Qiao Zhen raised her hand and slapped Chu Chu hard. The impact of her hand against Chu Chu's flesh made a dull "thud," and a hissing sound followed.
She winced and gasped for breath, then shook her hand to ease the pain. "Does it hurt?"
Chu Chu: [It felt like I was just lightly touched.]
Qiao Zhen: [I didn't expect this little pony you've joined to be so tough. I think you can completely replace me and become the tank to absorb damage for the mission target.]
Chu Chu: [That's right, that's right (*σ′?`)σ I'm not only a master at gathering information now, but also an intelligent shield. Zhen Zhen, aren't you worried that an unknown external attack might affect the entire mission?]
Qiao Zhen: [Don't worry, even if the sky falls, the God Taibai will hold it up. Besides, there are only a few easy tasks. If you don't enjoy this leisurely time now, you'll regret it later.]
When Madam Ge entered Qiao Zhen's courtyard, she saw her patting the foal with her hand, making a muffled "thump" sound. What well-educated woman would make such a rude gesture? She looked down on Qiao Zhen from the bottom of her heart.
But Qiao Zhen was carrying Madam Ge's precious grandson, and no matter how much Madam Ge looked down on Qiao Zhen, she couldn't let her fend for herself in the courtyard. "Doesn't your hand hurt?"
Upon hearing Madam Ge's voice, Qiao Zhen immediately stood up, supporting her large pregnant belly. Half a year had passed since Pan Zhao left, and Qiao Zhen's belly was quite large and taut. "Madam," she said, "this horse has thick hide; I was just patting it casually, the sound just seemed heavy."
Madam Ge was still worried about Qiao Zhen. She had originally wanted to send a maid or old woman to serve her personally, but she suddenly changed her mind. "The general is rarely back, and your husband is with the general. Why don't you move to my courtyard? That way, we can talk more often. Besides, it would be dangerous for a pregnant woman like you to live alone in this courtyard. When your belly gets bigger, you'll have difficulty moving around."
Qiao Zhen didn't need to worry about Madam Ge's concern for her, after all, she was carrying Madam Ge's grandson or granddaughter in her belly, and she also needed to be taken care of, so she said directly, "Then this humble woman will humbly accept your offer."
So Qiao Zhen moved to Madam Ge's courtyard, where she spent her days tending to flowers and plants, or embroidering little clothes and shoes for her unborn child.
Madam Ge fed Qiao Zhen all the tonics from the Ge family as if they were free. During the day, she had maids and servants watch over her, and at night, maids would keep watch over her. She was no longer treated like a seamstress; she was practically the little ancestor of the Ge family.
Qiao Zhen is carrying the grandson or granddaughter of General Ge and Madam Ge, wouldn't that be an ancestor?
That day, as Qiao Zhen and Madam Ge were embroidering on a soft couch, a maid brought two letters: one from General Ge to Madam Ge, and the other from Pan Zhao to Qiao Zhen.
Pan Zhao drew the picture for Qiao with ink, a thick stack of paper. I don't know how long that big oaf spent drawing that thick stack of paper.
Qiao Zhen looked at the pictures, her eyes crinkling with laughter, and occasionally a soft chuckle would escape her lips.
Seeing Qiao Zhen so happy, Madam Ge asked, "What did Pan Zhao write to you?"
Qiao Zhen handed all the drawings she had seen to Madam Ge, saying, "My husband has drawn many drawings for me."
Mrs. Ge frowned as she looked at the painting. "What is this painting? I don't understand it."
“My husband’s hands are used to holding axes, guns and swords; he’s not very good at using a pen.” Qiao Zhen began to explain to Madam Ge from the beginning. She picked up the first drawing and pointed to the little figure outlined with cold, hard lines. “This is from when they were camping along the way. Someone secretly caught a wild rabbit and roasted it to eat, and he followed them to catch some chickens and rabbits in the wild.”
“And this one.” Qiao Zhen picked up another drawing. It showed a little person lying on a wooden board with a few bubbles on the little person’s nose. “This is someone who lives in the same tent as him snoring.”
Mrs. Ge picked up a drawing. She looked at the outline drawn with a few strokes, with a few lines in ink on the outline, and a dark blob drawn with dots inside the outline, which she didn't know what it was. "And what about this one?" she asked.
Qiao Zhen took the paper, glanced at it, and said, "This is them attacking a city. These black frames are the city walls, and the groups below are the troops." She pointed to a circle "O" in the black dots, "This is my husband."
Mrs. Goh looked at the blueprints, her eyes filled with sadness again. "So good, so good."
Her voice was so soft, as if a gust of wind could blow it away.
From that day on, Madam Ge treated Qiao Zhen even better, but all of this kindness was based on the fact that Qiao Zhen was pregnant.
Days passed by one by one, and before they knew it, Qiao Zhen was nine and a half months pregnant. The midwife and delivery room were ready.
But the expectation that Madam Ge naturally showed when she looked at Qiao Zhen's belly made Qiao Zhen a little scared. Qiao Zhen tentatively said, "Madam, I once heard someone tell a heartbreaking story in six words."
Mrs. Goe asked, "What story?"
"Save the mother or the child? Save the child."
Mrs. Goe was completely confused. She asked, "What does that mean?"
Qiao Zhen just smiled and shook her head. "It's nothing, I was just overthinking. I hope Madam Ge will never understand this story."
For the first time, Madam Ge opened her heart to Qiao Zhen, saying, "What heartbreaking things haven't I experienced? I used to have a child with the general, but we were betrayed by villains and are now living in exile, their fate unknown."
Qiao Zhen lowered her gaze. "I'm sorry, Madam, I shouldn't have brought these things up."
It was a stormy night. Qiao Zhen and Mrs. Ge were having dinner together when Qiao Zhen suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach. Her hand slipped, and the bowl she was holding fell to the ground and shattered. "I... I think I'm going into labor."
