Chapter 47 I'll Protect You (14)

As it turns out, whether or not someone can appear before another is truly not up to Yuan Zhao.

Li Luo opened the door to go out, but saw Qiao Zhen outside looking conflicted. "If you want to go in, then go in."

Qiao Zhen saw the two red marks on Li Luo's neck as he turned his head to speak, and her face instantly turned red. "No, I won't go in." She lowered her head to hide her excitement and shyness.

But Li Luo was always perceptive, and he was somewhat puzzled. Could it be that Qiao Zhen liked him?!

He looked at Yuan Zhao inside and said, "Xiao Zhen just came over. Do you want to go and ask her why she came?"

"No need."

Qiao Zhen ran back to her room and took a while to calm down before realizing something was wrong. She had absolutely no reason to be shy. After all, Qiao Zhen had traveled the world and seen all sorts of bloody and ambiguous scenes. Once she understood, she went to find Yuan Zhao again. This time, she didn't hesitate and knocked on the door directly.

"Enter."

Qiao Zhen pushed open the door and entered. "It's me. May I ask why you want the Green Ghost Lamp?"

Yuan Zhao did not hide anything, "The Azure Lamp is not what I want, but if you want to ask, I can bring it out."

"?" Can one switch personalities at will?

Perhaps Qiao Zhen's doubts were too obvious, because Yuan Zhao closed his eyes and slumped onto the table. After a while, Yuan Zhao woke up again, rubbed his eyes, and looked somewhat dazed. "Ah! Miss, are you here to bring me meat to eat?"

"No, I brought you the Green Nether Lamp." Qiao Zhen rummaged through Yuan Zhao's room, found the Green Nether Lamp, and handed it to Yuan Zhao. "Yuan Zhao, can you tell me why you want the Green Nether Lamp?"

“I am not Yuan Zhao,” he retorted. “I am Yuan Zhao, the Zhao of summoning.”

"Alright then." Qiao Zhen changed her form of address and asked, "Shao, can you tell me why you want the Azure Lamp?"

"No!" This was Yuan Zhao's resolute answer.

“…Oh.” Qiao Zhen took the Qingming Lamp and left. “I’m not giving it to you.”

Yuan Zhao panicked a little. He quickly stood up but tripped over his own feet. Just as he was about to have a close encounter with the floor, Qiao Zhen reached out and picked him up.

"Stand still." She waved the blue ghost lamp in her hand. "If you don't tell me, I won't give it to you!"

Yuan Zhao frowned and struggled for a long time. Suddenly, as if he had made up his mind, he clenched his fists and punched his stomach.

Qiao Zhen said that it would be better if Yuan Zhao didn't have her arm across his abdomen, and she silently pulled her arm back.

“If I can be a little braver, Yuan Zhao will no longer be incomplete, and he won’t… won’t be called crazy because of me.” Yuan Zhao lowered his head sadly as he spoke. “I want the Azure Lamp to bewitch myself and become brave.”

Qiao Zhen patiently guided her, "Have you ever thought about what you would become if you tried to bewitch someone with the Azure Lamp but failed? On the bright side, you'd become smart, brave, and kind; on the dark side, you'd become a gambler, a womanizer, lazy, or even a ruthless killer. But you'd still be you, and Yuan Zhao wasn't whole either. You were the one he rejected. It's not your fault; it's his. He was cowardly, and he hated his own cowardice, which is why you came into being."

Qiao Zhen was still rambling on when she noticed a look of embarrassment and dismay in Yuan Zhao's eyes. She took a few steps back. This wasn't Yuan Zhao; it was Yuan Zhao. She had just been caught red-handed speaking ill of Yuan Zhao. "I just... don't take it to heart."

Yuan Zhao gave an ugly smile. "You're right about everything." He grabbed Qiao Zhen's sleeve as if she were a lifeline. "Go on."

Qiao Zhen succinctly stated, "The one who tied the knot must untie it." So, the knot in one's heart must be untied from there.

"Easier said than done!" Yuan Zhao scoffed.

Qiao Zhen shrugged indifferently, "Of course I don't know the pain if the needle isn't stuck in my body, but if you choose to ignore the pain because you're afraid to see the wound, then your wound will fester and turn into what it is now."

Yuan Zhao raised his hand to his chest, "Help me."

Seeing his condition, Qiao Zhen quickly supported him. "Are you alright?" She then noticed his slightly pale face. "Tell me, how can I help you?"

Yuan Zhao lowered his eyes and said, "I'll help you however you want."

Qiao Zhen was eager to try. She asked, "Okay." This should be considered the wish of the mission target, and after fulfilling his wish, she wouldn't have to worry about the conflict between the mission target's primary and secondary personalities.

When Yuan Zhao regained some color in his face, Qiao Zhen asked, "Are you going to cooperate with me?"

"Hmm." Yuan Zhao seemed to squeeze out the syllable with difficulty.

Qiao Zhen didn't expect him to be very cooperative. "Can you tell me about your...legs?"

Yuan Zhao bent down and rolled up his trouser leg. "As you can see."

This was the first time Qiao Zhen had seen Yuan Zhao's leg wounds so clearly. His leg had many scars and was uneven and pitted, making it easy to see that someone had ripped flesh out of him. "How could your leg..."

Yuan Zhao casually placed his gaze on a corner of the table. "As you can see, the flesh on my legs was brutally ripped out, all thanks to the Yuan family. When I was eight, I was subjected to inhumane treatment by my stepmother, who is now Madam Yuan. Sometimes I was timid, sometimes I was furious. I was locked in a secluded courtyard because I was said to have something unclean on my body. When I was fifteen, Master Yuan learned that my mother had a pure Yin constitution. After being provoked by Madam Yuan, he cut off my flesh. Later, he discovered that the flesh on my legs was actually pure Yang flesh, the Yang jade flesh recorded in ancient times. One bite could improve martial arts skills or even strengthen bones."

Qiao Zhen was speechless. Wasn't Yuan Zhao's character part of the Tang Monk series?
