Okay, see you tonight!
Lin Zhenzhen couldn't help but chuckle as she looked at those few short words.
Li Huiran caught a glimpse of the upward curve of her lips and couldn't help but lean her head closer.
You seem to be very happy today, is there something good happening?
"It's my birthday today." Lin Zhenzhen turned off her phone screen. "Let's have cake together tonight."
"Wow! That's great, there's cake!" Li Huiran clapped her hands happily. "Did you open the gift I gave you?"
"Not yet, let's dismantle them together tonight."
"Together? Are there any other people coming tonight?"
"Yes." Lin Zhenzhen nodded, her smile gentle. "And Gong Yao too."
"I knew it." Li Huiran suddenly realized, then gave him a look that said, "Don't try to fool me, I know everything."
Lin Zhenzhen smiled helplessly: "What do you know?"
"I knew he would come to celebrate your birthday!"
Lin Zhenzhen turned her head to look at her, her expression puzzled.
Li Huiran blinked: "I heard what you were saying in the stairwell two months ago."
Two months ago?
"It was the time before summer vacation, when it was our turn to do chores."
Li Huiran suddenly realized what was happening and quickly raised her right hand to add, "I promise you, I just happened to be passing by, and I absolutely did not mean to eavesdrop on your conversation."
Lin Zhenzhen smiled and said, "I know."
"But speaking of which, did Gong Yao say anything special back then? I've completely forgotten."
"Forgot?" Li Huiran stared wide-eyed in disbelief.
"Mmm." Lin Zhenzhen's expression was serious, and her beautiful brown eyes were filled with the words "I won't lie."
"Well... oh well! It's not important, you'll find out tonight anyway."
Li Huiran was even keeping her in suspense, which made Lin Zhenzhen even more curious.
Will they do something shocking or outrageous?
The time that followed passed very quickly.
On the first day of the senior year, all the teachers were determined to create a tense atmosphere.
The first two rounds of review have already ended. What remains is just the endless cycle of practicing problems.
Lin Zhenzhen solved problems very quickly, while the rest of the class were racking their brains over the last two challenging math problems.
After checking the entire test paper and spacing out for a while out of boredom, she secretly took out her phone from the drawer, opened a chat app, and started chatting with Gong Yao casually.
He was probably busy and didn't reply immediately.
Lin Zhenzhen slid her finger up and scrolled through their chat history in less than two minutes.
It's clear that the two don't usually contact each other by phone, and their conversations consist of very ordinary exchanges.
Lin Zhenzhen secretly breathed a sigh of relief. It seemed that "she" still had a sense of propriety and would not engage in early romance during the most crucial period of high school.
The bell rang, signaling the end of get out of class.
Li Huiran dragged her weak legs out of the classroom, her face ashen.
"This is terrifying. Is this what they call senior year of high school? It's only been one day, and it's already draining me dry. I can't even imagine how I'm going to get through the next year."
"Just live like this. Human potential is limitless. You'll get used to it eventually."
Lin Zhenzhen's words did not comfort Li Huiran; instead, they made her feel even more hopeless about the future.
“I’m different from you. You study so that you can go to your dream university and study the major you like. Because you have a strong inner drive, you feel that it’s all meaningful.”
Li Huiran lowered her head and whispered, "I'm just a lazy bum. I don't know what I want to do. I'm just being pushed forward by others."
"If I could, I would love to be a parasite without any guilt, eating and sleeping all day long."
Lin Zhenzhen stopped in her tracks, bent down, and looked intently into Li Huiran's eyes.
"Looks like you'll really have to eat a couple more pieces of cake later."
"Why?"
"You look so miserable, you should eat something sweet to balance it out."
Li Huiran stretched out her arm to hit Lin Zhenzhen: "You're so annoying."
Lin Zhenzhen nimbly dodged it, turned around, suppressed her smile, and said softly.
"There's no need to think so much. Maybe one day you'll realize that all of this is just like Zhuangzi's dream of a butterfly, or the reflection of flowers in water or the moon in a mirror—all nothingness."
So cherish the present moment, and cherish the people who are by your side now.
Li Huiran pounced on Lin Zhenzhen's back: "Tch, isn't it just about telling me to cherish you? How cheesy!"
The two joked and teased each other, and soon arrived at the teachers' dormitory building.
Lin Simiao went out to pick up the ordered cake. He gave the room key to Lin Zhenzhen in advance so she could go in directly.
"This place is so empty. I don't think Teacher Lin usually lives here."
"Hmm." Lin Zhenzhen took out a pair of pink slippers from the shoe cabinet next to her and handed them to Li Huiran, while she herself was only wearing a pair of white socks and stepped on the floor tiles.
"I only stay here overnight when I'm busy and don't have time to go home."
The teachers' dormitory is small, with a one-bedroom and one-living room design. The bedroom contains a simple cot, a desk, and a chair.
Several thick stacks of books were piled up on the table against the wall.
Li Huiran saw her name on the student roster on the table, circled in red and marked with a big exclamation mark.
She covered her face and wailed, "Waaah, all my grades are marked in red! I'm too ashamed to face Teacher Lin, how can I eat cake now!"
Lin Zhenzhen walked over and curiously flipped through the manual, only to unexpectedly discover Gong Yao's name.
