Qiao Zhen returned to the neighborhood where she used to live with Xu Li, where she also owned a villa. She returned quietly, just as she had left quietly before. And she needed to create an opportunity to encounter Xu Li, whether it was a romantic glance or a heroic rescue.
But... nine times out of ten, things in life don't go as planned.
As Yu Peng drove out, he saw Qiao Zhen pulling a suitcase. "Brother Xu, there's a beautiful woman over there. I don't think I've ever seen her in the neighborhood before, but she looks familiar."
Sitting in the passenger seat, Guan Shan tugged at Yu Peng's arm and leaned in to look around, saying, "Where? Where? I want to see too."
Xu Li, sitting in the back row, didn't say anything. He was extremely tired and rubbed his temples with his index finger.
Xu Li is now a lieutenant general because he has been doing missions like he doesn't care about his life for the past year and a half, going wherever there is danger.
Guan Shan looked at Qiao Zhen, who was dragging her suitcase, with surprise and delight. "Wow, she's really beautiful! And not just one of those internet celebrity faces, she's truly stunning!"
Yu Peng and Guan Shan Leng argued over the angle of view, and the car seemed to crash into Qiao Zhen out of control.
Fortunately, Qiao Zhen reacted quickly, dodging the attack and throwing her suitcase in front of the car wheel.
Qiao Zhen didn't see who was in the car. She slammed her fingers against the driver's side window and yelled angrily, "Get out!"
Yu Peng and Guan Shan exchanged glances, both turning their gazes toward Xu Li.
Xu Li said indifferently, "Go and take care of it. Don't bother me if you can solve it with money."
Yu Peng reluctantly opened the car door and got out. "Miss, I'm sorry, my brother is a bit mischievous."
Qiao Zhen immediately launched into a tirade: "Isn't the next line 'He's still a child, I absolutely cannot let him get away with this?'" She walked around the front of the car to the passenger side and started banging on the window.
Guan Shanleng also reluctantly rolled down the car window, pressing his face against it. "Miss, please don't believe him. He was just distracted by how beautiful you are and accidentally bumped into you. Now he's shamelessly trying to pin the blame on me. He's clearly an irresponsible man!"
Yu Peng glared angrily at Guan Shan, "If you hadn't insisted on leaning on my arm to look at pretty girls, would I have bumped into them?!"
Qiao Zhen pressed Guan Shan's cold head back down and stuck her head into the window. "Those behind you must be your parents, right?"
Xu Li opened his eyes and looked up; their eyes met.
...The atmosphere became very awkward.
Qiao Zhen pulled her head back. "Ahem, well, I'm a nice person, I won't hold it against you."
She grabbed the handle of her suitcase and left.
Qiao Zhen was also impressed with herself. She was running as if she were escaping for her life, her eight-centimeter high heels clicking loudly.
After realizing that the woman was Qiao Zhen, Xu Li paused for a moment before pushing open the car door, getting out, and chasing after her.
In her panic, Qiao Zhen kicked off her high heels, but the pain in her feet instantly brought her back to her senses when she stepped onto the pebbly path. Why was she running? Why was she feeling guilty? Even in a battle, one shouldn't lose face, no matter how weak one is.
So she straightened her back, turned around to pick up her high heels, and continued running away with her head held high.
Xu Li only saw Qiao Zhen's back as she turned around, and by the time he chased after her, Qiao Zhen was already gone.
Qiao Zhen skipped across the gravel path and landed headfirst on the back of the man in the suit. "I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry."
She hurriedly apologized and then slipped away.
Fan Zhou watched the woman leave in a panic, not recognizing her as Qiao Zhen. He looked behind him, but the place was empty; there was no one there, and no vicious dog was chasing her.
Xu Li went to the security room to check where Qiao Zhen had gone. He watched Qiao Zhen running barefoot on the gravel road, and he felt both angry and amused, as well as heartbroken and sad.
After leaving the residential complex, Qiao Zhen could only buy a well-equipped 100-square-meter apartment at the sales office. The paperwork was completed intermittently over the course of a week, and she finally moved out of the hotel and into her new "doghouse".
That day, Qiao Zhen went to a self-service barbecue restaurant dressed casually. A little boy at the next table saw her and pointed at her, saying, "Nabu! Nabu!"
The child's parent pulled the child's hand back, then looked at Qiao Zhen, "Ah! It's Qiao Zhen!"
Qiao Zhen turned to look at the children, waved, and greeted them with her greasy mouth, "Hello."
The little boy ran to Qiao Zhen's side, "Hello, Nabu. That's great, you're still alive! Don't be afraid, I'll help you beat up that bad guy, Mao Fei!"
Qiao Zhen looked at the child and the child's parents in surprise, "How come there are still children who remember a TV series from two years ago?"
The child's mother explained, "The Legend of Concubine Mao has been very popular in the past two years because of its tight and fast-paced plot. It is broadcast every holiday. You also won the Golden Award for Best Supporting Actress for your role as Nabu, but unfortunately you retired from the entertainment industry and did not go to accept it."
"You are so beautiful in person, even more so than two years ago. You and Mr. Xu must be very happy."
Qiao Zhen slowed down her chewing of the grilled meat. "We've divided it up."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to bring this up," the child's mother said, somewhat embarrassed.
Xu Li walked out from behind Qiao Zhen and affectionately put his arm around her shoulder. "Sweetie, I know I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?" He looked at the child's mother and said, "Hello, I am Xu Li. I have been busy with work lately and haven't had much time to spend with her. She is very angry."
Qiao Zhen's body stiffened for a moment, and she even felt a chill run down her spine.
