Chapter 47 People Abandoned by Educated Youth (8)

The Zhao family, mother and son, had just finished eating and were cleaning up the dishes when there was a knock at the door. The two quickly hid the meat and other food, wiped their mouths to make sure there were no clues, and then went out to open the door.

It was autumn, and it was already dark around 7 p.m. Although the weather was getting cooler, the lingering heat of late summer still lingered. Zhao Hongjun was wearing a t-shirt, and his bulging muscles exuded a strong sense of masculinity.

As soon as the door opened, this was the scene that Huang Siwen saw. She couldn't help but take two steps back, her face quietly turning red.

Zhao Hongjun scrutinized her closely and realized it was Huang Siwen. Her face was not good, and she spoke in a stern tone, "It's so late, does Huang Siwen have something to do? If not, you should go back quickly. If others see you, they will inevitably gossip."

After doing business with Wuyou for a long time, he gradually became more eloquent and was no longer the honest, simple, and easily bullied man he used to be.

"Gossip? Haven't I endured enough gossip lately?" Huang Siwen's face was rather unpleasant. She had indeed suffered quite a few blows recently, and she had lost a lot of weight.

"If you're here to say these useless things, then go back. I don't have time to listen to your nonsense." Zhao Hongjun moved his hand to close the door, but Huang Siwen stopped him firmly.

"Zhao Hongjun, I really have something to say to you. Can you please let me in?" Huang Siwen was anxious, her face showing obvious signs of exhaustion and panic.

Seeing this, Wuyou, who had been standing at the back, had a sudden thought. It was about time. "Let her in!"

Since Wuyou had spoken, Zhao Hongjun dared not refuse. With a cold face, he opened the door and let the person in. Fortunately, their house was in a remote location, and it was dark now, so probably no one saw them.

Wuyou casually picked up a stool and sat down in the yard. She looked at Huang Siwen, soaking soybeans in her hands, and said in a flat tone, "Huang, just say what you have to say. There's no need to beat around the bush."

"Aunt Zhao, I was wrong about what happened before. I shouldn't have blamed Brother Hongjun. He saved me, and I should thank him. It was my fault, I was wrong. Please forgive me." Huang Siwen's face was pale, her legs went weak, and she sat down on the ground, sobbing. Her cries sounded particularly eerie in the night wind.

Even Wuyou hadn't expected the other person to be so fragile. She couldn't help but look at her son and saw a hint of reluctance flash across his face. She reached out and helped Huang Siwen sit up to the side, her tone softening slightly.

"Since you know you're wrong, we won't hold it against you." These words came out as if from a kind and benevolent elder, a stark contrast to his previous confrontation with Huang Siwen.

Huang Siwen was even prepared to be humiliated, but she didn't expect Wuyou to be so reasonable, and she stopped crying.

"I..." What she was about to say was indeed difficult to bring up. Huang Siwen bit her lip and said, "I was wrong before. I take back what I said. I wonder if Brother Hongjun would still be willing to marry me?"

She had received a definite answer: it was very difficult for educated youth to return to the city. Her repeated attempts to persuade them had exhausted her family's patience. Even if she did go back, she feared there would be no place for her in their home anymore.

She originally wanted to find Zhao Fang, since he was the best catch in the whole village. But he was unwilling, and other suitors kept their distance from her because of the incident when she fell into the water. Only then did she realize how wrong she had been.

They'll either have to marry one of the village's widowers or hooligans, or marry Zhao Hongjun, because no decent family in the village would marry her except Zhao Hongjun.

Before, she would never have bowed her head, even if it meant death. But reality always teaches her a lesson. She couldn't die, so she could only endure the pain and torment, lower her proud head, and apologize.

Upon hearing this, Zhao Hongjun wasn't as happy as he had imagined. Ultimately, his attraction to Huang Siwen was merely based on her good looks.

Now that he's with Wuyou, he's met more people and experienced more things, broadening his horizons and knowledge. His good looks no longer hold as much appeal for him.

Catching his adopted son's gaze, Wuyou smiled. All his efforts these past few days had finally paid off; the child had improved. He believed the original owner would be very happy if he knew.

“Huang Zhiqing, you’ve always been determined to return to the city, why did you suddenly change your mind? Could it be that you’re thinking of our family now that you know how difficult it was to return to the city before?” Wuyou’s words hit the nail on the head, instantly tearing open Huang Siwen’s deepest fears.

"I... I didn't—" Huang Siwen panicked under Wuyou's all-seeing eyes, denying it loudly as if this would bolster her confidence.

"Becoming my wife isn't that easy. Huang Zhiqing, you should go back first!" Wuyou said, then gestured for Zhao Hongjun to take her back. It was so dark, and it was a bit dangerous for a young woman to walk alone on the road.

Huang Siwen wanted to say something more, but Zhao Hongjun asked her to leave. Looking at the tall, silent man beside her, Huang Siwen bit her lip and stopped in her tracks.

"Brother Hongjun, I... I promise I'll be a good wife, please help me out. I'm pretty, it'll make you proud to take me out!" Huang Siwen deeply regretted that she had gone too far back then, to the point that her apology was useless.

At this moment, she placed all her hopes on Zhao Hongjun. She had always known that this man had feelings for her, but she just didn't care. After all, there were so many men in the village, and none of them were as good as Zhao Hongjun, so she naturally didn't fancy them.

Ironically, the person she despised the most has now become her only lifeline.
