Fu Yiwei stood by the window and dialed the phone: "Have you arrived yet?"
Wen Xi was making the bed: "We've arrived."
Fu Yiwei: "How's the environment?"
Looking at the somewhat mottled walls and cement floor, Wen Xi said against her will, "I think it's fine."
Fu Yiwei heard the voice on the other end of the line: "Go to sleep early, good night."
He hung up the phone, stared at the ceiling, and couldn't fall asleep for a long time. He started missing Wen Xi on the very first night she left.
The conditions in the county were average, but the air was very fresh. Wen Xi didn't care much about the external conditions; she liked the feeling here—it was peaceful and undisturbed.
The students loved the new teachers because they brought many things, such as new stationery, new books, and new and interesting knowledge.
Most of the students here are left-behind children. They don't have summer vacation and don't need it. Their families only come back for a few days during the Spring Festival. The people who spend the most time with them are their teachers and classmates.
"The conditions are much better now than before. There used to be only a few rooms here, but now a teaching building has been built."
"Thanks to the help of people from all walks of life."
She teaches the children knowledge, tells them the stories behind ancient poems, tells them about the lives of poets, and leads them to experience the charm of words.
I spend my days with the students, and my evenings are for myself, where I occasionally chat with my brother.
How are Mom and Dad?
"I'll take care of you, don't worry. You take good care of yourself."
Wen Xi relaxed and focused on her own affairs.
Two months passed quickly. Wenxi had a fulfilling time and happily carried her little schoolbag home.
Fu Yiwei was waiting at the school gate early. After not seeing him for two months, Wen Xi suddenly noticed that the man in front of her looked a little haggard.
And it wasn't the way home. When the car arrived at the hospital entrance, she suddenly had a bad feeling. She asked cautiously, "Brother, why are we at the hospital?"
Fu Yiwei drove to find a parking space: "Dad is sick."
Wen Xi suddenly became anxious: "What happened? Why is Dad sick? Why didn't anyone tell me?"
Wen Xi got out of the car and rushed into the hospital before the car had come to a complete stop.
Fu Yiwei was startled: "Be careful."
Mu Wenxi saw her father, who was lively and energetic in the hospital room: "Dad, what's wrong with you?"
Mu's father touched his nose: "Wenxi is back. It's just a little cold."
Mother Shepherd: "Look at you, why are you in such a hurry?"
Wen Xi was a little angry: "Why don't you tell me anything?"
Father: "But you were coming back soon, so I didn't say anything."
Wen Xi sighed, "You scared me to death. When I saw how haggard my brother looked, I thought something had happened to you."
Dad: "Hey, this kid."
As soon as Fu Yiwei parked the car, Wen Xi got out and ran away quickly. Before he could even park properly, he was startled and had to go find a parking space.
As soon as I came up, I saw Mu Ma secretly laughing to herself.
He walked into the ward, and his mother glanced at him and said, "Your brother is just tired from working."
Fu Yiwei looked puzzled.
Mu Ma: "Wenxi saw how haggard you looked and thought something terrible had happened to her father. She even blamed us for not telling her."
Fu Yiwei rubbed his temples. He had been exhausted lately. He had only worked at his father's company for a few days after graduation when his father fell ill, forcing him to take over temporarily. He was in a flurry of activity with a mountain of work to do at the company: "It's my fault for not explaining things clearly."
Father: "Your brother has been helping me manage the company these past few days; he probably hasn't adjusted yet."
"Do you really look that haggard?"
Fu Yiwei went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror. Uh, he hadn't shaved for several days, and his dark circles were quite heavy. He should have tidied himself up before picking up his sister. He hadn't thought of that for a moment.
Wen Xi: "Brother, why don't you go back and rest for a bit?"
Fu Yiwei shook his head: "No need." Seeing Wen Xi return suddenly filled his empty heart again.
Seeing the three of them laughing and joking, Fu Yiwei's smile returned after a long time: "I'm going to the company."
Mother Shepherd: "Be careful on the road."
Wen Xi: "Goodbye, brother."
After Fu Yiwei left, she looked at her father and asked, "Dad, are you planning to hand the company over to my brother?"
Mu's father: "Yes, actually I wanted to take a proper rest during this cold, so I stayed a few more days. I didn't expect to scare you like this. Now it seems your brother is adapting quite well."
Wen Xi: "Really! Didn't you ask me if I was willing? Who would want to manage your lousy company?"
Dad: "Hey kid, why is your company called 'Crappy Company'?"
Mother: "Your father's biggest wish is that you or your brother can inherit his company."
Wen Xi: "Can't we hand it over to someone else to manage?"
Mu's father glared at her: "You're so worried about your brother, why don't you come and help me manage the company?"
Wen Xi suddenly fell silent, and also felt a little guilty.
Mu's mother: "Do you remember when you were little, you made a birthday wish? Once your dad said he hoped you would inherit his company in the future. But you said you didn't like management, you didn't like finance, and you couldn't understand those things. Later, your dad found out that you really didn't have the brains for that."
Wen Xi: "And then?"
Mother: "Later, we just didn't expect to run into your brother. At that time, our family went on a trip, and your brother's family was in a car accident on the highway. He was the only one left sitting on the side of the road. You even gave him some food."
Wen Xi: "It seems that there is such a thing."
Father Mu: "So we got the idea of adoption, and your brother agreed. We didn't think that far ahead at the time. It was just that your brother chose finance as his major in college, so I got the idea and asked him if he was willing to inherit the company. If he wasn't, then it would be you."
Mother: "Your brother agreed because he was worried you'd get tired."
Wen Xi felt a pang of sadness; how could his brother do such a thing?
Mother: "Be nicer to your brother in the future. Look at how you used to argue with him every day when you were in the first year of high school."
Wen Xi touched her nose: "It won't happen again."
After returning home, Wenxi sat on the sofa waiting for his brother until after 9 p.m. before he came back.
Fu Yiwei pinched her nose and saw Wen Xi in the living room: "Why aren't you asleep yet?"
Wen Xi felt like crying: "Brother, why did you agree to help Dad manage the company?"
Fu Yiwei was stunned for a moment: "It's only right that Dad raised me for so many years."
Wen Xi: "Do you really enjoy managing a company? What about your dreams? Wouldn't you lose your freedom then?"
Fu Yiwei: "We're all adults now, why worry about dreams? Sometimes dreams and reality don't conflict."
Wen Xi stared at him for a while: "You're lying."
Fu Yiwei gently stroked the top of her head: "Then why don't you go? What about your dream? If someone has to inherit it, I hope that person is me. You are more important than my dream."
