Ye Shangzhou's face was already as black as ink, and the teacup in his hand was shattered into pieces. The broken porcelain shards cut his hand, but even as blood flowed out, he seemed unaffected. His eyes were filled with a black mist.
If Qiao Zhen hadn't noticed something was off about Ye Shangzhou, she would have been in deep trouble long ago. "But," she changed the subject, "to each their own. No matter how good you are now, it has nothing to do with me. I only love you."
Ye Shangzhou's expression instantly brightened. He coughed lightly and asked, "What do you like about me?"
Qiao Zhen counted on her fingers again, one, two, three... With each finger she counted, Ye Shangzhou's gaze grew hotter. He straightened his back, waiting for Qiao Zhen to praise him.
Looking at Ye Shangzhou's expectant yet concealed gaze, Qiao Zhen felt like a bad person. Finally, she put her fingers together and said, "You have one great advantage, which is that your advantage is so well hidden."
Ye Shangzhou choked on his breath. What difference was there between this and him having no redeeming qualities?
"Then you still like me?"

This is a classic case of someone who benefits but then complains.
Qiao Zhen added, "But compared to you, I prefer a wise ruler."
Ye Shangzhou asked her, "If the wise ruler were not me, but Ye Huaijin, would you love Ye Huaijin?"
"No." Qiao Zhen leaned forward and cupped Ye Shangzhou's face in her hands. "Your Majesty, I wish you would be a wise ruler. So, would you please be a wise ruler?"
She was instilling in Ye Shangzhou the idea that "you should be a wise ruler," and over time, he gradually came to accept the correct understanding of "wise ruler."
