In the cramped room, a low table was placed in the center, with two chairs on either side, and a sign behind them that read "Confess and you will be treated leniently; resist and you will be punished severely" was particularly eye-catching.
Wuyou placed his hands clasped on the table. In front of him stood Zhou Zheng, the stern-faced captain. Zhou Zheng's left arm was draped over the back of his chair, his right hand on the table, and he leaned forward, gradually approaching Wuyou. The close proximity created a great sense of oppression.
“Li Wuyou, your wife has testified that you were not with her on the night of the incident, and that you returned home late at night. We all believe you did not commit the murder, but you must cooperate with us. As a fellow police officer, you should know as much as we do.” Zhou Zheng stared intently into Wuyou’s eyes, trying to discern any clues from his gaze and micro-expressions.
Public matters are public, and private matters are private; Zhou Zheng has always kept these distinctions very clearly. Those in their line of work cannot let personal feelings get involved.
"How is this possible?" Wuyou's eyes widened, his constricted pupils revealing his shock; he looked utterly terrified. Zhou Zheng even thought that if Wuyou was acting, this person was truly terrifying.
“That’s exactly what Zhang Wenxiu said,” Zhou Zhen confirmed to Wuyou.
"Why would he do that?" Wuyou lowered her head, almost to her chest, her fingers curling and trembling slightly.
Then she suddenly looked up, staring intently at Zhou Zheng, "Captain, I demand to see Zhang Wenxiu. I want her to speak to me in person."
A faint flame seemed to burn in Wuyou's eyes, persistent, stubborn, and expectant, yet complicated by a hint of despair, complex and hard to describe.
For a moment, Zhou Zheng was stunned by Wuyou's gaze. He vaguely felt that what he had said had dealt a great blow to Wuyou, leaving him in a precarious state, ready to fall into the abyss with the slightest touch.
Zhou Zheng shook his head, dismissing the thought. Then he resumed his usual investigative mode, "This isn't in accordance with the rules, but... okay!"
Half an hour later, Zhang Wenxiu, dressed in bright colors, sat in the police station's interrogation room again. This time, she was no longer facing the serious, sharp, and tense Zhou Zheng, but her husband, whom she had always looked down upon.
"Wenxiu, how have you been these past few days?" Wuyou clasped her hands together, her face full of anxiety, staring intently at Zhang Wenxiu's chubby face, her eyes still full of affection.
Zhou Zheng and the others, hiding behind the one-way glass, were speechless. Looking at Zhang Wenxiu's chubby face, they couldn't find any beauty in it whatsoever, and didn't even want to look at her again. Wuyou, what a good comrade!
Everyone couldn't help but think that he was still deeply in love and unwavering in the face he faced every day, truly deserving to be called a good man of the new century.
For some reason, when faced with Wuyou's affectionate face, Zhang Wenxiu always couldn't help but reveal her true nature, her arrogance written all over her face, though it was unclear where her sense of superiority came from.
"That's fine. Tell me what you need to say as soon as possible, I'm busy right now."
Wuyou's fingers tightened slightly as she looked up into Zhang Wenxiu's eyes, as if trying to see into the depths of her soul through those windows. "Wenxiu, we were clearly together that night, why did you tell the captain and the others..."
Zhang Wenxiu's eyes darted around, a moment of panic crossing her face. Then she clenched her fists, gritted her teeth, and said, "I don't know what you're talking about. You did come back around two or three in the morning that night. Although we are husband and wife, I will not abandon justice and fairness for the sake of feelings. If you really killed someone, I advise you to confess as soon as possible, so as not to implicate my son and me."
"Do you really think I'm the murderer and want me to confess?" Wuyou blinked, her eyes slightly moist, her voice so soft it seemed to dissipate with a gust of wind.
"Yes, I know you love me, but you can't kill someone for me. I've explained to you that my relationship with Mr. Sun is in the past. Why would you risk going to the Sun family to kill someone and harm the innocent Mrs. Sun? I'm so disappointed in you."
At this point, Zhang Wenxiu couldn't help but shake her head, looking extremely disappointed, which was quite an unusual display of second-rate acting skills.
His fist clenched so tightly it seemed to annihilate his flesh and blood. Only pain could keep his consciousness from collapsing. His eyes were wide open, bloodshot. At this moment, Wuyou was like a bomb about to explode. He suddenly stood up.
A loud crash echoed through the small room as a small table was violently overturned, rolling around on the floor and landing in a corner. Zhang Wenxiu and Zhou Zheng, who were watching from outside, were utterly astonished. After all, Li Wuyou was always a kind-hearted man; anger shouldn't have been a thing of the sort for him.
"What are you doing? Are you angry because you're ashamed? Since you dared to kill someone, don't deny it. Instead, take it out on a weak woman like me. What kind of man are you?" Zhang Wenxiu was also furious. After all, Wuyou had always been a docile little lamb in front of her. Suddenly, he had turned into a big bad wolf and wanted to bite her. She couldn't tolerate it.
Since the outbreak, Wuyou has been standing still, her head slightly lowered, her slightly long short hair obscuring her eyes. All that can be seen is her tightly bitten lip, her whole body trembling slightly, and her fists clenched tightly.
Upon hearing Zhang Wenxiu's words, she seemed like a robot that had been switched on, slowly raising her head, her eyes never leaving the woman she deeply loved.
"Why? I consider myself a good husband and a good father. You betrayed our marriage, and now you want to take away my innocence and my life? What did I do wrong?"
She opened her mouth, revealing gleaming white teeth stained with a striking crimson. At first, her voice was low, but towards the end it was almost a shout, as if she had used all her strength.
A somber, gloomy, and despairing atmosphere emanated from this not-so-tall man, instantly infecting the entire room. Even Zhang Wenxiu was speechless for a moment, while Zhou Zheng and the others were dumbfounded.
"You... what nonsense are you talking about? How could I betray you and take your life? Is that... is that the kind of person you think I am?" Coming to her senses, Zhang Wenxiu vehemently denied it. Her hands clenched and unclenched uncontrollably, her evasive eyes revealing her unease.
After hearing Zhang Wenxiu's words, Wuyou simply stared at her face, as if using her eyes and soul to meticulously trace the woman's features, before she gave a bitter smile.
“I have evidence…I have evidence—do you think I don’t know what you did? I just…I just don’t want to believe it.” Then Wuyou covered her face, tears sliding down her fingers and leaving puddles on the ground.
"You..." Zhang Wenxiu was about to speak when the people outside immediately opened the door and separated the two. As she was being led away, Zhang Wenxiu saw Wuyou's sorrowful eyes and the strange smile on his lips. Her heart skipped a beat, and her whole body went cold.
