Even Shen Wangshu, who was observing from the sidelines, felt that Emperor Hui had been severely humiliated.
The jade that Emperor Hui treasured and gave to his true love and the imperial concubine turned out to be the one that the regent had rejected. How could Emperor Hui bear this?
He still lost face in front of the concubines in his own harem.
"Bring it over here so I can see it." This was the Regent's thoughtful gift to her, and Shen Wangshu felt incredibly sweet inside. It must be that his feelings were completely different from Emperor Hui's.
She stretched out her long, slender, white fingers, leaned forward, and touched the jade statue in front of her with a smile. It was indeed much more exquisite, and its color was more translucent and lustrous. With a hint of appreciation in her eyes, she said, "It is indeed a fine piece." The jade was slightly cool to the touch. She touched it with satisfaction, then ordered the eunuchs beside her to place one of the statues in her palace, in a place where she could see it at a glance. Only then did she reward a few eunuchs and dismiss them.
Seeing that Emperor Hui was still swaying precariously but refusing to fall, the eunuchs hesitated for a moment but still dared not move.
Emperor Hui was, after all, an emperor. Although he was severely suppressed by the regent, he hadn't reached the point where even his servants didn't respect him.
"He, he..." It took Emperor Hui a long time to barely suppress the blood in his heart. He turned around and looked angrily at the Consort above him, who showed no intention of comforting him at all.
The woman was dressed beautifully today, with stunning looks, but for some reason, Emperor Hui felt a sense of loss and anger at her indifference towards him.
In the past, she would have rushed over to comfort her and joined him in cursing the regent.
"These are all the Regent's wishes, and I like them quite a bit too."
"He is humiliating me!" Emperor Hui's handsome face twisted like a demon as he roared at Shen Wangshu.
He almost spat in his own face. Shen Wangshu dodged back in disgust, then thought for a moment and said nonchalantly, "This isn't the first time Your Majesty has been humiliated. Are you still not used to it?"
"What?!"
“If Your Majesty is truly displeased, go and question the Regent. There’s nothing I can do about it,” Shen Wangshu paused, seeing Emperor Hui looking at her with hatred, and slowly said with a shrug, “Even Consort He was slapped by the Regent today. I’m a coward, and this was the Regent’s gift. Since he gave me something good, I naturally won’t scold him, will I?” Her smiling, charming eyes, as clear as autumn water, quietly fell on the statue, completely focused.
Emperor Hui was taken aback by her words, and then his expression suddenly changed.
He remembered more the slap he gave Consort He than the slap he received from the Regent.
"He doesn't dislike you, so why would he send you gifts?!" he questioned.
"The Regent is a man of great wisdom, how could he possibly hold a grudge against my minor offense? I do not understand what Your Majesty means." Knowing full well that the Regent disliked the Consort, yet still allowing her to run wild and act recklessly in front of him, Emperor Hui was utterly detestable to Shen Wangshu.
Too lazy to deal with Emperor Hui, she called out for someone to come in. After hesitating for a moment, she sent someone to personally thank the Regent. Seeing that dinner had already been served, she looked up at Emperor Hui, seemingly intending to see him out. However, Emperor Hui seemed not to understand her meaning and sat down beside her resentfully.
He was happy to eat here, which Shen Wangshu was more than pleased with, so he smiled.
Her smile was dazzling, and Emperor Hui's eyes flickered before he lowered his voice and said, "He hit Consort He, which reminded me of the day he hit you, and that's why I was so furious."
Seeing Shen Wangshu's nonchalant attitude, and recalling the Regent's apparent special regard for her, he was filled with doubt, but he remained confident in the Consort's feelings for him. He glanced at her and sighed softly, saying, "Although Consort He is insignificant, she is still one of my concubines. He has repeatedly attacked my harem; I'm afraid I am now merely..."
He couldn't help but burst into tears as he spoke.
"Oh." Shen Wangshu was no longer listening to any of this and had already ordered someone to serve her food.
Emperor Hui cried for a long time, but no one came to comfort him, so he couldn't cry anymore.
"I……"
"Do you want some meat?" Shen Wangshu picked up a piece of meat from a soup bowl and placed it in Emperor Hui's bowl.
She seemed much more aloof, but she still cared about her health and preferences, and for a moment, Emperor Hui felt a surge of joy.
When he saw the imperial concubine's beautiful eyes sweep over him, his heart fluttered, and he hurriedly ate the meat, finding it incredibly delicious.
"Eat more if you like it." Shen Wangshu put a few more pieces on his plate. Seeing that he ate them with satisfaction, his little face flushed as if he was enjoying himself, she sneered inwardly, but only lowered her head and ate the little bit of light food in her bowl.
She ate with her head down and didn't talk to anyone. Emperor Hui tried to talk to her several times, but she refused each time because of her coldness. For a while, apart from the beautiful palace maids serving the food, no one in the palace spoke. But this silence didn't last long. Then, steady footsteps were heard from outside the palace. Afterward, a tall and handsome young man walked in.
When Shen Wangshu saw him, her eyes lit up slightly.
"Why are you here?" Emperor Hui looked up and saw the Regent, and immediately put down his chopsticks in displeasure.
He had just been humiliated by the Regent, so naturally he was in a bad mood when he saw him.
"I have come to see Your Majesty. I heard that Your Majesty is in the Consort's palace, so I came here." The Regent's cold eyes swept over the distance between Shen Wangshu and Emperor Hui, with a hint of satisfaction. Without waiting for Emperor Hui to greet him, he sat down above Shen Wangshu and said indifferently, "I have not yet eaten. Let us eat together here."
