The room was dark.
The room was damp and had a strange, earthy smell.
Song Wan'er trembled all over, shrinking into the quilt, her face pale and terrified.
She trembled nervously under the covers, her eyes filled with terror, as if the slightest noise outside would make her jump.
She involuntarily looked down at her hands, which were covered in burns, and let out a sob, as if she could still hear the mocking and contemptuous looks and laughter of the maids and old women outside.
She hadn't eaten all day. As a mere concubine, who would care that she hadn't eaten? But she had no time to be angry. She just nervously listened to the sounds outside. When she heard the slow approaching footsteps, her eyes widened in fear, and she tried to curl up under the covers.
The door creaked open, and the bitter smell of medicinal soup wafted in.
Song Wan'er wished she could shrink into the bed, but just as she was struggling, a slender hand gripped her shoulder.
She was startled, knowing she couldn't remain inactive any longer. Trembling, she turned her head and saw a handsome, fair-skinned young man.
He was handsome and refined, with fair and clean skin. He was born into a noble family and was known for his elegant and charming character.
But the gloomy look on that face made Song Wan'er feel a chill run through her body.
"It's time to drink your medicine." He gracefully held the bowl of steaming, dark-colored medicine in his hand and smiled at Song Wan'er.
But in Song Wan'er's eyes, that smile was more terrifying than a vengeful ghost.
Tears streamed down her face. She had long forgotten how the beautiful, passionate young girl used to cry, her face streaked with tears. She rushed over and tightly grasped the hand of the young man, whose expression was slowly fading, crying out, "Young master! Young master, spare me! For the sake of..." She hurriedly gathered her disheveled hair and looked at Zhang Yourong anxiously, sobbing, "For the sake of our past relationship!" She had married the man she had so carefully planned to marry, but she felt like she had fallen into hell.
"Affection?" The young man in brocade chuckled, pinched her pointed chin, his eyes dangerous and resentful, but his voice was very gentle and tender as he said, "It's for Wan'er's health that I made you drink the medicine."
“Young Master…” Song Wan’er was almost crying, but one of her hands was grabbed by the young man and he grabbed the scalding hot medicine bowl. Before she could react, her mouth was pried open and the gentle-smiling young man poured the scalding hot medicine down her throat.
After the scalding hot medicine was taken, she lay on the bed, her throat numb from the heat, unable to speak. The young man, however, seemed to smile with satisfaction, grabbing her hair without any pity and pulling it forcefully, saying, "Take your medicine properly and give me a son or daughter, so that our love will not have been in vain!"
One man and one woman?
Song Wan'er almost burst into tears.
Ever since they were caught by Prime Minister Song in the woodshed a few years ago, Zhang Yourong has been unable to have sex. She has not been intimate with him for many years. When will she be able to have children?
It is unclear when exactly, but rumors of Zhang Yourong's impotence have been circulating in the capital. The fact that she, as Zhang Yourong's beloved daughter, cannot conceive only adds insult to injury to these rumors.
Not only would no family in the capital dare to give their daughter to Zhang Yourong as their principal wife, but Zhang Yourong's future was also ruined by this scandal. Although she got the marriage she had always dreamed of and successfully became the only woman by Zhang Yourong's side, with no other woman able to compete with her for Zhang Yourong's affections, she had destroyed Zhang Yourong's reputation and career. Who in this household didn't hate her?
She was just a helpless, childless concubine with no money to rely on. Neither the old lady nor Zhang Yourong treated her like a human being, and the servants treated her with utter contempt.
Thinking of this, Song Wan'er couldn't help but burst into tears.
For some reason, she always felt that her fate shouldn't have been this way.
She should have lived a glamorous life, with a loving partner, and been happier than anyone else.
She was convulsing in bed. Over the years, she had neglected her health and had been tormented by Zhang Yourong to the point that she was nothing but skin and bones, and had long lost her former beauty and grace.
Zhang Yourong seemed to think she was slovenly and ugly. Seeing her completely submerged in the medicinal soup and the dark, strangely smelling quilt, he snorted in disgust, vigorously wiped his fingers clean with a handkerchief, as if his once deeply devoted lover was the dirtiest person in the world. He staggered away, not giving Song Wan'er another second glance.
He went to take his medicine.
But after all these years, it seems there's still no improvement.
Song Wan'er let out a wail and, after he left, struggled to get off the bed.
She knew that if she didn't call for help soon, she would probably die at Zhang Yourong's hands.
But who can we ask for help?
After retiring, Prime Minister Song left the capital. It is said that he encountered bandits and died along with Consort Rou, whose bodies were chopped up.
She crawled nervously on the ground for a long time before her eyes finally lit up.
There's another person...she...
She was still considered a mistress, so she secretly smiled and flattered a bold old woman in the courtyard, giving her two heavy gold bracelets. The old woman, greedy for money, finally agreed to let her out. She waited until the masters in the Marquis's mansion were too busy to care about her, and then escaped from the mansion wearing a tattered dress.
She still remembered where Song Lan had married the Prince of Wei, and headed straight for the Prince of Wei's mansion, her eyes filled with a desperate madness, perhaps even a willingness to perish together with him!
Song Lan is living such a happy life, so as her older sister, she should naturally help her younger sister out!
