Chapter 409 The Mystery (Seventeen)

The wind blew past her ears, ruffling her long hair, and carrying with it a deep sense of powerlessness in Xiang Wan's heart.

She was still falling, and Xiang Wan could even feel the overwhelming pressure from all around her, making it hard for her to breathe.

What is your deepest fear?

What is it?

"What?"

A distant and somewhat indistinct sound came from all directions, and Xiang Wan's heart pounded, while the wind blowing against her skin seemed to lessen.

Are you scared?

Are you scared?

"Is that right?"

The sound grew closer, the feeling of being airborne gradually diminished, the wind had disappeared, and her back touched something soft. Then, she seemed to hear someone calling her name.

"Wan'er, wake up!"

"Child, wake up!"

"You've suffered so much, your parents' hearts are breaking for you!"

The noise kept drilling into her ears. Xiang Wan suddenly opened her eyes and saw an elderly couple with white hair looking at her with red eyes.

"She's awake! She's finally awake, doctor!"

"Wan'er, how could you be so silly~~"

Those two familiar faces were none other than Xiang's father and mother. Seeing that she was awake, Xiang's father immediately went to call the doctor, while Xiang's mother kept wiping away her tears.

It was the same familiar hospital, with the same familiar doctors and nurses. They came in, examined Xiang Wan, and told the elderly couple that their daughter was alright.

Xiang Wan hadn't recovered from the endless fall when she just stared blankly at them negotiating and listening to their explanations.

Has she gone back?

Why do my parents look so old?

What about the system?

"Xiao Qi? Where am I?"

Xiang Wan couldn't recall that familiar voice. She called out several more times, but there was still no response.

After a large group of people left, Xiang's father went out to get some hot water, while Xiang's mother sat by the bedside, touching her forehead with her hand. Seeing that she had no reaction, she couldn't help but shed tears again.

"You silly child, why can't you let go? He Yang is already married. Just let him go, and let yourself go too. I'm begging you, please?"

Xiang's mother felt both heartache and disappointment. Seeing that Xiang Wan still didn't react, she was overcome with grief and wanted to burst into tears, but afraid that her daughter would see, she quickly got up and went into the bathroom.

A suppressed sob, accompanied by the sound of running water, came through the crack in the door. Xiang Wan's heart stirred, and her eyes quietly reddened.

She remembered that after she and He Yang signed their divorce agreement, she accidentally fell off the balcony, hit her head, and was found by her parents and taken to the hospital.

Her parents thought she was suicidal and stayed by her side at the hospital every step of the way. In those few days, more than half of their hair turned white, all because of her!

For some reason, the memory of her previous life, before she encountered the system, was clearly imprinted in her mind.

She was no longer young, and her parents were old. Having tormented herself for most of her life, she had let go of He Yang and herself; her life should have been free of further turmoil. So why was she here?

About fifteen minutes later, Xiang's mother came out of the bathroom. She didn't mention anything about what had happened before, but just asked Xiang Wan what she wanted to eat so she could go buy it.

Looking at her white-haired mother, Xiang Wan didn't know what to say for a moment, and tears streamed down her face before she could utter a word.

Xiang's mother gently wiped away the tears from her temples, sighed, and said softly, "Alright, it's good that you're awake. Wait here for a while, I'll go buy you some porridge."

"Um!"

As the ward door was gently closed, Xiang Wan stared blankly at the ceiling.

Xiang Wan tried calling out to the system in her mind again, but received no response. She then gave up on trying to find the system. It seemed that this time, she would have to rely on herself.

But why did she return to the life before the system chose her?

Is there something she can't let go of in her heart?

Recalling the last few sounds in the bottomless pit, Xiang Wan had a vague guess in her heart.

The ward door opened again, and He Yang, whom we hadn't seen for a long time, walked in.

He was also a middle-aged man over fifty, and the years had left deep marks on his forehead and temples.

When Xiang Wan saw him again, she felt neither sadness nor joy, as if he were just a complete stranger.

"How are you?"

He Yang's brows furrowed, the deep lines between them as always.

In her memory, He Yang had always been like this, never offering even a smile when facing her.

Xiang Wan nodded to him. "You're here? Have a seat."

He Yang was somewhat surprised, yet also somewhat relieved. In his heart, he had only seen Xiang Wan like this before their marriage. Seeing her again now felt like a lifetime ago.

They remained silent. Xiang Wan didn't want to speak because she truly had nothing to say. He Yang didn't speak either, because he didn't know where to begin.

Silence spread through the ward. Xiang Wan, with her sharp eyes, caught a glimpse of her parents' faces outside the ward. Knowing they were worried, she decided not to waste any more time.

“He Yang, you don’t need to come anymore.” Xiang Wan cleared her throat and said seriously, “Since we’ve decided to separate, let’s separate completely. You’ve taken care of my parents for most of your life. Compared to what I’ve done for you, I owe you far more than you owe me. From now on, live your life well and don’t let your wife live in fear like I have.”

This is what Xiang Wan has always wanted to say. Aside from feelings, He Yang owes her nothing. She has already fulfilled all her responsibilities and obligations; what reason does she have not to let him be happy?

"He Yang, thank you!"

Xiang Wan felt completely relieved and sincerely thanked He Yang.
