Lin Zhenzhen climbed along the tree trunk for more than half an hour, using all four feet.
She huffed and puffed as she crawled, cursing all the while.
"What kind of man is he?! He has no manners at all!"
Lin Zhenzhen was startled by Gu Zhongsheng's sudden appearance.
He was leaning against the tree trunk, arms crossed, looking at her with a grin.
What are you muttering to yourself?
"I was humming a song, but I was so tired from climbing up, so I was a little off-key." Lin Zhenzhen looked away guiltily. "I have a little donkey that I'm finally not riding anymore, la la la la~"
Gu Zhongsheng watched her act: "Aren't foxes supposed to be able to climb trees? How come you're so tired?"
Lin Zhenzhen was speechless: "Anyone can run, but you see, not everyone can run a marathon!"
She was grimacing when she suddenly saw the small treehouse behind Gu Zhongsheng and was stunned.
Did you bring this up here?
Gu Zhongsheng turned around and glanced at it, then replied, "No, it's always been here when I came to the Sidrata Forest. It's just that the giant sequoia wasn't this big back then, and the house didn't look this old either."
Gu Zhongsheng remained calm. Lin Zhenzhen didn't know when he had become a zombie, but judging from his words, it must have been many years ago.
Lin Zhenzhen pushed open the door and went inside.
Surprisingly, there was a complete set of furniture in the room: a bed, wardrobe, coffee table, and desk.
Moreover, the home decor style is consistent, and it is clear that it has been carefully coordinated.
Lin Zhenzhen noticed a wobbly photo frame hanging on the wall near the entrance, with a photograph embedded inside.
It looks like a family photo, but because it's so old, the faces in the photo are blurry and the features are hard to make out.
It was barely recognizable as a couple holding a baby, snuggling together happily.
"Could this be..." Lin Zhenzhen leaned closer to take a look and found that the date was noted in the lower left corner of the photo.
April 6, 2032, my daughter will be one year old.
This is indeed a photo taken before the apocalypse, and it's exactly one month before the apocalypse broke out.
It seems that the house wasn't moved to the tree by someone, but rather that the giant sequoia was growing right below the house.
The mutated giant sequoia grew larger and larger, eventually becoming so powerful that it lifted the entire house, transforming it into the treehouse we see today.
In a way, it also witnessed the changes in human history by chance.
Lin Zhenzhen murmured to herself, "From normal life to the apocalypse, I wonder what this family went through, and whether they survived."
“Dead.” Gu Zhongsheng said coldly.
Lin Zhenzhen turned around: "How did you know?"
“In the early days of the apocalypse, the survival rate of humans was less than one percent.” Gu Zhong’s eyes were devoid of any emotion. “Moreover, this is the West Delata Forest, the place where the first wave of mutated plants broke out.”
Lin Zhenzhen didn't say anything more. She knew Gu Zhongsheng was right, so she didn't argue with him anymore. Unexpectedly, Gu Zhongsheng became relentless.
“You are a variant, and natural animal variants can only be born in two ways.”
“You eat it, or it eats you.” Gu Zhongsheng’s eyes were filled with a mocking smile. “The former is very unlikely, because mutated foxes are very cunning, and you can’t catch it.”
“You became its food.” Gu Zhongsheng said, word by word, “In the apocalypse, humanity is so fragile and vulnerable.”
Having her most painful memories exposed, Lin Zhenzhen paused for a moment, then retorted with a calm expression.
"Yes, I became its meal, but so what? My will prevailed over its."
She straightened up, paused, and said, "The body will eventually break, but the soul will remain soaring and unyielding. Because of this, humanity will never be defeated."
After a long silence, Gu Zhongsheng chuckled softly.
"Unfortunately, no one cares whether the soul of a different species is unyielding."
"Can't I care for myself?"
Lin Zhenzhen wandered to the floor-to-ceiling window, where she could see most of the West German Rata Forest.
She saw a small potted plant on the table with a tiny green sprout emerging from the soil.
This couldn't possibly be something left behind by this family before, could it?
Lin Zhenzhen turned around: "This is you..."
"No." Gu Zhongsheng pulled out a chair and sat down, turning his head away and closing his eyes, looking as if he didn't want to answer her question.
Pshaw, who else could it be but you? Did this giant sequoia grow arms and grow some flowers and plants to play with when it's bored?
Lin Zhenzhen saw through it but didn't say anything, "Do you usually rest in this treehouse?"
"I come to take a look occasionally."
Lin Zhenzhen stepped forward and pressed the bed board. She had to admit that the industrial level before the apocalypse was really impressive. Even after so many years, the basic structure of the furniture was still solid.
"This is way too hard! Isn't there a mattress or something?"
Gu Zhongsheng opened his eyes: "Yes, there's a nest of mutated moths inside. Do you want some?"
"Then let's forget about it." Lin Zhenzhen felt her scalp tingle just imagining the scene.
She suddenly remembered that when she arrived, she seemed to see a mutated plant similar to a dandelion growing by the roadside, like a tall and long club.
She had touched this before; the fluff on it was fine and soft, and it should be quite comfortable to use as a mat.
Seeing her walking towards the door, Gu Zhongsheng called out to her, "Where are you going now?"
"I'm going to go find something."
Gu Zhongsheng stood up: "Wait, it'll be faster if I take you down."
