Xiang Wan's wound was gradually healing, and she could feel a tingling, itchy sensation in her arm from time to time. Feng Yulian changed her dressing several times; the scabbed wound looked quite ugly, but thankfully it wasn't on her face, otherwise she herself wouldn't have been able to accept it.
Although she occasionally argued with Xiang Wan while carrying Feng Yulian, unable to bear seeing one get hurt or another die, she did indeed help her a lot. Xiang Wan instilled various ideas in her along the way, almost as if she wanted to assimilate her.
Occasionally, Xiang Wan would think of the system and ask it for directions. This arrogant system, however, claimed that this world was somewhat dangerous and it couldn't come out often. Putting her in such a dangerous world—what was it thinking? If something happened to Xiang Wan, wouldn't the system be in trouble too?
"This is different. You are of use to them, so even if they capture you, you won't die anytime soon. This system is different. If a powerful person manages to get me out, then I'm completely finished. It's better not to take the risk. Host, just focus on completing the mission with your own abilities. That way, the rewards will be greater."
Xiang Wan thought it made some sense, but after thinking about it for a while, she still felt that something was not quite right.
"You cheated me out of my reward?"
"You think this system is free labor? Giving you directions doesn't cost you any energy? Taking some rewards is only fair."
"Alright, you can leave now."
Xiang Wan instantly understood. There's no such thing as a free lunch. It's understandable that the system would ask for some compensation for doing things beyond its scope, but taking it without explanation is a different matter. Most importantly, she had no idea how much or how little of each reward she received. But if she were too clear about the division between herself and the system, it would seem a bit unreasonable. She understood the principle that one shouldn't be deaf and dumb. Ultimately, she had to complete the task. She would do her best to let the system gain some extra benefits, and as long as it wasn't too excessive, she wouldn't pursue it. She believed that she would become very powerful in the future, and if the system went too far then, she would make it eat whatever it wanted, and then return it with interest. Right now, the most important thing was to improve her own strength. No rush, no rush!
The dormant system inexplicably shivered and gradually fell silent again.
After walking through the dense forest for several days, Xiang Wan found a perfect place to rest. It was a large tree growing in a mountain hollow, with very dense foliage, a thick trunk, and branches spreading out horizontally. From a distance, it was impossible to see what was inside. And up close, unless you climbed the tree, you wouldn't know there were people up there. Xiang Wan then had Feng Yulian weave a hammock on it using some vines and branches, enough for the two of them to lie down and rest.
During the day, they each went out to find food. In the evening, they hunted, and Feng Yulian picked fruit. At night, they rested in the trees to recuperate.
Despite years of lecturing Feng Yulian, she still refused to eat meat. Her only improvement was that she stopped stopping Xiang Wan from hunting and pretended not to see her roasting and eating meat. This was good. In the original owner's memories, it was said that some people in this world would suffer adverse consequences if they ate meat, though she didn't know if it was true. Considering that Feng Yulian's personality was currently to her liking, she didn't plan to test her with this for the time being.
Led by their leader Chang San, the armed men would frequently go down the mountain to buy supplies, bringing back children or women. During the days they were being monitored, Xiang Wan occasionally saw people entering the mountains, but no one came back after that. The women and children were well-fed and cared for every day, showing no signs of mistreatment; they were simply forbidden from leaving the village. Even so, Feng Yulian still wanted to rescue them.
“There are only two of us right now, how can we save them? And look at those people, do they even realize they're being captured? It's understandable that kids get bribed with a little treat. But look at those women, they're even trying to seduce men. If you show up in front of them now and say you're going to save them, you might be seen as a vixen trying to steal their men, and they might tie you up and hand you over, believe me?”
"I went to rescue people, so why are they treating me like this?"
"If you don't believe me, you can try. But if you get caught, they will definitely torture you to extract a confession. Losing your innocence is a small matter; you'll suffer a fate worse than death. If you don't implicate me, you might still be saved. But if you let it slip, you'll be the first one silenced."
Feng Yulian stared at Xiang Wan in disbelief. Seeing that she wasn't joking, she gradually fell silent, closed her eyes, and murmured to herself, "Heaven has the virtue of cherishing life, and all things have their way of survival. All things are subject to fate, and the arising and ceasing of fate are all in a single thought. One thought can make one a demon, and one thought can make one a Buddha. One cannot see either demon or Buddha."
Xiang Wan was puzzled when she suddenly opened her eyes and said, "Captain Zhao, you are the only one in my eyes."
Damn, she suddenly started saying sweet nothings; it gave me goosebumps. Xiang Wan silently moved a little further away from her.
"So, I'll listen to you. I think you know more about these things than I do."
Whew, that scared me to death! I almost thought I'd run into a lesbian. With Feng Yulian's personality, it's no wonder Shi Di liked her, and even the two who sacrificed themselves in the team were fond of her. Her later turn to the dark side must have been Shi Di's doing. If she hadn't changed and remained loyal to him, then whether or not he should repay the original owner in the end is a real headache.
Forget it, I'll just take it one step at a time. The original owner's wish was to find out the truth. When the truth comes out, we'll see what to do then.
The two took turns keeping watch, and sometimes when they saw the other two eating heartily, they would steal a piece of food, enough for one or two people, without arousing the other's suspicion.
