Chapter 306 The Clever Second Male Lead in a Melodramatic Novel: 5

In the study, Mr. and Mrs. Huo sat at the table, their faces solemn.

Mrs. Huo: "The Bei family really has a good plan. They refused to send their own daughter, but instead sent their niece."

Mr. Huo took a sip of tea and put down the teacup: "I think this young girl is much better than Bei Ying before."

Mrs. Huo: "Look how thin that little girl is, she must be having a very hard time."

Mr. Huo's assistant knocked on the door of the study.

Father Huo: "Go in."

Assistant: "Mr. Huo, the documents are all here."

President Huo: "Get out."

After Huo Jiangliu asked Mu Wenxi to stay, Huo's father had someone investigate Mu Wenxi's background. Even though the girl seemed neither humble nor arrogant, they dared not leave any potential dangers around Huo Jiangliu.

Mu Wenxi's information from childhood to adulthood, including winning the first prize not long ago and moving out of her household registration book today, was written on the information in front of her.

After reading the document, Mr. Huo thought of the look in Mu Wenxi's eyes when he saw her today. This girl was more mature than her peers.

Mother Huo: "I never expected this girl to have such a hard life. How could she have such a father? Is he even her biological daughter? She's Liu'er's classmate. No wonder Liu'er was willing to let her stay earlier. I wonder if he recognized her."

Mr. Huo: "I think this child has her own plans. Let's observe her further. If she takes good care of Liu'er, I don't mind helping her out when she has difficulties in the future."

Mrs. Huo: "I quite like this girl. Bei Ying used to pester our son, but now that Liu'er can't walk, she won't even come to see him. But look, as soon as this girl came, our son was willing to sit in his wheelchair. Maybe he'll even be willing to come down for dinner later."

Mr. Huo: "Yes, don't worry, he's our son, he won't be that fragile."

The female protagonist at the center of their conversation, Mu Wenxi, was touring the Huo residence with the butler.

Butler: "This is Aunt Zhou, who is mainly in charge of housework at the Huo residence. Your room has been arranged next to the young master's room so that it will be convenient for you to take care of him. Aunt Zhou can clean the room from now on. By the way, you can call me Uncle Zhou."

Mu Wenxi understood that the two must be a couple: "Uncle Zhou, Aunt Zhou."

Butler: "This is Uncle Fatty, who manages the kitchen for the Huo residence's three meals a day. You can tell Uncle Fatty if you want anything to eat in the future."

Mu Wenxi nodded, and Uncle Zhou led her to her room: "This is your room. You can ask me for help if you need anything."

Mu Wenxi: "Thank you, Uncle Zhou."

The room was very large, much larger than the original room, and had a separate bathroom. The overall color scheme was a refreshing blue, and the bedding had been newly changed. The wardrobe next to it was also very large, though a bit empty.

"Miss, what style of clothes would you like? Madam asked me to arrange it for you."

Mu Wenxi turned around, and there was Aunt Zhou at the door: "Could you please get me a few sets of school uniforms? Thank you, Aunt Zhou."

A short while later, Butler Zhou instructed Mu Wenxi regarding the care of Huo Jiangliu: "Miss Mu, starting tomorrow, you will be in charge of taking care of the young master. The young master doesn't like others getting close to him, but for now, you only need to be responsible for his three meals a day."

Mu Wenxi: "Okay."

Uncle Zhou: "There's one more thing. Miss Mu might not be able to go to school recently. Mr. Huo has sent teachers to teach the classes, so Miss Mu doesn't need to worry."

Mu Wenxi: "Thank you."

After Uncle Zhou left, Aunt Zhou knocked on the door again and brought in all sorts of clothes, including several school uniforms: "Miss, Madam said that the young lady should dress cleanly and prettyly, so I chose some clothes for you."

Mu Wenxi nodded: "Thank you, Mrs. Huo."

The once empty wardrobe was quickly filled, and she felt that she was about to start a new life. Suddenly, she remembered her bangs and asked, "Aunt Zhou, do you have scissors? I'd like to get my hair cut."

Aunt Zhou: "If Miss doesn't mind, I can cut your hair. I cut your Uncle Zhou's hair too."

Mu Wenxi: "Okay."

Aunt Zhou brought over scissors and a barber's cape: "What kind of haircut would you like, Miss?"

Mu Wenxi: "It's fine, but these bangs are blocking my eyes."

Aunt Zhou: "How about I get some bangs?"

Mu Wenxi: "Sure, thank you, Auntie."

Mu Wenxi's hair was originally almost waist-length. Aunt Zhou cut off Mu Wenxi's dry and yellow hair, trimmed it a bit, and cut it to about shoulder length. Then she gave him a straight fringe: "All done."

Mu Wenxi opened her eyes. The little girl in the mirror looked very well-behaved. Her bangs were above her eyes, revealing her big, dark eyes. Her short hair was shoulder-length, and she looked very obedient.

The next morning, as soon as Mu Wenxi got up, washed up, and went downstairs, the housekeeper brought her breakfast and asked her to give it to Huo Jiangliu: "Miss Mu, please take care of the young master's breakfast."

Mu Wenxi: "Okay."

She stood at the door of Huo Jiangliu's room, holding the plate under her with one hand and knocking on the door with the other, but no one answered.

A few seconds later, she knocked on the door again, but there was still no response. After thinking for a moment, she turned the doorknob, pushed open the door, and looked inside.

Inside the room, the door was open, revealing the room's layout. On the right side of the bed, the blankets were bulging out, with only Huo Jiangliu's head sticking out; he was still asleep.

There was a wheelchair by the bedside, and a wardrobe on the left side of the room, but the wardrobe door was open and there were only a few clothes inside, less than Mu Wenxi's.

She gently placed the tray on the desk, walked to the bedside, and found Huo Jiangliu lying on his back with his eyes closed, his brows furrowed, and one hand sticking out to grip the edge of the blanket, indicating that he was sleeping restlessly.

Mu Wenxi called softly, "Huo Jiangliu, it's time to get up."

Huo Jiangliu didn't react. Mu Wenxi bent down with her legs against the edge of the bed, trying to wake him up, but she noticed that his eyelashes were very long. She couldn't help but reach out and touch his eyelashes with her fingertips, as if she were gently stroking feathers.

As she was admiring Huo Jiangliu's features, the person in front of her slowly opened his eyes.

Huo Jiangliu was still a little groggy when he woke up and saw a little girl in front of him. She had bangs and big, well-behaved eyes. Oh, it was the little girl from yesterday looking at him. She seemed to have gotten bangs.

"You're awake?"

Her voice was soft and gentle.

Are you getting up for breakfast?

Just as Huo Jiangliu was about to refuse, the voice in his head rang out again—that thing that claimed to be a magic artifact to ward off bad luck.

"Stand 1.5 meters away from the lucky koi and begin cleaning away bad luck."

Mu Wenxi was a little confused as to why he wasn't speaking. Did he not want to eat by himself? After a few seconds, she asked, "Do you want me to feed you?"

Huo Jiangliu suddenly turned his head: "You go out first, I'll get up and wash up first."

Mu Wenxi respected his decision and didn't ask if he needed help: "Call me when you're done."

Huo Jiangliu watched her leave until Mu Wenxi walked out of the room and closed the door.

"Distance too far, cleanup interrupted."
