Jiang Ningyuan was deeply hurt. He lost the girl who loved him. In the daily arguments, in the distrust and doubt, he was in a state of constant distrust.
Mu Wenxi returned to his seat somewhat angrily, only to see Xi Changye calmly ordering food, as if it had nothing to do with him.
Mu Wenxi: "Attack the Long Night!"
Xi Changye asked calmly, "What's wrong?"
His eyes revealed no flaws as he stared intently at Mu Wenxi. If Su Yanhe were here and saw this scene, she would definitely notice that Xi Changye's emotions were a bit off. The calmer he seemed, the more dangerous he was. But the person in front of her was Mu Wenxi, and in her anger, she felt that Xi Changye's actions were handing her over to someone else.
Mu Wenxi has always been straightforward and speaks her mind: "Why did you push me out just now? Didn't you feel uncomfortable at all?"
Xi Changye: "I thought you would want to see your old flame? He looks very sad."
Mu Wenxi felt somewhat frustrated. Wasn't Xi Changye just that kind of person? He hadn't changed all these years. She could never guess his emotions and always said the harshest things to manipulate others.
Mu Wenxi took a few deep breaths to calm herself down, looked at him, held his hand holding the menu, and expressed her thoughts: "Aye, we are already married, have you forgotten? Your current identity is my husband, and no matter who you meet, I don't want you to give me away."
Xi Changye avoided Mu Wenxi's gaze, as if his thoughts had been guessed.
Mu Wenxi continued, "Your behavior just now made me a little uncomfortable. It was like you pushed me out on your own. Did you want to watch me walk towards someone else? What you did didn't make me feel like you were making a sacrifice; it just made me feel like you didn't care about me that much."
Xi Changye's eyes flickered, and she hugged Mu Wenxi in a panic: "I'm sorry, I didn't not care about you. I was just afraid that you would leave me and go to Jiang Ningyuan like before. I didn't mean to push you away. I just thought that you might need to talk to him."
Xi Changye was used to using indifference to cover up the sadness of loss, so that no one would know he cared. He could also pretend that he had never been hurt or embarrassed. If he didn't expect anything, he wouldn't be disappointed.
Mu Wenxi: "Are you afraid I'll abandon you and go find Jiang Ningyuan?"
Xi Changye: "Hmm."
Mu Wenxi: "I don't know. Do you want to know what I said to Jiang Ningyuan?"
Xi Changye nodded.
Mu Wenxi: "I told him that the Mu Wenxi who used to like her is dead, and the current Mu Wenxi only hopes that he will not disturb her life."
Xi Changye seemed to have calmed down. He used to lose his temper whenever he was involved with Mu Wenxi. He shouldn't let go; he should hold on tight.
Xi Changye closed his eyes: "I know, I won't do it again next time, but Xixi, once I make up my mind, you can never escape again."
Those who understand Xi Changye will not think he is kind and generous. It is precisely because he loves Mu Wenxi too much that he chooses to let go. Once he holds on tightly, he may never be able to leave again. If he loses him, he may go crazy. He cannot bear the feeling of loss.
Mu Wenxi: "Aye, I've known you for so many years, but I feel like I've never really understood you."
Xi Changye: "Well, I've never really known the real you either."
Mu Wenxi smiled and said, "It seems like high school life was just a fleeting dream. We gradually got to know each other afterwards."
After this incident, their relationship improved. In Mu Wenxi's opinion, Xi Changye was a bit too anxious about gains and losses, but Xi Changye also felt a bit wronged, as he was indeed not good at expressing himself.
He racked his brains trying to figure out who to ask. Asking his subordinates would be beneath his authority, and asking his father? Forget about it. So he thought of Su Yanhe.
Su Yanhe was woken up by a phone call in the middle of the night: "Who is it? Can't a person get some sleep in the middle of the night?"
A familiar voice came from the other end of the phone: "It's me."
Su Yanhe sat up abruptly from the bed: "Xi Changye, what brings you here? What's the matter in the middle of the night?"
Xi Changye paused for a moment, unsure where to begin.
Su Yanhe: "Did you have a fight with Xiao Mu?"
Xi Changye: "No."
Su Yanhe: "You two are divorced?"
Xi Changye: "No!"
Su Yanhe: "It couldn't be that we ran into Jiang Ningyuan, could it?"
Xi Changye: "Hmm."
Su Yanhe asked with a gossipy look, "And then? And then?"
Xi Changye: "I pushed her out, and she was very angry."
Su Yanhe looked at her with exasperation: "How could you push her out like that? Don't you understand that what women care about most is a sense of security? Besides, she and Jiang Ningyuan have already broken up, and you two are married. Why did you push her out like that? What do you think she is? To other people, she'll look like you're treating her like a toy."
Xi Changye remained silent, looking as if he was accepting criticism and education. But who was Su Yanhe? He was the person who had spent the most time with Xi Changye and knew him the best.
Su Yanhe: "Xi Changye, you should learn your lesson. Think about how many times you gave her away back in high school. So it's no wonder she ended up with Jiang Ningyuan. If I weren't such a good person, who could stand you?"
As Xi Changye listened to Su Yanhe's mutterings, his memories were instantly pulled back to his high school days.
High school is the time when puberty is most likely to begin.
Wearing a school uniform, Xi Changye leaned against the corridor railing, looking at Mu Wenxi through the window.
A classmate came out and, seeing the familiar Xi Changye, asked, "Are you here to see Mu Wenxi?"
Xi Changye: "Hmm."
Classmate: "Someone is looking for Mu Wenxi."
Mu Wenxi looked up and saw Xi Changye. Overjoyed, she ran out and exclaimed, "Ah Ye, did you come to see me?"
Xi Changye, hands in his pockets, said, "By the way."
Mu Wenxi wasn't unhappy at all: "Okay."
Xi Changye looked at his toes and listened to Mu Wenxi's rambling, not knowing how to start the conversation. Actually, he had come to invite Mu Wenxi to watch his basketball game.
As the two were talking in the corridor, Jiang Ningyuan ran over from not far away: "Mu Wenxi, I'd like to invite you to watch my basketball game tomorrow! Are you free?"
Mu Wenxi did not agree directly but looked at Xi Changye.
Xi Changye felt a pang of jealousy. Noticing the gaze, he raised an eyebrow and said, "Why are you looking at me? They invited you to a basketball game."
Seeing Xi Changye's indifferent expression, Mu Wenxi turned to Jiang Ningyuan and said, "Okay, I'll go see him tomorrow."
Xi Changye clenched her fist in her pocket and then relaxed it. If it were Jiang Ningyuan, she would be a good match for him. Jiang Ningyuan's identity would allow him to stand openly by her side.
The next day, Mu Wenxi went to watch the basketball game as promised. When he arrived at the basketball court, he found two teams warming up. One of the teams had a familiar figure in it, which was Xi Changye.
Mu Wenxi then realized that Xi Changye's awkward behavior yesterday might have been an invitation for her to watch a basketball game.
