Chapter Thirty-Five: I'll Protect You (2)

Old Man Yuan didn't hold it against Qiao Zhen for letting Yuan Lin go. He still knew a thing or two about Yuan Lin, and in the end, he sent someone to secretly protect his youngest son.

When Qiao Zhen got back, she took out a kite from Yuan Lin's storage cabinet. April was the perfect time to fly kites, so she took her dowry maid, Cai Die, to fly a kite.

It's not a butterfly picker, nor a colorful butterfly, it's just a plate of vegetables. Who knows why the name was chosen so casually?

Once the string was released and the kite took flight, Qiao Zhen realized that one thing was still missing—the east wind.

Qiao Zhen reeled in the kite string, only to find that it was not strong at all, because it broke halfway through and the kite flew away. Now she had to bite the bullet and go find the kite.

Today the wind is from the southeast, so the kite landed in the northwest courtyard. There's still a chance it landed in the target's courtyard, so she could only rely on luck.

"Let's go over there and find the kite."

"Yes, miss."

Qiao Zhen searched every courtyard she could think of, carrying the dishes, but couldn't find a single kite. Qiao Zhen felt her luck was so bad she should buy a lottery ticket.

Now only Yuan Zhao's courtyard remains.

Qiao Zhen leaned over the wall and said, "Cai Die, you stay outside and throw a pebble in as soon as anyone comes."

Cai Die was a little worried. "Miss, the master doesn't allow anyone to enter this courtyard. What will I do if the master finds out about you?"

"Anything is fine," Qiao Zhen said dismissively, then turned and went into the courtyard.

The yard wasn't completely deserted; at least there were still flowers and grass. But it looked like it had been ravaged; the flowers and grass on the ground were a mess, and there were scattered footprints.

Qiao Zhen pushed open the door to the only house in the courtyard. The silver chain of the safety detector on her wrist burned her skin, and Qiao Zhen immediately tensed up, looking warily at the things inside the house.

A gust of wind blew from behind, and Qiao Zhen quickly bent down to dodge the sneak attack. She saw a tall figure brush past her and fall to the ground.

Qiao Zhen quickly helped him up. She was there to fulfill his wish, not to abuse or enslave him. "Are you alright?"

Yuan Zhao raised his head, his sinister eyes fixed on Qiao Zhen, as if he were looking at prey that he was determined to have.

Qiao Zhen felt a chill run down her spine from the stare. She scratched the back of her head and then said with difficulty, "I came to find my kite. Have you seen my kite?"

Yuan Zhao tried to get up, but fell to the ground several times. However, he refused to give up and continued to crawl.

Qiao Zhen couldn't bear to watch any longer, so she grabbed Yuan Zhao's arm and lifted him up with a single effort.

Yuan Zhao also took the opportunity to wrap his arms around Qiao Zhen's neck, pressing his weight of over 100 pounds onto Qiao Zhen.

Qiao Zhen then realized that Yuan Zhao was incredibly light. For a tall, strong man to weigh only a little over 100 pounds, he must be skin and bones.

Yuan Zhao clung to Qiao Zhen as they walked out, and Qiao Zhen followed him. Yuan Zhao led Qiao Zhen to a tree, where a kite was caught in a branch.

Qiao Zhen helped Yuan Zhao sit under the tree, then lightly tapped her toes to retrieve the kite from the branch. "Thank you. You helped me with something, so how about I help you with something in return?"

Yuan Zhao rolled his eyes at Qiao Zhen, squeezing out a broken word, "Again...meat..."

"Meat? You want to eat meat?" Qiao Zhen asked.

Yuan Zhao's eyes lit up instantly as he looked at Qiao Zhen expectantly, then he crawled on the ground toward Qiao Zhen.

How could Qiao Zhen dare to watch her target crawl towards her? She quickly went over and helped him up, saying, "I'll bring the meat in later, don't rush."

Yuan Zhao's leg seemed to have some problems. Qiao Zhen bent down to lift up his trouser leg and saw that his leg was covered with scars, and the flesh was missing in patches.

"No...no meat...I don't want it anymore, no, there's no meat." Yuan Zhao frightenedly pulled at his trouser leg, trying to cover it, his eyes darting around, not daring to look at Qiao Zhen.

Qiao felt a pang of heartache; she felt her chance to atone for her sins had arrived. If she could protect Yuan Zhao well and fulfill his wish, she could definitely atone for the sins of the previous two mission worlds! For a moment, she was so excited that she almost shed tears.

Seeing Qiao Zhen staring blankly at his legs, Yuan Zhao assumed that the person in front of him also wanted to tear his flesh, so he roughly pushed Qiao Zhen away and hurriedly scrambled into the house.

Qiao Zhen plopped down on the ground. When she came to her senses, she saw Yuan Zhao crawling on the ground. So she put down the kite she was holding, got up, walked over to Yuan Zhao, bent down and gave him a princess hug, holding him steadily in her arms. "Tell me where you want to go, and I'll carry you there."

Qiao Zhen, who felt very gentle, gave herself a big thumbs up in her heart.

Yuan Zhao clung to Qiao Zhen's neck, afraid he would fall, but he was also afraid that Qiao Zhen was like those others, pretending to be kind to him but actually only wanting his flesh. He had done nothing wrong, but possessing a treasure was a crime, and the flesh of Yang Yu was right there on his leg.

Qiao Zhen had no idea whether Yuan Zhao had any sheep or ox jade flesh on him; in any case, it was human flesh. "Don't be afraid, I won't hurt you."

Yuan Zhao's pupils contracted rapidly, and he struggled to escape from Qiao Zhen's embrace. The words she had just spoken were the same words those who wanted to eat him had said.

Completely unaware of what she had done wrong, Qiao Zhen stared blankly at the thrashing Yuan Zhao, who then slapped her hard across the face, leaving a burning pain. But even if Yuan Zhao could torment her a thousand times over, she would still treat him like her first love.

So she held Yuan Zhao tightly and put him back on the big bed in the room. The bed was dirty and messy, and it was really unsightly.

Yuan Zhao's clothes were also dirty and messy. In some slightly cleaner places, you could see that his clothes were moon white, but now they had been given a new color by time: gray.

Yuan Zhao looked at the roof in despair. Since he couldn't escape anyway, he might as well eat. Once his flesh was gone, he would have no more meat and be free.

Qiao Zhen had no other thoughts. She put Yuan Zhao on the bed and then went out.

Yuan Zhao breathed a sigh of relief, sobbed softly, and then buried her face in the blankets.

About half an hour later, Qiao Zhen brought in braised pork, broth, and a bowl of rice. She struggled to find a place on the table to put the food, then picked up Yuan Zhao, whose eyes were red, and said, "Eat the meat."

Upon seeing the meat, Yuan Zhao lunged forward, completely forgetting that he was still in Qiao Zhen's arms, and nearly fell to the ground.

Qiao Zhen managed to hold him steady, then placed him on the stool covered in a layer of dust. "Eat."

Yuan Zhao looked at Qiao Zhen, then picked up the meat and wolfed it down.

The food was freshly cooked and still steaming hot. Qiao Zhen quickly stopped Yuan Zhao's actions, looking at his red hands, and then pinched his mouth to force him to open it, "Is your mouth numb? Can't you feel any pain?"

Yuan Zhao used his greasy hands to pry Qiao Zhen's hands away, "Eat...eat, change."

Qiao Zhen ignored him and took the food tray out. It was too dirty in here. She was going to steal Yuan Zhao away and keep her as a mistress.
