dirty everywhere.

Unexpectedly, when she got home, she saw that the place had been cleaned inside and out.

Pei Zhi explained, "Yesterday, my brother went back to the countryside and asked my mother to clean up."

Du's mother sighed, "Really... why be so polite? I can handle it when I get back."

Pei Wang carried his luggage in. "Auntie, my mother told me to come over for dinner. She's already prepared all the dishes."

After thinking about it, Du's mother was too lazy to make a fuss and accepted Pei's mother's kindness.

Pei Zhi and Du Lei went to Pei's house first, while Du's mother tidied up a bit.

Pei's mother was busy in the kitchen when she heard voices and quickly came out.

Upon seeing Du Lei, Pei's mother's eyes also reddened.

"It's good that you're alright, it's good that you're alright. You're a lucky child, you'll have good fortune in the future."

Pei's father also hurriedly told Du Lei to sit on the kang (a heated brick bed) instead of standing.

Pei's mother muttered, "You child, you really scared me to death! How could you get such a serious injury in the army?"

Mr. Pei glared at Mrs. Pei, "What do you know? He was honorably wounded. Didn't you see the troops came to commend him a few days ago?"

Pei's mother snorted coldly, "What's the point of rewarding someone for risking their child's life?"

"Go away, you old woman, all talk and no action. Go cook!"

Pei Zhi quickly got up, "Mom, I'll go to the kitchen with you and help out."

Mother Pei waved her hand: "You don't know any of this. Just sit down and rest."

Pei's father pulled Du Lei aside and asked about the army and missions.

Du Lei skipped over everything he couldn't say and talked to Pei's father about the army's daily training and competitions.

Every man has a burning desire to be a soldier.

Despite his advanced age, Pei's father remained the same.

Pei Wang sat down next to Pei Zhi and whispered, "I always feel that Dad prefers Lei Zi as his son-in-law."

"Look at you, when have you ever had such a pleasant chat with Xiao Jiang?"

Pei Zhi punched Pei Wang, signaling him to shut up.

Mrs. Du had almost finished packing and came over with Mr. Du.

There were quite a few people, so Pei's mother asked Pei Wang to set up a table, and they ate in the courtyard.

Pei Zhi busied herself moving chairs and getting bowls and chopsticks.

The food had just been served when there was a knock on the courtyard gate.

The person at the door shouted at the top of their lungs, "A-Wang's mother, someone's looking for you!"

Pei's mother quickly put down her chopsticks and went to open the door.

Looking at the middle-aged woman in front of her, and confirming that she did not recognize her, Pei's mother asked, "Who are you looking for?"

Cheng's mother smiled and asked, "Are you Pei Zhi's mother?"

Mother Pei nodded. "You're looking for Zhizhi? She's eating inside."

When Cheng's mother saw Pei Zhi, she rushed over and knelt down in front of Pei Zhi in front of everyone.

It all happened so fast that no one had time to react.

Cheng's mother pleaded, "Pei Zhi, it was all my fault before, I apologize to you."

“I shouldn’t have bothered you, and I even caused you to miscarry my son’s child. I’m kneeling down to apologize to you.”

"Please, go and talk to Xue Lin, and ask him to go home."

Cheng's mother knelt on the ground and talked at length.

As Pei's father listened, his chopsticks fell to the ground.

Pei Wang stood up in a panic, "What nonsense are you spouting? Get out of here and don't disturb our dinner."
