Lin Zhenzhen slowly slid off Gu Bosheng.
Before leaving, he didn't forget to lightly scrape his back with his hand.
Gu Bosheng lowered his eyes to look at her, his expression unchanged: "What is it?"
"...It's nothing." Lin Zhenzhen pretended not to care. "General, you just said that the giant sequoia wanted a friend. Did you mean it wanted another mutated plant?"
"That's right, it wants to find its own kind."
Gu Bosheng's expression turned somewhat solemn: "But as far as I know, it is the only mutated plant on the entire continent that possesses self-awareness."
"The only one?" Lin Zhenzhen frowned and whispered, "Then wouldn't that make him the lonely George?"
Gu Bosheng looked up at her: "What are you talking about?"
Lin Zhenzhen explained, "This is a story I read in a book before the apocalypse. George is the name of a giant tortoise."
“From his discovery in 1971 until his confirmed death in 2012, George was considered the last known individual of the Pinta Island tortoise. He was regarded as one of the rarest animals in the world,”
"When George was discovered, there was only one Pinta Island tortoise left living on the island. He was placed in the research station for the purpose of protecting it."
“From 1971 to 2012…” Gu Bosheng read out these distant and unfamiliar numbers.
"Did it live alone at the research station for 40 years?"
"That's right."
Lin Zhenzhen continued, "The average lifespan of the giant tortoise species is over 200 years, but George only lived to be over 100 years old; he died in his prime."
"When George died, he was quietly in his den, perhaps missing his homeland, his head still turned toward the waterhole where he had been resting."
Lin Zhenzhen paused for a moment: "He had no friends, no family, and not even anyone like him. That's why some people say that George died because he was lonely for too long."
Gu Bosheng lowered his eyes and reached out to touch the top of Lin Zhenzhen's head.
His eyes were clear, but something seemed to be swaying deep within them.
Gu Bosheng said meaningfully, "Loneliness is indeed a very difficult thing to endure, especially for conscious and thinking beings."
Lin Zhenzhen looked up at him with a dependent gaze: "General, do you feel lonely?"
Gu Bosheng smiled slightly, his eyes crinkling at the corners, but he didn't answer her question.
Lin Zhenzhen tugged at his sleeve, biting her lower lip, and said, "General, you don't know... what kind of life I lived before I met you."
Gu Bosheng paused, his hand still. "What's wrong?"
Lin Zhenzhen took a deep breath and began to reminisce about the distant past.
"One night more than a decade ago, mutated animals attacked the city where I lived."
"When I woke up, all my companions were gone, and only I, as a mutant, survived."
Gu Bosheng frowned slightly and said softly, "Does it hurt a lot?"
"It hurts a lot." Lin Zhenzhen sniffed, her eyes still filled with lingering fear.
"Watching helplessly as wild beasts devour their own and their companions' bodies, struggling desperately yet utterly powerless, is a fate worse than death."
"Later, I wandered outside the city for many years, and finally, with great effort, I entered the Western Theater with the refugees."
Lin Zhenzhen choked up and said, "I thought I could finally start a new life, but I never expected that this was just the beginning of another nightmare."
"Even from the first day I entered the city, all my canines were pulled out with tweezers."
"Even if my attack power is so weak that I can't even beat a non-mutated hunting dog."
“They are still afraid. Because of their fear, they choose to insult, beat, and bully. No one will accept me.”
As she spoke of these things, Lin Zhenzhen's body trembled involuntarily.
She seemed unable to suppress her feelings of grievance and sadness any longer, and large tears welled up in her eyes.
“I was once a human being, and I was once a victim.”
"I have never hurt anyone, so why is surviving a sin?"
"I keep thinking, would it have been better if I had just died quietly like everyone else that night?"
Gu Zhongsheng felt as if his heart was being tightly gripped by a hand, and a suffocating sense of frustration and intense pain swept over his internal organs.
Suppression had become a conditioned reflex for Gu Bosheng, etched into his bones and fused with his flesh and blood.
Gu Bosheng had to endure the physical pain caused by the genetic experiments and the urge to kill wantonly at all times.
Therefore, the direction of his evolved mental ability is: patience.
He relies on expending his mental abilities to ensure he appears to be a normal human being.
However, Gu Bosheng has now discovered that his superpowers are somewhat ineffective.
The slowly beating half of his heart had slipped out of his control, and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't suppress the anger and pain in his heart at that moment.
Gu Bosheng's body began to gradually turn into a zombie, with dark green rapidly spreading from his feet to his skin.
The golden pupils, which were originally as gentle as the afterglow of the sunset, transformed into crimson flames, rolling with scorching heat.
Lin Zhenzhen was completely unaware of all this.
She covered her face and threw herself into Gu Bosheng's arms.
"Thankfully, all of that is over now, because I met you."
Lin Zhenzhen buried her head in his chest: "General, thank you for taking me in."
Gu Bosheng's hand was suspended in mid-air, his fingertips already covered with long nails coated with deadly poison.
His murderous intent vanished completely, leaving only one thought in his mind.
Zombies are covered in poison, and it would be very dangerous for her to accidentally touch herself like this.
