She was the best student in her grade, and she received every scholarship. The hobbies she cultivated as a child and the efforts she put in seemed to have yielded some results, such as playing the piano, which she now often performs at various school events. However, love seemed to be something that eluded her.
Seeing his friends all going out in pairs, Mu Wenxi remained single, seemingly with very few suitors.
My roommate said, "There's nothing I can do. You're too young. Any junior or senior who tries to date you would be like an old cow eating young grass. Your chances of finding a partner are in the year after next."
On this point, my roommate is quite right. Occasionally, a few freshmen like to call Mu Wenxi "senior sister" behind her back, but they are probably older than Mu Wenxi. Besides, Mu Wenxi has seen the light of the most dazzling star, so why would she be attracted by other faint lights?
My roommate said, "By the way, what about your previous crush? I remember that guy was pretty handsome."
Mu Wenxi smiled helplessly: "I've been too busy lately, I haven't had time to keep up with it."
My roommate said, "That's true. Don't rush. There will be better ones in the future. You're still young."
Since that incident, Wen Nanyin and she have been tacitly keeping their distance from each other. The phone calls they used to make every few days have now become maybe once every two or three weeks.
Even the best of friends will eventually part ways. Besides, she is of no help to Wen Nanyin now, and she can only hope that she will not cause him any trouble.
Wen Nanyin finally entered his senior year of high school. He had very little time to play on his phone, and all the little entertainment he had was devoted to Mu Wenxi. But Mu Wenxi didn't seem to need his company as much anymore.
Several times, when he opened the game software that he used to play with Mu Wenxi, the other party showed "in a game", but the person he was playing the game with was not him.
He clicked on the other person's profile picture in the chat software. Her Moments showed messages from the past month. In those unseen hidden posts, Wen Nan knew that many of her posts used to be related to him, but now, none of the posts he could see were related to him.
He opened the chat window and sent a message, "What are you doing?", only to find that the last message between them was from a month ago.
Mu Wenxi replied after a long time: "Playing with my classmates, what about you?"
"Studying".
"Good luck!"
The somewhat dry conversation left Wen Nanyin feeling uneasy. He eventually realized something and felt slightly disappointed.
But at this crucial juncture in his senior year of high school, he had to suppress any thoughts in his mind and focus on doing the things at hand well, because many people were watching him and he couldn't afford to slack off.
He decided to take the art exam. His academic scores were far ahead of other art students, even comparable to some regular students. But this was the result of countless efforts by Wen Nanyin. He was afraid of disappointing his family and friends, and his fans.
But sometimes people are like springs; the tighter they are stretched, the more easily they break.
Two months before the college entrance examination, Wen Nanyin began to lose focus in class. He was exhausted and on the verge of a breakdown. He really didn't want to do it anymore. He didn't want to go to school in the morning and asked his mother to ask for leave for him. He also started having sleepless nights.
Wen's mother and father were very worried. Even Sister Ping specially helped Wen Nanyin cancel all his schedules for the last two months, but there was nothing they could do about Wen Nanyin's condition.
He perfectly exemplified what it means for some people to even break down quietly. At first, he simply stopped studying but did other things, such as practicing calligraphy. Then he started playing the piano like crazy, as if he was expressing something.
Then he did nothing but stare at the ceiling from night to day. He rummaged through his old things and started to laugh. Finally, he went to his old house alone and said, "Don't worry, I need to be alone."
He bought the old house. There were hardly any people there. He wanted to rest. He didn't want to do anything. He just wanted to escape. He saw old photos and started to reminisce about the past. He remembered the time when he went out with Mu Wenxi in junior high school and Mu Wenxi wanted to take a photo booth picture with him.
At that time, Wen Nanyin couldn't laugh or make any gestures, so Mu Wenxi couldn't teach him personally: "Smile, Wen Nanyin, can't you laugh? You're like a robot. Look at me."
Mu Wenxi said anxiously, "Change your pose. Besides the peace sign, imitate me and say 'cheese'!"
Wen Nanyin smirked. The other party didn't seem to realize that he was doing it on purpose. Seeing Mu Wenxi jumping up and down, he felt a little happy that he seemed to be a bit naughty.
Mu Wenxi, holding the photo booth picture, said, "I hope we can stay this close forever. Will you ignore me after you become a big star?"
Wen Nanyin: "No, never. Will you look down on me when you become a scientist?"
Mu Wenxi: "Of course not, I will tell everyone that I have a big star friend."
Wen Nanyin: "Then I will tell everyone that I have a scientist friend."
The two of them burst into laughter.
Wen Nanyin suddenly realized that those times were gone forever, and he had much less contact with Mu Wenxi. What was even more tragic was that Wen Nanyin found his sadness in his powerlessness over all of this.
He and Mu Wenxi can never go back. He is now powerless to do what he once said: to let everyone know about his good friend. He has tacitly approved of their growing apart.
Looking back, he realized that Mu Wenxi was almost always the one who took the initiative in their relationship. Mu Wenxi accompanied him to the film set the first time he went to act, Mu Wenxi was there the first time fans came to pick him up at the airport, Mu Wenxi cried in Mu Wenxi's arms the first time he was criticized, and she silently cheered him on at the first fan meeting...
Mu Wenxi was involved in so many firsts. Wen Nanyin's heart tightened, and he suddenly opened his phone and sent a message to Mu Wenxi: "I want to see you."
With just four words, Mu Wenxi knew that Wen Nanyin was definitely not going to make it through when she saw the message, so she immediately dropped what she was doing and rushed over.
When the person walked up to him, Wen Nanyin realized that she was still the same person who would run to see him whenever he cried.
Wen Nanyin hadn't cried for many years. He often endured it, acting as a mature person, keeping everything bottled up inside, not even telling his parents. Sometimes when they asked, he would just lightly reply, "It will pass." But after holding it in for so long, the tears finally broke free at this moment.
Wen Nan nestled in Mu Wenxi's arms: "I'm so tired, Xixi, I don't want to do this anymore."
Mu Wenxi: "If you're tired, can you take a break?"
Mu Wenxi couldn't bring herself to tell Wen Nanyin, "I'm quitting. If you don't want to do it anymore, then don't." She knew Wen Nanyin was exhausted, but how could she just give up after all this time?
