She opened it with a whoosh, her expressionless face blank, and the light from the crystal cores almost stung Shen Wangshu's eyes. The backpack was overflowing with crystal cores, an astonishing number. But Nan Lan seemed unmoved, tossing the backpack to Shen Wangshu.
"There's one more copy. I gave it to Atu to absorb. These are for you." She raised her chin, and seeing Shen Wangshu nod, she slowly asked, "Do you like what you see?"
Shen Wangshu nodded with a very complicated expression.
"My boss and I went to the city again recently." This was a solo operation, so Ah Guang took a bite of his steamed bun with a reserved air, subtly showing off before smiling and saying, "My boss and I teamed up to wipe out a group of zombies. My boss's fire-type ability is very useful."
His light-based ability disintegrated almost all the zombies. To his relief, the crystal cores seemed to be hard enough; after the zombies were dissolved by his light-based ability, the crystal cores remained in place. Although a few powerful high-level zombies appeared, Nan Lan then added two more fireballs, and nothing was left.
The simple and successful elimination of the large number of zombies filled Ah Guang with confidence.
He finally realized that he wasn't a good-for-nothing anymore.
“If it weren’t for the crystal core given to me by Miss Ning, I wouldn’t have advanced. From now on, I will protect you diligently,” he said earnestly to Shen Wangshu.
If the boy hadn't kept glancing at Nan Lan's attitude, Shen Wangshu felt she would still be willing to believe in his sincerity. She chuckled, didn't stand on ceremony with Nan Lan, zipped up the backpack, and put it on Ah Xuan's back.
Although she didn't know the full extent of Nan Lan and A Guang's power, the fact that they could collect so many crystal cores from outside already demonstrated their strength. Since they were so powerful, they probably wouldn't care much about these crystal cores, so why shouldn't Shen Wangshu take them? Returning what you borrow is the only proper thing to do.
“We’ve brought back another batch of supplies. We don’t need that much, so let’s divide it up,” Nan Lan said calmly.
“You children will be blessed in the future,” Ning’s mother said gently, showing no reluctance at having to share the food.
"You two don't need to go out. Rou Rou and I will go." Kindness alone is not enough in this apocalypse.
Although Nan Lan was willing to offer some help to the survivors, she didn't want Ning's parents to truly confront these survivors with their varying mindsets and predicaments. She and Shen Wangshu exchanged a glance, nodded slightly, and together reassured Ning's parents before dragging out more than ten bags from a corner of the living room. Seeing that the bags mostly contained biscuits, bread, and pastries, Shen Wangshu hesitated for a moment before asking Nan Lan, "Should we give them some rice?"
"The water and electricity are cut off, giving them to us won't help," Nan Lan said, frowning.
Chaos broke out as soon as the water and power were cut off in the villa area.
Water and electricity are essential for the survivors' lives, representing their last resort. After the power and water were cut off, some people broke down, while others harbored malicious intentions.
The earthen walls of the Ning family villa were so conspicuous that some reckless people actually tried to rush into the villa.
Such a grand display and such tight security clearly indicate that there are still supplies available.
Nan Lan said nothing, nor did she give any further thought. She raised her hand and fired a shot, blowing the head off the survivor who was excitedly trying to climb in. Only then did no one dare to show their face again.
"Someone's coming?" Shen Wangshu stopped examining the supplies, threw the few pieces of bench he was holding on the ground, walked around the supplies twice before frowning and saying, "Then why are we still sending them supplies? To repay evil with kindness?"
She was willing to help the survivors, but only if they didn't harbor any ill intentions towards her; otherwise, it wouldn't be saintly, it would be sheer stupidity. Seeing Nan Lan smile at her, she said unhappily, "I'm not heartless, but I don't want the bad guys to get away with it." Her expression turned serious.
"I know." Nan Lan paused, her expression turning serious as she stopped smiling.
“Those kids ran fast, I kept an eye on them. Later they contacted a few more families, some didn’t participate, and some wanted to fight them.” Nan Lan said coldly, “A-Guang and I arrested them all and had A-Tu block them off on the other side of the villa area by the earthen wall. Since they like robbing others so much, let them rob each other.” She wasn’t showing mercy and sparing their lives, but rather wanted to see if this group would turn on each other when they were starving, cold, and without supplies.
It's only interesting to watch when they fight amongst themselves.
Shen Wangshu listened to Nan Lan's decision and nodded in satisfaction.
“The remaining villas in the area are all very honest and haven’t responded. My uncle also said that he would help out as long as we’ve been neighbors for many years.” Nan Lan looked back at Ning’s father.
Ning's father's eyes were glued to the broken pieces of a bench on the ground at Shen Wangshu's feet.
"This is the bench that Emperor Xuanzong of Tang once used!" Ning's father pointed to the fragments, then to the innocent-looking Shen Wangshu, and screamed and fainted to the ground.
Shen Wangshu and Nan Lan's lips twitched simultaneously.
"Then let's share some." Shen Wangshu saw Ning's father slowly wake up, then threw himself onto Emperor Tang Minghuang's bench, tears streaming down his face. He covered the throbbing veins at the corners of his eyes and mumbled something.
Nan Lan didn't even look at Ning's father's face, which was filled with blood and tears, and quickly walked away with her bag.
Shen Wangshu and Nan Lan delivered food to the survivors in the villa area. There wasn't much food, just enough for a family of three for a week. Shen Wangshu didn't want to be taken advantage of, and she couldn't save everyone.
She and Nan Lan repeatedly explained to the survivors the weaknesses of the zombies outside, how to fight them, how to escape, and some taboos when facing zombies, such as not getting bitten. She also told the survivors about the uses of the crystal cores in the zombies' heads and how to make simple weapons themselves.
She hopes the survivors can become stronger on their own.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
She received many thanks and felt very satisfied and happy.
In these end times, it is not wise to simply protect oneself.
She busied herself teaching the survivors how to improve their skills for two days, while Ah-Guang set up a radio station at home.
Amidst the ripping sounds, a message arrived.
Several survivor safety bases have been built one after another, calling on all survivors in the vicinity to go to the nearest base for comprehensive protection.
Shen Wangshu's gaze couldn't help but fall on Ah Xuan, who was tapping on the radio.
"Let's go too," she said softly.
How could she be so selfish, ignoring the safety of her parents and friends for the sake of her own love?
