"I often hear the servants say that life in the countryside is free and easy, and I would like to experience it myself, but I am bound by the rules and cannot leave the manor. I really yearn for life in the countryside. Could you two sisters tell me about the interesting things that happen there?" Qin Rong's voice was full of anticipation.
“There’s nothing particularly interesting about it. If Rong’er wants to go, why don’t we ask Father in a few days and go together to experience it?” Xiang Xia said, pulling Xiang Wan along before she could even speak.
Xiang Wan was a little confused. Rural life was indeed quite interesting. Although she hadn't experienced it here yet, she had grown up in the countryside during her childhood in modern times. It shouldn't be a problem to talk about catching frogs and fighting crickets. Right now, she wanted to get closer to Qin Rong, but unexpectedly, Xiang Xia stopped her.
"Sister Xia'er is right, but my father might not agree to the three of us going out of the manor to play in the countryside. If we go to a teahouse nearby, it won't be difficult." Qin Rong seemed hesitant, but then said, "I'm sure neither of you sisters has ever been to a teahouse before. There are storytellers there, and we often hear interesting stories. It would be nice if we went to listen to a story another day."
"Oh dear, I forgot that you two sisters have only just arrived at the manor and don't know what good food or fun things there are around. If you need to go out, just call me and I'll ask Xiaolan to lead the way for you."
As Qin Rong spoke, she pulled over the maid beside her and introduced her to Xiang Xia and Xiang Wan: "This is Xiao Lan, my personal maid."
Seeing that Qin Rong didn't seem to have any intention of telling the two of them about the situation in the mansion, Xiang Wan and Xiang Xia chatted with Qin Rong about some amusing things between young lovers before they went their separate ways.
Xiang Xia's courtyard was not far from Xiang Wan's, so the two walked back together. When they were near Xiang Wan's residence, they went into Xiang Wan's room together.
After sending the servants away, Xiang Xia told Xiang Wan about what had happened in the pavilion, sounding somewhat disappointed.
"Xiang Wan, although we came here with Mother, we didn't come here to be maids. Being so attentive to Qin Rong only makes us a laughing stock in front of outsiders. What are you trying to do?"
Xiang Wan had expected Xiang Xia to have a private conversation with her, but instead, Xiang Xia expressed dissatisfaction with Xiang Wan's close relationship with Qin Rong. She wanted to deal with Qin Rong, but only after understanding Qin Rong and knowing she would target the mother and her two daughters. Using underhanded tactics from the start wouldn't be in her nature. However, she couldn't directly tell Xiang Xia now. After all, they had just arrived at the Qin residence and nothing unpleasant had happened. If she revealed her reasons for targeting Qin Rong now, not only would Xiang Xia not believe her, but it would also worsen their relationship, contradicting her original purpose for coming.
After thinking for a moment, she followed the original owner's personality and said, "Aren't we family? Why should sisters care about these things?"
"You, with such a carefree personality, you'll suffer for it later." Xiang Xia tapped Xiang Wan's forehead and said, "You treat her like family, but does she treat you like family? Don't be fooled by her calling us 'sister' on the surface. Just because she won't tell us the details of what's going on in the mansion, we shouldn't reveal our own secrets either."
"What can we do? Isn't it just that she wants to hear some interesting stories from the countryside? There's nothing wrong with telling her, is there?"
"You big idiot, they're making a fool of us, and you actually listen to them!"
"Where would they make a fool of us? Impossible!"
"Why not? She's a young lady of high birth. After her father left, she was in charge of the entire mansion. She could hear whatever she wanted, but she insisted on having us tell stories. She treats us like servants or storytellers. What's so difficult about leaving the mansion? Yet we have to go through her troubles to find her personal maid. And you won't listen to me. Keep your mouth shut in the future, lest you fall into someone's trap someday."
"It can't be that serious, can it?" Xiang Wan asked, a little worried.
"You'll get what's coming to you sooner or later. In the future, don't be so impulsive when things happen. It's better to say less than anything else."
After Xiang Xia left, Xiang Wan sat alone at the table, thinking about what had happened in the pavilion, a chill running down her spine. She wasn't usually this talkative, but upon seeing Qin Rong, she couldn't help but want to be close to her, speaking without thinking. This behavior was very similar to the original owner's personality. The good thing was that even Xiang Xia wouldn't recognize her as the original owner anymore. The bad thing was that with this kind of personality, interacting with Qin Rong would inevitably lead her down the same path as the original owner; what future could she possibly have?
Just as she was racking her brains, a sudden inspiration struck her: "We still have 007, don't we?" With that thought, Xiang Wan made up her mind, washed up, and went to bed.
