Wu Xiaole's mother, Xu Jinlian, was in worsening condition and refused to stay in the hospital any longer, wanting to return to her hometown. Wu Xiaole was frantic and, thinking that she might listen to Xiang Wan, sent her a message.
For the past year or so, whenever Wu Xiaole finished his training, he would chat with Xiang Wan and tell her about interesting things that happened in the military camp. Because Xiang Wan had experienced a lot of things in the world and had also systematically studied combat skills, she could talk to him and they gradually became friends. However, they hadn't seen each other much since they last parted ways.
Just as Xiang Wan was figuring out how to get out of this mess, Wu Xiaole's message arrived, saving her from having to make up another excuse.
Before their departure, Qiu Rui came to see them off. He didn't mention a word of what he had said to Xiang Wan on the phone the night before in front of Xiang's parents. When Xiang Wan was on the train, his ambiguous gaze made her feel uncomfortable, so she quickly waved goodbye and entered the carriage.
Xu Jinlian has lung cancer. A year ago, when she went to the hospital, the doctor removed the lesion, but it recurred and caused edema. Wu Xiaole is in the military and can't often take leave to visit her, so he hired a caregiver. However, Xu Jinlian thought it was too expensive and refused to be hospitalized, insisting on returning to her hometown.
When Xiang Wan arrived, Xu Jinlian was sitting on a chair by the window, sulking.
"Xiang Wan, I'm entrusting my mother to you."
Wu Xiaole, unshaven and looking exhausted and anxious, managed a weak smile when he saw Xiang Wan approaching. This tall, strong man showed a rare vulnerability. This tough guy, who couldn't be broken by blood and sweat, was helpless in the face of family.
"You take a rest, I'll do my best!"
Xiang Wan placed the fruit on the bedside table, pulled up a chair and sat down next to Xu Jinlian, then broke off a banana and handed it to her.
"Auntie, are you alright?"
While she was speaking, Wu Xiaole quietly left the ward and closed the door.
Xu Jinlian sighed, turned around and saw Xiang Wan. Her eyes lit up. Forgetting about the banana, she grabbed Xiang Wan's arm and said happily, "Xiang Wan, are you dating my son? He won't say, but I know what he's thinking."
Xiang Wan gently patted Xu Jinlian's hand and comforted her, "Auntie, the most important thing for you right now is to take good care of your health. Otherwise, how will you be able to see him get married and have children?"
“Yes, yes, yes,” Xu Jinlian nodded excitedly and said anxiously, “Then get it done as soon as possible. I’ll be happy, and I’ll be able to die happy with Xiao Le’s father.”
"Auntie, have you seen your son's condition? He's so anxious because you're not cooperating with his treatment. How can you bear to leave him all alone?"
Xu Jinlian's eyes dimmed, and she sighed, "Alas, it's not that I don't want to live, but this illness of mine is a bottomless pit. Why waste money like that? Before I die, I'll only cause trouble for my son. If I spend all the money, how will he live?"
Xiang Wan helped Xu Jinlian to her feet and led her to the window, saying, "Auntie, you're being stubborn. Money is inanimate, but people are alive. You can't risk your life for money; it's not worth it. Besides, the government will reimburse your medical expenses; it won't cost much. If you keep neglecting your health and don't get treatment, will your son be at ease? I'm afraid that if you leave, your son will collapse. He's your hope, and aren't you his pillar of support? For your own sake, but for your son's sake, please trust science, be optimistic and actively seek treatment; you will definitely recover."
“Good boy, I understand what you’re saying, but I just don’t want to see Xiao Le dragged down by me, he…”
"No, soldiers have very generous benefits. Your treatment won't cost you a penny, nor will it be a burden on your son. You can ask the doctor later if you don't believe me."
"real?"
Xiang Wan nodded and said to her, "Auntie, look, the old lady downstairs who's over eighty and sunbathing was diagnosed with cancer a few years ago. She cooperated with the treatment actively, and now she's just fine. And look over there, those people exercising, whose conditions aren't much more serious than yours? But look at them now, who among them is as pessimistic as you?"
Xu Jinlian stared at the people downstairs, gradually lost in thought. Xiang Wan knew that she had taken it to heart, so she pressed on: "If you don't believe in science, there's my master, a very skilled traditional Chinese medicine doctor. He once said that no matter how serious the patient's condition, he can save them, but if the patient is determined to die, even a god can't save them."
Xu Jinlian came to her senses, the dejected look on her face gradually faded, and her eyes began to shine again: "Good child, I'm so glad to have met you. Don't worry, from now on, for my son's sake, I will live well."
After Xiang Wan left, Xu Jinlian tapped Wu Xiaole's forehead and scolded, "Silly son, such a good girl, why don't you know how to pursue her? You'll regret it later!"
Wu Xiaole didn't answer, running around looking for nurses, paying fees, and asking about his condition. Occasionally, he would think about him and Xiang Wan, but in the end, he would just shake his head and sigh: In his condition, no girl would be willing to marry him, Xiang Wan... never mind.
Back home, Xiang Wan met the gaming pro in the game as promised, but the atmosphere between them was no longer that of simple practice partners. The pro would occasionally talk about his own life, and in his spare time, he would ask her to run dungeons and help her level up. It seemed that ever since she participated in the qualifiers, the pro had suddenly become more down-to-earth. Or rather, to be precise, his attitude towards her had changed since the qualifiers. Xiang Wan didn't understand why, but undeniably, she was somewhat pleased with this change!
The month-long training period was almost over. It was the last training session, and Xiang Wan was a little distracted. She died not long after the game started.
"Out of sorts?"
